Of all of the books in the realm of social work, this is the most comprehensive. It serves as an excellent resource for persons wanting a very broad stroke of nearly everything social work related. It also acts as a gatekeeper to refer practitioners to the source material of the many modalities.

I'm majoring in Human Services so I have a lot of papers I need to write with scholarly resources. This book has been a lifesaver and is filled with a wealth of information. I'm very glad I purchased it.

The Social Workers Desk Reference is everything I thought it would be. There are a plethora of topics included in this book but it is very organized in easy to understand sections. It is not hard to find the information you are looking for quickly. The discussions within this book are very helpful when trying to gain a better understanding of ethical and cultural issues with working with children or families with special needs and vulnerable populations.

fantastic read and immensely helpful in my career

I love this book! The divisions are small in each section. Case examples are provided making it easy to use with clients. This is a must have for all social workers. If there is any field in social work you ma have questions about, this book answers them and more. I recommend this book to all social workers. It won't let you down. It will help improve your skills and is wonderful for class learning.

This book is for professional use, therefore it is not a matter of like or dislike, it serves it's purpose.

I purchased the Desk Reference to study for my MSW licensure exam. It's filled with the entire scope of social work practice and it's organized in a way that the subjects connect and related well to each other. It's easy to investigate the many aspects of social work. A few more specifics and slightly more detailed articles would have been great. But those are small complaints. Overall, a great resource!

The chapters are short and informative, but the book is too heavy to carry around campus.

Review

“Asia’s The Curious Kid’s Science Book is not just another book of experiments to fill a rainy day. This book guides parents through the process of inspiring a sense curiosity in children, and developing a set of skills to help them problem solve, and be scientific thinkers. Through real-life experience, Citro demonstrates that even very young children can design experiments, document progress, and share their discoveries in a meaningful way. While the book is full of easy, fun, and meaningful science activities, its real value is its approach to helping parents inspire a sense of exploration and discovery that will benefit their children long after they have grown.”—Bob PflugfelderFounder of ScienceBob.comSeen on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Live with Kelly and MichaelAuthor of the Nick and Tesla series“This is a delightful book that draws on a child’s natural curiosity to impart the basics of scientific inquiry—from question to hypothesis to experiment to the results and conclusions. Children will love it and parents will learn some things, too.”—Dr. Henry L. Roediger IIIJames S. McDonnell Distinguished University ProfessorWashington University in St. LouisAuthor of Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning“Asia Citro is a welcome new voice in the world of science education. As an educator and mother of two young children, she has a deep understanding that children are naturally curious, ask good questions, and freely investigate the world around them when given the chance. What The Curious Kid’s Science Book does so well, which so many science books for kids tend to miss, is the celebration of this innate curiosity and penchant for experimentation. With this understanding in hand, this book encourages children not to replicate tried and true science projects, but to ask their own questions and think like real scientists! From building a hypothesis to testing out theories, The Curious Kid’s Science Book will harness the scientist inside children and their adult counterparts. Bravo!”—Rachelle DoorleyArts Educator at TinkerLab.comAuthor of Tinkerlab: A Hands-On Guide for Little Inventors“I am a firm believer in the power of children’s questions to open doors to discovery. Asia Citro has unlocked that power in this collection of explorations that even the youngest of scientists will enjoy.”—Tom RobinsonNational Board Certified TeacherBestselling author of The Everything Kids’ Science Experiments Book“Perhaps children are the best scientists and explorers because they aren’t afraid to ask the question ‘Why?’ I encourage you to use the easy-to-do hands-on activities in this book to fuel your children’s innate creativity and problem-solving skills. Plus, without knowing it, they’ll have fun learning science and math!”—Captain Wendy LawrenceFormer NASA astronaut“Based on the premise that young children are curious, observant, and determined problem solvers, The Curious Kid’s Science Book is a brilliant resource that will get teachers and parents of young children excited about exploring the world of science in the classroom or at home. Asia has photographed a wonderful and broad collection of easy-to-put-into-action scientific investigations and shared them along with simple tips for keeping science fun and engaging. As you and your child get busy exploring the ideas shared throughout Asia's book, your young scientist will be developing the confidence and basic skills needed to be a capable and competent problem solver in many areas of life!”—Deborah J. StewartFounder of TeachPreschool.orgAuthor of Ready for Kindergarten!“As an educator who values creativity, discovery, exploring, and experimenting, I’m thrilled to recommend Asia Citro’s science activity book that encourages kids to ask their own questions. Kids will explore answers and investigate their own outcomes, building on curiosity and creative inspiration. I especially like that easy-to-find materials are used. As a homeschooler and science major, I feel this book is a must in my children's classroom and curriculum. It focuses on allowing children to explorer scientific concepts on their own without being fed every answer. It does give project ideas that require a little bit of preparation and guidance but encourages parents and teachers to allow the student/child to ask questions, complete the experiment, and then answer the questions they asked. It focuses on using the scientific method on a beautiful manner for young learners.

