Tim, if you're reading this, I have a great idea for you at the end of this review. No sarcasm, no snark.DISCLAIMER: I am a Tim Ferriss apologist. I've listened to almost every episode of his podcast. Own his books. Have been following him since 4 Hour Work Week came out.Tim's podcast has rewired my brain. My life is measurably better because of what I've learned. Literally. I have hereditary cholesterol problems and my forays into a ketogenic lifestyle dropped my particle count from ~1950 to ~1225. There are many other great things that have come as a result of my exposure to Tim's podcast, too many to list here.When he announced TOOLS OF TITANS, I was ecstatic. I pre-ordered this book in September.I'm sad to say that I'm non-plussed, borderline disappointed.On one hand, I love having a "totem" of something that has changed my life so profoundly. To that end, I am happy to own the book.On the other hand, it does not deliver on its promise. This is supposedly a "recipe book" (according to page xvi in the Foreword).It is no such thing.If I want to bake an apple pie, I go to the Table of Contents, I look up apple pie, I turn to that page.You cannot do that in this book.Tim has amazing things to say about meditation. A few guests on his podcast have amazing things to say about meditation (Sam Harris, Naval Ravikant, Kevin Rose, etc.).But there is no central place to which you can turn to find out the collected wisdom of the many guests who have delved into this topic.The same goes for investing. The same goes for particular health hacks.In fact, there's not even one central place in the book that gives a list of the commonalities between the guests. That's a HUGE missed opportunity.THE ADVICE:Make a second edition. Soon. It doesn't even have to add new content. Just tighten this up and make it so that you can read about certain topics in a centralized place. If there are parts that don't fit, maybe have an author section at the back... but, dang.FINAL THOUGHT:Millionaires become millionaires (in part) because they've learned to say "no." They have the discipline to turn down the good, so that they can pursue (and achieve) the great.This book is just too too too much good. It doesn't tell you what is great. It will leave you chasing dozens upon dozens of random tactics and thoughts in a dozen different fields.It might teach the tactics and routines and habits of world-class performers, but there's FAR TOO MUCH here to make it valuable in showing YOU how to achieve those heights. And, if there is ONE person that you could model to become like them in their field... there is FAR TOO LITTLE here to actually help you on your way.
This is the first Tim Ferriss book I've actually read, after listening to Tim Tim Talk Talk for about a year now. As I sit down to write this, I'm finding it quite difficult to express exactly how I feel about the book, and what Ferriss ultimately represents. I found his podcast at a very difficult time in my life, where I was searching for a way out of a seemingly hopeless situation. At about 3 am, I stumbled upon Tim Ferriss. Since then, my life has changed dramatically. The content in this book is incredibly helpful not only in terms of the actual information, but what the information represents. It proves to the reader that those Billionaires, Icons, and legends are just people. They all had difficult child hoods, periods of massive failure, and times where they felt hopeless. They made it from there to the top simply by doing what works, and ignoring what doesn't, day after day after day. If I could, I'd distribute this book to every person on earth. Not because each person needs a chillipad, or exogenous ketones or whatever, but because each person needs to realize that the future is malleable, and daily habits are the paint by which we create our destiny. There are no secrets, or hacks, or tactics reserved for the special elite. It's all right here, in this book. Its simply a matter of applying what will help you, ignoring what won't, and taking advice only from those who have a life you'd like to emulate.So thanks Tim. Please continue with what you're doing. I have a suspicion that in twenty years, there will be a lot of people who will cite this book and podcast as the thing that turned their life around. Be happy about that. It all really does make a difference.
The best thing I can say about Tim Ferriss is that he's introduced me to an incredible group of people that have changed my life. These people are world class performers that look at their skills, the world, and their lives in deeply contemplative, humble, and surprising ways.And that's how you should read this book. Look at it as a phone book of introductions to Titans.In each section, "Healthy", "Wealthy", and "Wise", you'll get questions to ask yourself and a path to head down. You won't necessarily get the full plan, but you'll get the questions and the direction to go.Again, this is not a manual, but a phone book and a map. Use it accordingly to your advantage.
The idea was a good one. Tim has spent thousands of hours interviewing top performers in every category and industry. So sit down and distill the collective wisdom into a book -- seems like a great idea, right?But all in all, it's too superficial -- it's divided up by person, not by topic, so you get 2 pages of distilled wisdom from each performer, but without the full context, the advice loses almost all its power.I imagine this was AMAZING for Tim to write -- he said he took a month off and spent all his time going through all his interview notes and condensing the most important parts from each interview. But Tim met the people, knows their accomplishments, and spent time talking to them. How much of that power is supposed to convey in 2 pages if I don't even know who the expert is?For Tim, this book is probably the ultimate summary and reminder of all the powerful stuff his interviewees have told him. But for readers, it's little more than a disparate mishmash of "I did this for X result and that for Y result" over and over again.
In Tools of Titans, Tim grabbed some of the best of his podcast and moved it into print. But the content is missing real structure and is mixed with silly nonsense that is meant to be funny but misses the mark such as favorite spirit animals and his useless billboard question. There are some golden nuggets in here and they are worth going after, I just had to work a little harder than I wanted. It was worth the price especially after 200+free episodes of the podcast which I enjoy every week.

