I really liked this book. It was a great read, it had a great flow to it. It was great to hear the other side of mountaineering and climbing. It incorporated a lot of different people's views and was definitely a different view of mountaineering and climbing that no one really talks about or sees.
I liked this book a lot . I have both read and listened to it. I enjoyed both. The audio is better. I think it is definitely worth the time of anybody, male or female.
The book itself is fascinating, and offers an unusual perspective on high-altitude mountaineering. However it's spoiled by the appalling print quality of this edition. It looks like a poor-quality photocopy, and some pages are so bad as to be almost illegible. I highly recommend the book, but if you can find another edition then do so!
Written from a completely different perspective. Filled in some gaps. Good to see the other side of climbers lives, even when that climber has been lost.
I've read many, many books on mountaineering, and I wasn't sure if this might not be a bit maudlin, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Maria Coffey has written a clear-eyed, compelling book about the experiences of those who love mountaineers, as well as a intimate look at what compels athletes who are addicted to such a dangerous sport. Well worth the read.
This book spells out the extreme effect on the loved ones left behind during the time the climber is away. To love a climber and have a relationship, marriage, children with, one needs to face the price one will pay.... Those left behind have their unsung extreme climbs to do.
This book may help heal some of the wounds from climbing. Maria did a wonderful job researching and writing this story. It continues where some of the classic books of climbing left off, giving the reader a behind the curtain look at what happened after the climbs. It may also give comfort to climbers that there are other people out there will similar feelings and a willingness to engage in Deep Play. It may send some of us back into the mountains by letting us know it is okay to "feed the rat" when it is hungry. (and for some it is always hungry)
This book discussed the psyche of high-altitude climbers and how their actions affect their loved ones. Very interesting and unlike anything I've read about mountain climbing.

This is just a biologist reminding everyone again that evolution by natural selection is scientifically factual, and creation myths and folktales are not. Here and there, he flits back and forth between insisting that the sciences and the humanities need each other, but then extolling the sciences as superior. Well, okay.The sciences are undoubtedly superior for describing and classifying the phenomena that we experience, including ourselves. But recognizing the evolutionary bases of the human condition says nothing about the meaning of our existence—it only clears away the authority of mythological accounts that are rooted in supernatural revelation. (And his discussion of those accounts, while appropriately dismissive, is still irritatingly simplistic.) Remaining open is the question of whether, given the condition of the human species as a product of natural selection, anything resembling meaning or purpose is possible, and, if so, how we might discover or create it. Wilson has nothing to say on that question, and fails even to acknowledge that it might be asked.He does suggest an interesting idea, which is that "individual selection favors what we call sin and group selection favors virtue" (p. 179), but it's not clear how that ought to affect the question of meaning. Undoubtedly, we humans experience a troubling conflict between our individuality and our need for social support, but that is a condition of our existence, not its meaning.If you are looking for another restatement that, yes, evolution by natural selection really does have more explanatory power than supernaturalist creation myths for establishing the conditions of human existence, then this is a decent little book. But it offers nothing further, particularly if you are excited by the title and the prospect of tackling the problem of meaning. And for those who are not already persuaded of our evolutionary nature, I doubt this book will shift your view; he's preaching to the choir.

But more accurately, it's a scientific creation narrative about how we came to be what we are, what makes us special in the cosmos, and how we can use that specialness to improve our future.I downloaded this book the day it was published and devoured it over the course of the next two days. Now, a few days later, I am still basking in the satisfying glow and deep comfort of that extraordinary experience.The book pleased me not because it offered any major new scientific concepts or ideas. In fact, I found I was already quiet familiar with nearly all of the science presented in the book. If you've read Wilson's other bestselling books, and you're reasonably well-read in the fields of prehistory, evolutionary biology, cultural anthropology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and comparative religions, then you, too, will find little new here. What was beautiful and remarkable was how the author was able to weave these many big concepts together to form a stunning tapestry of truth, a new science-based creation narrative.In this book, Wilson recounts his personal scientific take on the epic journey of human evolution. Wilson focuses that journey heavily on his recent groundbreaking thesis about the importance of human eusociality (see his "The Social Conquest of Earth"). The book also touches briefly on the latest scientific knowledge concerning instinct, the biology of religion, free will, and consciousness. As an important side note--yet given a whole chapter of its own--the author makes it clear that in the greater scheme of things, it is "microbes that rule the Galaxy." For me, the most entertaining and enlightening chapter was the one entitled, "Portrait of E. T." In that chapter, the author speculates--based on scientific theory--about the characteristics he would expect from any "human-grade aliens on Earth-like planets." He gives us eight characteristics; taken together, they form a startling and eye-opening portrait, one significantly different from that we currently see in most science fiction.Finally, the book celebrates the dual importance of the humanities in addition to the sciences as the joint hallmarks of human achievement. He makes a point that if intelligent aliens were ever to contact earth, they would probably be far less interested in our science than our arts and humanities. After all, if they were to contact us, it is obvious that we would have little knowledge about science that they would not already know. It is our amazing accumulation of cultural heritage that would fascinate and thrill them.In closing, it would be an enormous oversight if I failed to note what a sublime pleasure it always is to read Wilson's clear, thoughtful, eloquent and exquisite prose. Nothing much new in this book. Having used a food processor for years, most of the recipes and tips were ho hum. Most recipes do not stand out as something that I want to try. Also, as one reviewer pointed out, many of the recipes are found in other America's Test Kitchen cookbooks. This would be a great introductory book to include with a food processor gift for a new bride. My food processor (the Cuisinart 14 cup) is a work horse in my kitchen; this book would be good for the kitchen where it is underused. Would be a good reference book if you are on the fence about which food processor to purchase. The book itself is very attractive, with beautiful pictures for all recipes. However, I found the small font and light print on the shiny white pages difficult to read when placed in a cookbook stand. Also, it does not stand open on its own. Missing an inclusive Table of Contents, this book is not very user friendly. This small cookbook (75 recipes) is not on par with my other America's Test Kitchen cookbooks, but that is, of course, reflected in the lower price. This cookbook would be a good food processor primer. I'll most likely pass it along to someone who is new in the kitchen.