We love, love, LOVE this book! So much, in fact, that it's become a go-to birthday party gift when paired with some of the items needed for the experiments and it's always a total party hit. What I love most about it is that at 5 years old, my daughter can take the book, gather her supplies, and try many of the explorations independently based on the beautiful photographs included throughout. I love that she's learning all about the scientific process through actually experiencing it. Highly recommend!

I wouldn’t recommend this. I strongly dislike that it does not give specific info about what variables create what effects. A good science book should tell parents what to expect with various experiments so that we can help shape the most enjoyable and educational experience for our kids whatever their level of interest is and this book doesn’t do that. Kid losing interest? Add some vinegar. Kid loves it? Here are some open ended ways to help them explore.

What an amazing resource for fun things to do with your kids! I purchased all three books and I must say they are all wonderful and well worth the investment. We have completed several of the projects already and plan to do some every week. There are so many fun things and variations that it will take us all year to complete and then we can start all over again! What I love most about the projects is most of them use every day things you have at your house and if you don't have something it's not an expensive item to buy especially if you are a member of Sams or Costco. I highly recommend the liquid watercolors as they are fun to work with, do not stain and have a much more vibrant color. I honestly don't know who is having more fun, the kids playing in all of our creations or me getting to prepare and make the projects! It is fun for the entire family and gives you plenty to do inside or outside. The learning that happens is absolutely wonderful!!

I LOVE this book! We will be using this book for my daughter's science curriculum this year. My daughter loves to look through the book to see what all she will get to make. I will be excited to start making these experiments soon! I love that it is based off of a child's natural instincts to play and learn. This is perfect to our homeschooling style.

This book should be in the personal library of every elementary and middle school teacher. The books says it is geared towards 4-8 year olds but I can see this book working in even higher ages. The book isn't what I first expected, which was cooker cutter, step by step science activities. Instead, the book is the best of open-ended inquiry, which is how I was trained to teach science as a high school chemistry teacher. I was pumped. There are challenges, exploration activities, ideas and experiments. The book asks probing questions meant to elicit young wonder. My 4 year old would not "get" the jist of some of the activities but others she will love right now, such as the plant activities. The other activities she will grow into, and once she is able to read, I know she will go through this book in it's entirety.

Bought this for my granddaughter's birthday & it's a hit with her and with Mom! There are activities suitable for 4 to 12 year olds at least, so this is a good investment. No fancy expensive equipment needed...just time and patience!

I have 4 kids and 4 years old being my oldest and we LOVE this book for all of them. I bought this book because I needed some ideas of science like things to do that weren't to hard to do with all 4 of them. They all actually learn something every time we do an experiment and they LOVE doing them!!!!

