Swimming Made Easy: The Total Immersion Way for Any Swimmer to Achieve Fluency, Ease, and Speed in Any Stroke

From the Publisher

SWIMMING MADE EASY? YOU MUST BE KIDDING! Countless millions around the world would love to be able to swim better -- not fast necessarily -- just efficiently and comfortably. But, for virtually all, swimming well enough to enjoy all its benefits remains an elusive goal. Too bad, because swimming can be uniquely beneficial – a non-pounding, joint-friendly fitness activity that exercises the entire body and is suitable for everyone from toddlers to seniors. Being able to swim well is a truly valuable gift – and an essential life skill. But here's the universal Catch 22: Humans are "hard-wired" to be inefficient in the water. Everything we do instinctively tends to result in clumsy flailing and exhaustion. Swimming really well requires expert instruction; the better the instruction, the more beneficial and satisfying your swimming experience. But traditional swimming instruction is almost universally ineffective, because it focuses on "Human Swimming" technique -- arm and leg churning, which just reinforces our inbred inefficiencies. As a result, "average" swimmers can only watch "good" swimmers with envy, assuming it takes "talent" -- or endless training -- to swim that well. The message of Terry Laughlin's groundbreaking new book, Swimming Made Easy, is that swimming well is not a gift reserved for a talented few, but something attainable by everyone. As U.S. Masters Coach of the Year Emmett Hines wrote: "Laughlin makes the effortless grace of elite swimmers accessible to 'average' swimmers with simple, logical, proven steps that make fluid, powerful swimming a HABIT rather than a chance encounter." This is the most hopeful message that lap, fitness or competitive swimmers or triathletes have ever heard. Until Laughlin's first book, Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster and Easier (1996), all previous books on swimming mainly recycled the same set of misleading and mistaken "rules" about what matters in swimming. They made the improvement process intimidating and confusing, and ultimately resulted in little progress. Laughlin's first book was an instant hit with readers because, as they reported, "It makes sense," and "This really works; I can feel a difference from the first lap." Where previous books had mainly prescribed laps and more laps or presented swimming technique as something akin to rocket science, Laughlin advised human swimmers to think and swim more like fish. Fishlike Swimming, as he dubbed his method, focuses on avoiding struggle and turbulence by learning to be balanced and "slippery" and learning to swim fluently before trying to swim far or fast. Since publication of the previous Total Immersion book, Laughlin and his associates have taught TI techniques to swimmers of all ages and abilities, from 4 years to 80-plus, from non-swimmers to Olympians and everyone in between. At every level the response has been enthusiastic. As JoAnn Della Torre, a swim instructor in Naperville, IL, said, "You can always spot a TI swimmer by his or her grace and flow." The new book, Swimming Made Easy, details the insights and lessons from thousands of teaching and learning experiences and breaks new ground in making the swimming-improvement process even simpler and more direct. It also provides foolproof steps and learning sequences for learning to be Fishlike in any stroke. Here's a sampling of some of the paradigm-smashing information in SME: WHAT'S HOLDING YOU BACK? IT'S THE WATER, NOT YOUR FITNESS LEVEL. Lap-based approaches to swimming improvement are doomed to fail because, unless you're efficient to start with, more laps simply make your "struggling skills" more durable. If you can walk, run, or cycle a mile or more, you're fit enough to swim a similar distance. A lack of "swimming fitness" isn’t why you run out of gas. It’s the way your body interacts with water. Chapter 1 outlines five simple skills guaranteed to help you work with, not against, the water. HOW YOU CAN SWIM LIKE AN OLYMPIAN. Your instincts tell you to swim faster by churning your arms faster, but the world’s best swimmers are faster because they travel MUCH farther with every stroke than you do, not because they move their arms faster. Chapter 2 explains why Stroke Length is so advantageous and exactly what you can do to get it. NO MORE SINKING FEELING. Survival instincts make us want to stay on top of the water: As a result virtually every swimmer spends most of their energy trying not to sink. They think they’re pulling and kicking to move forward, but, in reality, their arms and legs are mainly occupied with fighting "that sinking feeling." But, the fact is, our bodies are supposed to sink.. Good balance and body position is the art of sinking in a horizontal position. Chapter 3 tells you how. SWIM "TALLER," SWIM EASIER. Most swimmers believe that "stroke technique" means "how you push water back with your hands." Want to swim better? Tweak your armstroke. Want to swim faster? Put more muscle into it. But, hydro-dynamically, the most important thing you can do with your hands is use them to lengthen your bodyline. A longer bodyline reduces drag. Chapter 4 explains how to swim "taller." DON'T FIGHT THE WATER, SLIP THROUGH IT. The gospel according to coaches says: "Swimming is hard." The price of speed is "more" and "harder." The gospel is wrong: The one non-negotiable, unavoidable, unyielding limiter of speed is resistance, not your capacity for work. No workout, wet or dry, can overcome the drag created when you try to bully your way through the water. But smart, strategic choices you make in how to "pierce" the water as you swim can reduce drag dramatically. Chapter 5 tells you exactly how to become more "slippery" and Chapters 7 and 8 explain how to generate effortless propulsion. A STRONG KICK IS ESSENTIAL. Swimming instructors always start by having you kick and kick and kick some more. No wonder everyone thinks a powerful kick is the key to swimming well -- and then spends countless hours on kickboards vainly pursuing it. In fact, kickboard training does nothing for your swimming, and the best kick is the one requiring the least effort. Chapter 8 explains how to integrate an effortless kick seamlessly with fluent body motion. These examples are drawn from just the first half the book. The second half offers a detailed plan, with progressive and sequential how-to steps, that will allow any individual to become their "own best swimming coach."