This book will remedy both issues!I consider myself a very experienced home cook, and my food processor is an invaluable tool in my kitchen. I jumped for joy when I got it! Even now, I still use it a couple times each week, grating huge blocks of cheese in an instant, mixing up pizza dough, making pesto and blending marinades. This book has me excited about my processor all over again, to try these new recipes! Mushroom Bolognese, Vegetable Pot Pie, and Scalloped Potatoes are all similar to things I've made before, so I'm also excited to try some old things in a different easier way.As they often do, included in this are testing results of different machines.Positives:Learning that I actually don't need the dough blade for dough that I've been consideringDifferent techniques and tricks for minimizing clean-up (plastic wrap over the bowl)The tips throughout - some I already knew, some were "a-ha!" moments (processing water with a few drops of soap to clean the bowl? Why didn't I think of this)The recipes! Having tried what seems like a gazillion Test Kitchen recipes and never once having a failure (knock on wood...)...I'm quite confident that my family will looooove the shrimp burgers and even the meatless Black Bean burgers. Bacon Jam? Yes please. Also Celery Root and Potato Roesti sounds divine.It basically expounds on a lot of simple techniques, with some fresh approaches thrown in.The negatives:Some of the processor techniques will be review for any cook who's spent quality time with their processor. I don't really think that's a huge thing...most good cookbooks like to cover the basics like this. Also, if this is your first food processor, this basic info is great!Another small issue I have is that I love a detailed Table of Contents - for a month down the road when I remember a recipe I suddenly want to make, and cannot quite remember where I saw it. It's separated into sections, and the section intro pages each have the recipe list there. A small issue...and one I bump into pretty often. Guess I need to change my expectations in cookbooks. That, or improve my memory...not likely!I have the Cuisinart 14 that they used for all the recipes. It's their top rated machine.
Its a wonderful book, but i wish that they had mentioned the fact that the recipes in it could only be used on the larger food processors that are available on the market, i have not used it yet because of that fact and i am wondering if i should just take a chance and give it a try on my Kitchenaid 9 cup processor, which is the right one for someone who lives alone.
Great book! I was just gifted a 14-cup Cuisinart food processor for my birthday. I love Cook's Illustrated/ATK, so I thought this would be a great resource to have on hand while learning how to use it. And I am happy to report that I was correct. This is a reasonably sized, lightweight volume that is jam-packed with operating tips and great recipes. I have already made three recipes in less than a week, and all of them have been superb. I can't wait to make more, since so many look appealing to me. A quick check revealed that very few of these recipes are available either online or in other Cook's Illustrated/ATK cookbooks. Totally worth the price!
I am actively seeking to learn to cook at a more sophisticated level, so I particularly love this cookbook. Not only is the printing beautiful, so too are the many pictures that accompany each recipe. I particularly liked the format of each recipe which starts with a section entitled "why this recipe works." This is a paragraph or two explaining what the test chefs were trying to accomplish and why they made the decisions they did. This is written in understandable language, not some gourmet speak, and I found it very instructive. Additionally, the basic recipes are accompanied by a couple of decided different variations. This is a very professional cookbook and a great resource for those who have invested in a food processor.
I have learned so much about my food processor, even though I've owned various units since early 80's. While the recipes may be simplistic, I'm using my processor the correct way and it stay out on the counter instead of hiding in the cupboard. Very educational - thanks!
A good read with helpful info even after owing a food processor for over 30 years. Already knew most of the info but will be making a few tweaks in my recipes! EXTREMELY good value! Liked the machine comparison section and what recipes worked in what models.