Review

"Let me preface this review by saying that I am a fan of the X-files, Millennium, Lovecraft and conspiracy theories. The premise of DELTA GREEN is fully integrated into the Cthulhu world, and it is surprising how well it fits. The Player Characters take the role of government employees working in various Federal Agencies (primarily law enforcement). They use their power and influence to investigate supernatural and alien phenomena, and to battle the forces behind them. All this is done under the umbrella of the illegal DELTA GREEN conspiracy. "The concept works very well. The Player Characters are given a reason to work together, have access to powerful resources (but limited by the illegal nature of their work), and have a reason to adventure past the first encounter. These are three things Cthulhu roleplaying has been missing in the past , but no longer. "Overall and in the details, I am ecstatically happy with DELTA GREEN." (Reviewed by Jason Langlois on 03/21/97 for RPG.net) "Delta Green is Pagan Publishing's sourcebook for Call of Cthulhu in the 1990s, and it is absolutely terrific -- nothing short of an intelligent, useful, intriguing reworking of the venerable Call of Cthulhu game itself. While set in the realm of aliens and conspiracies made famous by the X-Files, it exists as a logical extension of the Call of Cthulhu 1920s setting, as well. It is almost eerily well done -- All of this is written with a degree of thoughtfulness and effort sadly lacking in most RPG products, and the results show. The setting is consistent, logical, and eerily plausible in the same way that the best conspiracy-nut rantings are -- everything _almost_ makes sense, and the fact that it doesn't quite add up just makes it creepier. "Call of Cthulhu has always been my favorite game, but with Delta Green, it got even better." (Playtest Review by Eric Brochu on 11/23/97 for RPG.net) "This game is a truly horrifying update of the Mythos in the 90's. All of their extrapolation makes sense, and further builds a creeping sense of horror set in our time. This is to the Cthulhu game of today what "Masks of Nyarlathotep" was in the past. It gets an "A." (Capsule Review by Scott Shafer on 02/02/98 for RPG.net) "If you're not into gaming, but are into conspiracy theories, you couldn't go wrong with this book. It is a highly entertaining read all by itself. If you are not into gaming, but into the Cthulhu Mythos as a writer, and have been contemplating using some of the conspiracy theory material in your stories, you couldn't go too far wrong in utilizing this sourcebook. "Whether you are a role player, a conspiracy enthusiast, or a Mythos fan, there is something in this sourcebook for you and, as such, it is highly recommended. It is a complete package within itself, but is easily moved into other arenas of gaming (non-Mythos conspiracy RPGs), conspiracies, and the Mythos." -- Edward P. Berglund for Nightscapes #7

I've never played anything but 1920's Call of Cthulhu, and have never been to keen on the idea on modern-day CoC. But I must admit, the Delta Green campaign setting is really impressive. After having taken a look at it and purchasing it, I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a change of pace in their CoC game. The best comparison I can think of is this: If CoC 1920's is the movie "Alien," Delta Green is the movie "Aliens." Both are cool, both have the same creatures as the adversaries, but they both have different moods and different types of protagonists. The background info in this book is so realistic, if I were a bit more mentally unbalanced :), I could easily believe every bit of it as gospel truth, not just a game setting.

Widely believed to be the single best campaign setting of all time for table-top RPG's, Delta Green perfects the Call of Cthulhu engine for a modern setting, and is a must-have on every gamer's shelf. If you haven't played it, you need to wrap up your current campaign and get this to the table. There’s recently been published a new 2nd Edition of Delta Green that I think cleans up both the mechanics and fluff, that I recommend, and is significantly less expensive due to being in-print and more widely available.

To call DELTA GREEN a supplement for Call of Cthulhu is to do it a great injustice. Even if you don't play the game, but are a Lovecraft aficionado, you owe it to yourself to pick this up and see what Tynes and company have done. This is not your father's Cthulhu Mythos. This is something much, much nastier.Gone are the days where monsters lurked in dark places, and could be banished with the right spells. The stars are right - right here, right now, and the Mythos has kept pace with modernity, corrupting openly, though humanity is still too blind to see. Delta Green has been fighting them ever since Innsmouth and 1927, a hidden conspiracy within the government dedicated to seeking out and destroying that which threatens humanity.Only trouble is, even the government has disavowed Delta Green, in favour of collusion with the enemy. But the menace is so great that Delta Green continues, an illegal conspiracy hidden in the bowels of that which wants too destroy it. Delta Green isn't Mulder or Scully, seeking the truth that nobody else knows. Delta Green *knows* the truth, and is making sure nobody else suffers from knowing that either.DELTA GREEN takes everything we know about modern day conspiracy theory - Roswell, Area 51, Majestic-12, UFOs, and merges it seamlessly with the battle against the forces of the Cthulhu Mythos. The secret history it reveals is frighteningly plausible, and like Lovecraft's fiction, nags at you and makes you doubt its fictional qualities. As a way of bringing a moribund CoC campaign from the gothic horror of the 1920s to the survivalist horror of the 1990s, it is second to none. Think you could have dealt with those creepy crawlies if you only had an AK-47 instead of a revolver? Think again. The psychological cost of fighting terrors from beyond is not forgotten either, with Delta Green agents wandering shell-shocked from encounter to encounter. And as I said, as a means of stimulating your imagination to bring Lovecraft up to date, it is also superb. Anyone who thinks Lovecraft's themes are hackneyed and old only needs to read this to see how horrifyingly relevant they still are.Buy this book, and its companion DELTA GREEN: COUNTDOWN, which describes the UK and Russian counterparts to Delta Green. The truth is here. And it's hungry.

