The HVAC/R industry has progressively become more technical. With new technology, industries are requiring their employee's skills to be updated to match the current changes. HVAC/R certification and competency tests are directed toward students and technicians at all skill levels. The National Certification Competency Exams are being offered by many organizations, including Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), North American Technician Excellence (NATE), Refrigeration Service Engineer Society (RSES), and the ESCO Institute (HVAC Excellence). Guide to the HVACIR Certification and Competency Tests, 2E is designed to help students and technicians pass competency and certification exams. The book is divided into three parts: a Study Guide, Questions, and Answers. This guide covers: System Components and Tools, Electrical Theory and Application, Airflow Components and Duct Fabrication, Indoor Air Quality and Safety, and Commercial Refrigeration and Hydronic Heating. The Questions and Answers sections cover one additional topic: Service and Troubleshooting. The student/technician will benefit most by reading the Study Guide first. Then, the student should turn to the Questions for the related statement. For example, the first statement in question 1 of "System Components and Tools" under Hand Tools reads, "A torx driver has a star shaped head and is used on torx type screws." The student would then turn to the same section in the Questions and try to answer question 1. In Section 4 of the Study Guide, an EPA Certification Study Guide has been provided to assist the student in successfully passing Type I, II, III, and Universal Recover/ Recycle Certification Examinations. This new edition includes two new sections, "Commercial Refrigeration" and "Hydronic Heating:" As a result, troubleshooting questions have been added, bringing the total to 2,200. These sections have been added to better prepare technicians in passing Certification and Competency Exams. It is the hope of the authors that all of the information provided in this book will assist the student in successfully passing certification exams offered by any HVAC/R national organization.

When a man greets Adam Lapid on the streets of Tel Aviv, Lapid recognizes him as a fellow prisoner at Auschwitz named Yosef Kaplon. A few days later, Kaplon slits his wrists and a friend asks Lapid to figure out why. His investigation opens a window on Holocaust survivors, collaboration, and vengeance. Before the 1961 Adolf Eichmann trial, many Israelis poorly understood the experience of European Jews who had survived the Shoah, and the survivors rarely spoke about their experiences. Some Israelis—sabras, “natives”—felt that European Jews had been too weak and compliant in the face of oppression. The “new Zionist man” would show the world that Jews couldn’t be pushed around. Survivors felt differently, of course. There had been little they could do, and there were few Gentiles willing to help. After the war, radicals began targeting Nazi officers and camp guards for assassination because the Allies were doing relatively little to bring the perpetrators of genocide to justice. This the background leading up to the Mossad’s capture of Eichmann in 1960. The radicals also took a dim view of European Jews whom they felt had collaborated with the enemy: the Judenrat (ghetto police), Kapos (concentration camp supervisors), even musicians forced to play in camp orchestras.Dunsky uses this mix of survival, collaboration, and vengeance as the background to The Auschwitz Violinist, which is the third Adam Lapid novel. On the whole, he does a good job. I will note, however, that when Dunsky introduced a particular character in particular, I had a premonition he would turn out to be the bad guy. And I was right. I can’t say whether this was because I have read too many mysteries or because Dunsky telegraphed the ending unwittingly. Probably the former. So, three stars for The Auschwitz Violinist from me, but it’s still a page-turner, and I look forward to the fourth novel in the series.

If I loved all the Adam Lapid books, this one triggered a lot of thoughts in me.It made it clear that the Jewish world is a kaleidoscope. I knew this of course, but to know and to realise are different things. this book gives us a magistral lesson in history and human reactions to horror and to the victims of horror. I met many different Jews in my 73 years on this earth, in France, Canada, Australia, the US and of course Israel, some even in india. I was most fascinated by those I met as a kid, who had gone through the October revolution in Russia, escaped to Paris, had to flee to Spain or Cuba or the US or ended up in camps during WWII, some who survived came back to Paris. Reading this book makes me understand much better the way these old guys reacted to my naive questions about these numbers ontheir arm. And also why some of my friends who were relatives of those with numbers on their arm clammed up when I enquired. There is more to it but this is not the place to elaborate. the point is that we deal with a book that goes well beyond being a detective story, it has as I pointed out historical value, as well as psychological insight. With all due respect for Agatha Christie, Simenon and others, this book has another dimension. Of course one can ignore it and appreciate only the "who dunnit aspect" which is sdufficiwent by itself to make this bvook a great detective story.

This is the third novel in the Adam Lapid series. Intrigue, revenge, justice, remorse, guilt -- all wrapped up in a very readable, believable story that manages to capture the horrors and cruelty suffered in camps like Auschwitz and yet displays the indomitable human spirit. Made me cry and cringe, but I couldn't put the book down!