I used to hate lap swimming but now I love it, and it's because of this book. Laughlin has reinvented swim instruction. He's made it fun. He's made it easy. And the resulting stroke is heaven. The exercises do take some effort and dilligence to master. But if you go slow don't move on until you have mastered each exercise, as instructed, you'll open up a whole new world of swimming enjoyment. I often feel like I'm flying in the water. This former water buffalo now swims like a fish.Note: there's a brand new Total Immersion book being touted on the TI website, which I haven't read. You may want to look into that, instead. Also, some reviews and TI suggest the DVD as the best method, but that wasn't the case for me. In my case, it was the clear, detailed instructions in the book that made it happen.

I have been a coach for several years and this book really hit home. I really enjoyed learning about the balance of our bodies in the water and how we can better maneuver ourselves thru the h2o. Highly recommend this book for any level of swimmer and/or coach. I will definitely use these techniques in practice for my swimmers and even with myself (masters swimmer).

Fantastic! It has never been easier to change my swimming or teach my adult lessons or swim team kids.

good information and motivating

....Was wanting the book shown in the picture, but received an earlier edition. Nothing wrong with it, but the purchase was to replace a lost borrowed book.

This is a good book for the beginning swimmer, but I would recommend "Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier" over this book. It is by the same author, Terry Laughlin.

I took a TI weekend work shop and bought the book. The book has all the priceless information I learnt during the work shop that will help you find your balance in the water and be more fish like when swimming. It's a handy book that you will refer back to over and over again to become a better swimmer. But of course nothing can replace the hours of practice of what you will learn from this book.

Great book!

#5,014 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

As seems perpetually the case with McGuire's work, this book was a fun horror-in-the-woods romp with a side of Cryptids, while simultaneously ensuring that her characters show the kind of diversity the "real world" actually holds.Sidebar: One of the things I love best about McGuire's writing is that her characters run the FULL gamut of representation. She writes racially-, sexually-, *biologically*-, and gender-diverse characters into her books in a way that never feels like tokenism, and seldom has anything to do with the plot - unless she's calling out discriminations for the garbage that they are, and showing, through her excellent characterizations, the kind of pain and damage inflicted on people through hate and fear.Antimony's latest contretemps with the Crossroads was fun, intense at times, and followed gleefully the northeastern/new englander-style horror-in-the-woods roadmaps, while still continuing McGuire's worldbuilding from both the InCryptid series and the Ghost Roads books. If there was any weak point to this at all, I think it was the almost sidebar-nature appearance of a member of "The Covenant", which in previous books has been cause for all the conflict & horror to descend at mere mention. Here, however, in the face of the Crossroads, the Covenant seems heavily diminished as a horrific entity. All in all, as is always the case, fully worth the pre-order and will read again. :)

The cornfields were a slow start, the rest of the book is a slam dunk for me, exceeding my expectations.Antimony Price is in way over her head. She is being hunted by a cult that can track her anywhere, and she has made a bad deal with a supernatural force that is about to come due. The one thing that she’s got going for her is her friends, and wow does she have some great friends. I really didn’t like Antimony much when she was introduced many books ago. However she has grown on me, or possibly just grown up. Here she puts it all on the line for her family, both biological and chosen. And you can’t help loving her for that.

Another great installment. I've really come to like Antimony Price over the course of these last three books, and of course Sam as well. Seanan's world-building is phenomenal, but the way she's build the Price family tree is equally as impressive. The pacing of this one is spot-on as well: fast enough, with enough twists, to keep things interesting, slow enough to have Annie's thoughts about her family tree and relationships feel like they're just tangential info-dumps.And the extra novella was a fun, if at times heart-wrenching, read as well.

What a satisfying ending (for now) of the trials of Annie Price! I was at a point where I really needed something fun to read. I can’t think of any series that’s more fun to read than the InCryptid books. Great stories. Great characters, some deliciously not human. Great humor. If you’re reading the series already, you definitely won’t be disappointed in this book. But you already knew that. If you’re not reading the series you’re missing a lot of fun.

As always, this was a very well written tale, nice twists & turns in the plotting. The first few pages take a little bit of necessary "set-up" time - esp for those new to the series. After that, things go very nicely - reader interest is assured.I love this series - esp for the great imagination of the author" - her ability to create interesting characters, - great plotting - and her ability to make the unusual so very possible. My only regret, is that the mice are not in this story (necessary, as explained in the previous story of "Annie") - but I'm sure they'll be back as the series continues.

The adventurous Price family remains, as always, in the bizarre spectrum of life in general. Reading one of their quests requires compiling so many improbable and sometimes contradictory into single sentences that, after awhile, it seems commonplace. This universe is wildly imaginative and fun to immerse yourself in. Annie develops by leaps and bounds over the course of her time in the limelight. I look forward with great anticipation to the next book to see what the family gets up to next.

Loved it! This was the best Antimony book so far. She's growing up without losing her snark...I was slightly disappointed to find a preview instead of more book at the end, but that's publishers for you. Anyway I really liked the crossroads issue and how it was solved.

While I will be sad to lose Antimony as the narrator I am super excited for Sarah books. This one was a great ending and I really didn't expect it to go the way it did. No spoilers from me, except to say I want a road trip novella please.Ok mild spoiler for the story at the endI want a story about how the nice got email. Pretty please. Do they have a smart phone? A laptop? I have so many questions