This is the best RPG suppliment I have ever read, bar none. It's a great READ, even if you are not a gamer. Interesting background, lots of plot hooks as well. The group that did this book are great writers and are loving what they do and it shows. If you are into Horror, X-Files, Call of Cthulhu, ect...buy it to read, if not play. The book is curently out of print, but I understand that it will be reprinted in 2006 as a hardcover with d20 rules. Anyone wanting to write or publish an RPG should read this book and use it as an example. A MUST.

Delta Green was originally spoken of years ago, when Pagan Publishing was still in its infancy. I almost gave up on it many times, but when it finally arrived, I could see that the wait was well worth it. Delta Green is one of the most well-crafted products ever to come out in the role-playing genre. It raises the standard and, since its release two years ago, we have indeed seen games and supplements become bigger, better, and more well-thought-out. I think we can attribute this in part to Pagan Publishing, which has shown the gaming public how good things can be.

This amazing game (and just plain interesting read!) is currently back in print. You can pick up the new edition, converted to D20, by heading to the publisher's web site. Pagan Publishing and TC Corp have done a great service to its fans by releasing this reprint!

I would have given a much lower score based on an HPL feel scale; but I must admit the product is solid even if it has nothing to do with classic CoC; its a totally different game. That other type of flavor game was mainly to appeal to people that:1) Felt uneasy to play in the 20s2) Wanted more fire power or modern organized resources3) Were fan of X-Files even if DG came a bit before the TV series, the popularity grew much after thatSo its a good game to play Mulder and Scully or even men in black kinda investigators with those sunglasses and Steyr riflesIts definitally Modern horror type and not for the classic HPL type of game fans

Terrible addition to CoC. A handful of modern occupations. A few decent new skills. And more guns is always good. As far as adding anything to the roleplaying aspect in the CoC world it is a 300+ page waste of time. Some interesting reading on how they work all the conspiracy theories into the Cthulhu Mythos but not very beneficial for gaming. Hoping the new Delta Green books will be better but not going to hold my breath.

Review

“Every web site, every email, every instant message travels through real junctions in a real network of real cables. It’s all too awesome to behold. Andrew Blum’s fascinating book demystifies the earthly geography of this most ethereal terra incognita.” (Joshua Foer, bestselling author of Moonwalking with Einstein)“Quixotic and winning. . . . Valuable, comic. . . . [Blum has] a knack for bundling packets of data into memorable observations. What makes Tubes more than an unusual sort of travel book, is [Blum’s] sense of moral curiosity.” (New York Times)“Tubes is an absorbing tale of this new technology, as well as a wonderful account of the Internet’s growth and the people who made it possible.” (Science News)“Clever, enterprising . . . Tubes uncovers an Internet that resembles nothing so much as a fantastic steam-punk version of itself.” (Boston Globe)“Engaging. . . . Full of memorable images that make the internet’s complex architecture easier to comprehend. . . . Blum leaves readers pondering questions that would not have occurred to them before and better informed about an innovation most of us take for granted.” (The Guardian)“A charming look at the physical infrastructure that underlies the Web.” (Scientific American)“Fascinating and unique. . . . [A] captivating behind-the-scenes tour of how (and where) the Internet works. . . . [Blum] has a gift for breathing life into his subjects.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“A satisfying postmodern quest. . . . The history, in particular, is one of the best and most memorable I have ever read.” (New Scientist)“Blum paints a vivid picture of the Internet, and gives a sense that it is more than just the mysterious interstitial digital space between your computer and mine. It is, increasingly, the backbone that supports our daily life, and Mr. Blum is an able anatomist.” (New York Journal of Books)“Ingeniously beguiling. . . . Blum is a smart, imaginative, evocative writer who embraces the task of making his readers feel the wonder represented by these unprepossessing objects.” (Laura Miller, Salon)