I discovered this author quite by accident in one of the newsletters I receive. Serendipity! I was immediately hooked. I’ve since read two of his other books and will read however more there are. Set in the early years of Israel this is noir at its best. The author hooks the reader right in and does not let go until the very end. I highly recommend this book and this author.

How do survivors cope with their survival? This book has fascinating characters (most of whom are well enough developed to have their own book). It shows how they tried to pick up the pieces of their lives and move on. It also shows the darker side of the scars that they carry. Read it!

I love anything from WWII and this filled the bill. It was a fast moving story. One that didn't get tangled up in a lot of discreption or .lengthy detail but a good story line and mystery to keep you interested. I enjoyed it.

The auschwitz Violinist brings excellent insight into life in Israel sollowing statehood and identifies ongoing serious issues in a thrilling mystery. The vestiges of WWII are sell stated and prexcellent motivation to thee continuing emphasis on the holocost. the book brings in a number of lesser known details and is very well done

#41,785 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

First, I have most of Dr. Fuhrman's books, including his book on fasting, Eat to Live, End of Diabetes and The End of Heart Disease (EOHD), and, have several of his videos. I've also read books by other doctors who write in this genre including McDougall, Kahn, Esselstyn, etc.Issues: page 12 of EOHD asks any doctors, researchers, etc., who find conflicting information or evidence to contact Dr. Fuhrman. Fast forward and Dr. Fuhrman notes, on page 188, there has not been any diet with 'animal proteins' that has been proven to reverse heart (vascular) disease (CVD). Not true...Dr. K Lance Gould has multiple publications objectively demonstrating through PET scans the reversal of CVD through a diet which includes animal proteins. Gould worked with Dean Ornish on the very early cutting edge reversal of CVD through non-invasive measures, but, as he writes in his book felt Ornish's approach was too high in starchy carbs and felt vegetables, lean proteins and fruits (in that order) should be the lead foods for heart patients. In fact, one of Gould's early patients--Al Weatherhead--passed away only a few years ago after being given a death sentence in the 80s.Dr. William Davis has published, in PubMed, research showing his diet, which includes animal protein, the reversal of CVD _AND_ coronary calcification. In his book, Track Your Plaque, and, website Curereality, Davis also cites patients who have reversed their calcium score from the thousands to the hundreds. (As a side note, a cardiologist in Dallas, TX, in the 1990s, was sending his patients to a nutritionist, Cliff Sheats. The MD noted his patients had seen 100% reversal of CVD via Sheats' diet.)Third, Dr. Fuhrman advises against (or limiting) potatoes, however, they're included in Dr. Esselstyn's diet--which is advocated by Dr. Joel Kahn (a cardiologist and reviewer of Dr. Fuhrman's book. So, which is it...potato? Or no. And, I'm not aware of rampant levels of heart disease in societies where potatoes are a prime part of their diet? Even in the section on Dr. Esselstyn's diet, he doesn't fully address this.Fourth, Dr. Fuhrman works or appears with Dr. Mark Hyman who wrote Eat Fat, Get Thin. Hyman advocates moderate/low amounts of animal proteins, Saturated Fats, etc. Again, confusing since their approaches are opposite. Will continue to read the book, and, try to reach Dr. Fuhrman to provide the references regarding Gould and Davis.

I've been following Dr. Fuhrman since 2011, I have read all of his books, they are all great. This way of eating is the only way to protect yourself not only from Heat Disease but Cancer and Diabetes as well. If I can do it anyone can, you need to take control of your life, Dr. Fuhrman can lead you to water but you have to drink, You need to commit yourself to this way of eating for life. There are millions of recipes on the web as well as Dr. Fuhrman's web site. Lots and Lots of taste Plant based foods. Always make the Salad the main Dish, as Dr. Fuhrman says., all in all this is a Great Book, do as it says and beat the diseases of the Standard American Diet. I don't miss Meat at all, as I have cut it entirely out of my diet.