#59,755 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book got me into computers and networking. I now work at a Big 4 technology company designing network architectures despite having majored in Psychology. I owe an incredible amount to this book and to this author. I literally thought one day, "I have no idea how the internet works". I looked for books, and I had two choices, either this book, or a $160 textbook like this Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach (7th Edition) that devotes hundreds of pages to different graph-based computer algorithms. This book appeals to two kinds of audiences: ** 1. If you don't know anything about the internet. This book is the best, most easy introduction to get. That's good, because it's also one of the only introductions that's not a textbook. You won't learn everything, because that's a lot of computer science algorithms, but you'll have the best overview from this book. The stories are good, but not excessive like in Malcolm Gladwell's books. ** 2. If you are under 35 and work in technology, no matter how technical your role. This is because so much of the technology you use now is virtual...software defined networking, virtual machines, virtual routers, VLANs, VPCs, AWS, etc. The internet is still a very very physical place, made up of hundreds of thousands of miles or wire, giant internet exchange centers (like the kind Facebook runs out of Nebraska that you'll never see), $80,000 routers made by Brocade that people like Verizon buy, etc. If you want to know how the internet works in the same way that you can open your car and know how everything works (as opposed to just buying a Tesla), get this book.P.S. If you are now pretty technical and want to move beyond the algorithms and other important-but-not-real-world kinds of learning, I suggest you check out Network Warrior: Everything You Need to Know That Wasn't on the CCNA Exam.

I do not agree with some reviewers claiming that the author lacks proper technical insight to write a worthy book about internetworking. It seems to me that it was a deliberate decision not to lean too much on tech details when describing how Internet works. Certainly I could not expect this title to describe inner workings of the TCP/IP suite, or how routers from different networks negotiate routes via BGP. The author, starting with a realization that most people don't notice the existence of networks (Internet is seen only by the content pulled from servers), tried to describe their physicality. Internet is not a nondescript "cloud", it happens to consist of cables. Lots and lots of cables.I like Andrew Blum's remarks on how Internet "tubes" strongly depend on world's geography and existing infrastructure. Cables are placed along roads, the largest Internet exchanges are placed in cities which already were commerce hubs, undersea cables originate and end near ports. Data centers are built in cold places with abundance of cheap electricity. The Internet, commonly perceived as ubiquitous, at its very core (the backbone network) is running over a not-that-large set of routes, governed by a handful of companies. Also appealing to me were the attempts to capture the atmosphere (the nature) of visited buildings and people; probably a bit stereotypical (all network engineers wear hoodies), but enjoyable. The author's penchant for expressing philosophical remarks (mainly on how virtual relates to physical) was annoying a few times but, OTOH, they make it a book which tries not only to convey Internet's architecture, but also its idea. A pleasant read, IMHO even for die-hard network specialists.

I'm an engineer and have always been interested in networking technology. When I heard an interview with author Andrew Blum regarding this book, on NPR, I immediately decided to buy and read it. The book is interesting and insightful in parts, but I found it a bit superficial and was somewhat disappointed with the superficiality of most of it. I guess I was expecting something more like Malcolm Gladwell's quantitative analyses of many of the topics that he writes about, but instead this book is mostly a travelogue of the author going around and just looking at various internet exchange points and data centers. There were two chapters that were really great: one concerned Andrew Blum's meeting with Leonard Kleinrock, who in some ways "founded" the Internet when he established the first inter-network link in the original Arpanet. Hearing one of the Internet's founders explain all the things he did and didn't envision for it was fascinating. The most interesting chapter is the second-to-last, in which the author observes the laying of an undersea fiber-optic cable in Portugal, which will connect it to the Azores and Africa. The nitty-gritty details of forming the physical interconnections between distant points are described here in an up-close way that I found far more satisfying than the detached, tourist-like point of view that the author takes in most of the book.