What I like about Fuhrman is he backs up his conclusions with scientific research and is not afraid to take on BIG FOOD. I use his dietary guidelines extensively in a weight loss and preventive health clinic and we are getting great results emphasizing a primarily plant-based diet. And at 69I am seeing some great personal health benefits as well. My weak criticisms are that much of his material is redundant between his books so youwill read much the same in End of Diabetes and Eat to Live, etc...As a former university team physician and Olympic Training Center volunteerphysician as well as highly skilled athlete, I also find Fuhrman, Hyman, Davis, McDougall, Campbell et al quite weak on exercise prescription. Mypatients have also commented that none of them look all that athletic; however, they look a lot better than the fat physicians I have observed atmeetings of the former American Society of Bariatric Physicians now the Obesity Medical Association. I think I have also unfortunately discoveredwhy these plant based proponents all write books, running a weight loss clinic is not very profitable. It is more a labor of love for me--unlike most weight loss physicians, we accept insurance (reimbursement sucks) and many insurers refuse to pay for 'obesity' as a principal diagnosis. So whenever a patient is unable to afford care or lives too far away or is a diabetic that has just learned from me they have peripheral neuropathy (Iperform up to 300 EMG's and nerve tests per month) I routinely recommend they purchase one or more of Dr. Fuhrman's books. I concur withhim that anyone following his dietary recommendations will become healthier and in fact may save their own life. Our clinic is duplicating his results--we are getting people off blood pressure pills, statins, and even insulin!

I love Fuhrman's latest book. I bought it because my child has a heart defect that predisposes him to coranary artery disease later in life and I want to do what I can to help him prevent that. I have been eating this way for 3 years. In that time, I have not been sick once. I am in my forties and I feel better than I did in my twenties. I lost 30 pounds the first three months and kept it off. I don't count calories and I maintain a bmi of 19. My blood pressure and cholesterol are excellent. It works!

If you devoured a lot of pop culture over the last decade, you might wonder what Chuck Klosterman's latest volume, Chuck Klosterman X: A Highly Specific, Defiantly Incomplete History of the Early 21st Century, has to offer. My answer to this: perspective. In this collection of 38 essays culled from his work in publications like Esquire and Grantland, Klosterman analyzes various facets of pop culture ranging from zombies to Miley Cyrus, from Mountain Dew to Lou Reed. He explains, "Consumed in aggregate, this omnibus equates to a short book about music, a short book about sports, and a short book about everything else that could possibly exist." Disconnected as these subjects may seem, they are all filtered through Klosterman's unique voice. He's the anti-critic. He's the guy who goes to both Creed and Nickelback concerts on the same night just to find out why the bands are hated so much. One of the best essays, titled "Three Man Weave," traces the bizarre story of a "...pair of low-profile junior college basketball teams [who] played a forgotten game on a neutral floor in southeast North Dakota" in 1988. Due to a series of random events, the unfavored team won with only 3 players on the floor. The topic sounds boring--so boring, in fact, that many of the subjects interviewed had forgotten details of the event. But then the same thing happens to the exact same teams in 2016! That is one of Klosterman's gifts as a writer: turning a boring tale into something eyebrow-raising. Perspective. His other gift: writing 10,000-word essays about KISS and making you like it.Aside from a few articles on nostalgia and Charlie Brown, the majority of the book is filled with Klosterman's musings on sports or music. His interviews with Jimmy Page, Noel Gallagher, Stephen Malkmus, and Eddie Van Halen are just as excellent as his pieces on Tim Tebow, Kobe Bryant, and Tom Brady. He takes a turn into "grumpy aging cultural writer" territory in his reflection on Harry Potter as a cultural phenomenon:"...I find it astounding that the unifying cultural currency for modern teenagers is five-hundred-page literary works about a wizard...Because I don't understand Harry Potter, am I doomed to misunderstand everything else?"My response to Klosterman: Probably not. Your world view has been shaped by Walter White, Jonathan Franzen, and a love of hair metal, and that is no more or less significant than books about wizards. But if I ever meet you in a bar, I'll get you drunk and we'll figure out your house (I'm guessing Hufflepuff). What does one do after reading the entirety of a Chuck Klosterman book in one sitting? (Ok, two sittings). Somehow, starting a Noel Gallagher cover band seems equally as appealing as joining a fantasy sports league. I can't help but think this is what Klosterman wants: for the voyeurs of pop culture to realize what they are missing by observing but not truly living it; and for those swimming in the thick of it to see pop culture as the voyeurs do.I recommend Chuck Klosterman X: A Highly Specific, Defiantly Incomplete History of the Early 21st Century to fans of music, sports, and everything else that could possibly exist. Most importantly, if you did not know that in 2006, Danger Mouse released an illegal Beatles/Jay-Z mashup called The Grey Album (and it's excellent), then you should read this book strictly for educational purposes.

Brilliant writer. I have all his books and only wish I could come close to his level of wordsmithing. This collection is particularly fun because it includes his favorite pop culture reviews and impressions.

Engaging collection of previously published essays from the past ten years, most focused on sports and music. I’ve been following Klosterman for a while now and I appreciate the way he’s retained his wit and honesty. He writes about what interests him and he has a gift for making it interesting to you (I never would have guessed I would enjoy an essay about a long-ago minor college basketball game). He has something fresh to bring to even the most over-exposed subjects (like Taylor Swift).

I found Mr. Klosterman via his last two books, I Wear the Black Hat and But What if We’re Wrong?, two books I enjoyed immensely. I certainly wasn’t going to pass up his latest outing, X, though I had concerns. In particular, I don’t have a huge interest in current music or sports. I was afraid I might be left out of his target audience here. Turns out, I needn’t have worried. He is so honest and engaging that I was able to read just about everything here with pleasure.First of all, not everything Mr. Klosterman writes about in X concerns music and sports. There are a few essays on other topics. My favorites are probably his thoughts on The McLaughlin Group and his interview with Jonathan Franzen. His identification of John McLaughlin as the key to the success of that kind of argumentative TV that has often been copied but never successfully replicated is right on target. And, as a fan of Franzen’s work, I can still understand how difficult it must have been to conduct that interview and not write it up as something that shows him as a complete ass. But, in all honesty, it is his writing on music and sports that convinced me of his excellence because these are things about which I care very little and yet I was consistently engaged. I absolutely loved the first story in the book about a junior college basketball game that finished as a three-on-five contest where United Tribes Technical College, the team left with only three players, managed to hang on and win. The Tim Tebow article was interesting and not too dated as he now tries to rise through the ranks of professional baseball. Then there were his interviews with Jimmy Page and Eddie van Halen which could do little to mitigate the madness in their type of genius. My favorite, however,--well, the one that impressed me the most—was the essay on the work of KISS. I was never a KISS fan but my cousin was a huge fan. I feel now that I have a sense of why some people were so passionate about them. There’s more I could mention in this eclectic collection of items, some of which I know I read previously elsewhere in other publications. Let me just conclude with the fact that it is possible for good writers to make uninteresting subjects engaging. In my book, Mr. Klosterman is a good writer.

I love Chuck Klosterman in ways few could understand. This book is devoted to previously written articles and with a lot of up to date takes on the material. 70% of the articles are about Rock Music and the other 30% about Sports. Since I've read every book he's written I expected some overlap, but that was not the case. Having been a huge fan of Grantland I suspected some of that would show up here as well and I was wrong. The book feels fresh. My favorite interviews included Noel Gallagher and Jimmy Page. I'm not a fan of Kiss but Klosterman's obsessed and I totally get it. His love of the band is my own story about The Cars. His writing is immersive and dense. He is fun and smart just like my other Grantland hero Bill Simmons.Write more Chuck Klosterman please!j

When Chuck is on a roll, it is such a delight to read. In this kind of book you like some pieces more than others. He hits on almost all the stories for me. I love music and sports, and he has a really fresh way of looking at things and writing with great insights about them. I'm a fan.

How to Read Poetry Like a Professor: A Quippy and Sonorous Guide to Verse

Review

“[An] accessible guide… [Foster’s] discussion of symbolism is particularly effective and may help readers learn to actually enjoy the experience of interpreting a poem… Students struggling to understand poetry, or even English instructors struggling to teach it, could benefit immensely from Foster’s guidance.” (Publishers Weekly)“Foster’s enthusiasm is infectious…he has clearly enjoyed teaching and sharing his love of literature with his students during his long career. How to Read Poetry Like a Professor is not unlike that freshman English class that everyone vies to enroll in—entertaining and informative without being intimidating. The curriculum is on point, and in the end, you’ll have the tools to truly ‘get’ poetry, with all its manifest themes and variations.” (BookPage)

From the Back Cover

An essential primer to reading poetry that unlocks the keys to enjoying works from Lord Byron to the BeatlesNo literary form is as admired and feared as poetry. Admired for its lengthy pedigree—a line of poets extending back to a time before recorded history—and a ubiquitous presence in virtually all cultures, poetry is also revered for its great beauty and the powerful emotions it evokes. But the form has also instilled trepidation in its many admirers mainly because of a lack of familiarity and knowledge. Poetry demands more from readers—intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually—than other literary forms. Most of us started out loving poetry because it filled our beloved children’s books from Dr. Seuss to Robert Louis Stevenson. Eventually, our reading shifted to prose, and later when we encountered poetry again, we had no recent experience to make it feel familiar. But reading poetry doesn’t need to be so overwhelming. In an entertaining and engaging voice, Thomas C. Foster shows readers how to overcome their fear of poetry and learn to enjoy it once more. How to Read Poetry Like a Professor examines a wide array of poems and teaches readers:• How to read a poem to understand its primary meaning. • The different technical elements of poetry such as meter, diction, rhyme, line structures, length, order, and regularity, and how to learn to see these elements as allies rather than adversaries. • How to listen for a poem’s secondary meaning by paying attention to the echoes that the language of poetry summons up. • How to hear the music in poems—and the poetry in songs! With How to Read Poetry Like a Professor, readers can rediscover poetry and reap its many rewards.

If you have read the other Foster books on literature and novels, then the set-up and arrangement of this newest title (March 2018) will not surprise you or disrupt the flow of your reading into the ideas presented.Foster provides interesting commentary in the introduction that would be well-suited for the upper level grades as an re-introduction of sorts to poetry and poetic forms. Foster writes, "I think that for most people, however, is the matter isn't so much not liking poetry as feeling somehow overmatched, as if it were a contest and the other side had better equipment and more skill" (3). For the rest of the introduction, Foster presents poetry in its bare-bones form and puts the would-be poetry reader at ease for presenting what both bring to the table by way of text and reader. In "Sounds of Sense" and "Sound Beyond Sense," Foster brings the reader gently back to poetry if the reader is patient with returning to some of that early learning in meter and rhyme and literary devices. For the upper grade reader, these elements of the book may serve well as have the other two books mentioned prior. Early on within this book, however, I note that that Foster is reserved in the examples used and they seem more accessible and familiar and I have to think that this is due in part to the potential fear and trepidation poetry brings along with it.The rest of the book presents like the literature and novels with quippy titles followed by a short chapter which includes a definition of the term, and exploration of the term, and samples from the larger poetry community. As more and more classroom teachers seek out nonfiction text for the classroom, this one would be very nice not only as a primer for poetry but as an informing vehicle for the sounds, techniques, and moves we seek in prose.

As helpful as the "read literature like a professor--for kids" book, but now for poetry! The book is broken down into logical sections. Each section explains the basics (and throws in a few advanced things you can look up on your own) with several examples from well-known poets. It also has some humorous bits that are a bit self-deprecating of the human race and poetry in general.

Although I'm well read, poetry escapes me: I now know why - it's another language! Foster's book has opened my eyes to the grammar of poetry and given me greater understanding. I highly recommend this book

I really learnt a lot by reading this book, no surprise, as Thomas Foster has proved aa good writer. He opens the door to poetry and you become an expert to enjoy the best poets of all times

Senior English class required reading.

The author makes many statements along the lines of "every line has at least one sibilant" (here in reference to "Kubla Khan"). Well now, there's a famous poem about a snowy evening for which the title has three sibilants, the first three words contain sibilants, and every line has at least one sibilant. Indeed, if you split up almost any English text into ten-syllable swatches, the majority, probably the vast majority, will contain at least one sibilant. Take fourteen consecutive such swatches and it is nearly certain that at least one sound type's presence or absence will render this author agog. But it will take a lot more to convince me that a poet has intentionally or even subconsciously engineered anything of the sort.Elsewhere the author misquotes "purple mountain majesties" and concludes that the odd-numbered lines of "America the Beautiful" lack rhyme. In fact the correct quote supplies an eye rhyme for "skies", and the corresponding lines of the other stanzas contain two actual rhymes and another eye rhyme. The fifth line of each stanza is "America, America," and the poet wisely doesn't attempt any rhyme for this; the author will later offer terminology that could be used to assert that we have an internal, identical rhyme here. To make up for this, the seventh line of each stanza (e.g., "And crown thy good with brotherhood") contains an internal rhyme. In short, Foster has a great illustration for points he will make later, but a poor one for the point he is making. He quotes the first four lines of Shakespeare's Sonnet 73 to illustrate meter, and claims that the fourth line, "Bare ruin'd choirs where late the sweet birds sang" is not iambic pentameter at all, in part because it has only nine syllables. Well now. The author is free to make "ruin'd" an exact rhyme of "tuned", and you may even find a dictionary in which the third pronunciation of "ruin" is monosyllabic. More to the point is that Shakespeare routinely lets "ruin" contribute two syllables to a line; for him, such words as "ruinate", "ruination", and Latin "ruina" were entirely familiar, so he would hardly make "ruin" a monosyllable. For someone in Foster's line of work, this should all be second nature. He also claims that "bare" is stressed, but it is hardly more stressed than "birds" later in the line and in any event this sort of thing is routine in Shakespeare's or anyone else's iambs. The author is not one to do your thinking for you and is not likely to drone on throughout a lecture. But he has been thoughtful enough to raise some important questions and at times to give enough of a thoughtful answer so as to raise additional good questions. I'm inclined to think you will enjoy a lot of this book. You may have to supply your own poems, as there are rather few in this book, and even fewer in their entirety.

Very helpful