We read this book in a Spanish book club. Enjoyable, short chapters. It helped to also have the English copy of the book. While the book may be aimed at a younger audience, our book club of older retirees thoroughly enjoyed the characters and stories. The chapters can be read as stand alone stories.
We used this book for an advanced Spanish conversation adult-ed class. The short chapters/vignettes are not overly difficult for non-native speakers to understand and learn from, and are perfect as a basis for class discussion/conversation.I have enjoyed this book a lot. The narrative is in the first person from the perspective of a 12-14 year-old Hispanic girl living in a Chicago barrio. The style and language are wonderful and easy to read. The stories evoke coming-of-age in the 70s, but are timeless.
Great book for struggling EL students or for students learning Spanish.
Purchased for my daughter. A classic for any person interested in reading someone not part of the usual author's assigned in school.
This a beautifully written book which I read ages ago in English and now am enjoying again, reading in Spanish this time. Characters and scenes are colorful, humorous, poignant and poetic.

This book is scary! To read the assembled horrors that organized religion has visited on mankind is terrifying. This book covers all of the major religions, not just the familiar Christian tales of witchcraft and the Inquisition. However, note: it is just an introduction and is written on a pretty basic level. It would make a great junior high school text, except you can't imagine who would teach it.
...I was a little disappointed to receive a rather slim book (234 pages), when Amazon described it as being 661 pages. I was expecting a more scholarly work, but this is a good introduction to the subject. Someone needs to write a more in-depth book on this important topic.

Author James A. Haught wrote in the Introduction to this 1990 book, “Christianity has no monopoly of killing for God. Even before the birth of Christ, the Roman poet Lucretius warned: ‘How many evils have flowed from religion!’ A grim pattern is visible in history: When religion is the ruling force in a society, it produces horror. The stronger the supernatural beliefs, the worse the inhumanity. A culture dominated by intense faith invariably is cruel to people who don’t share the faith---and sometimes to many who do. When religion was all-powerful in Europe, it produced the epic bloodbath of the Crusades, the torture chambers of the inquisition, mass extermination of ‘heretics,’ hundreds of massacres of Jews, and 300 years of witch-burnings… Today, much of the Third World hasn’t broken free from religious horror. In India, Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims repeatedly massacre each other… This book traces the dark and dangerous side of religion through the past nine centuries.†(Pg. 14, 17)He states, “The ultimate murder religion was that of the Aztecs, which demanded about 20,000 victims per year. The chief deity was the sun, which might disappear, priests warned, without daily sustenance of hearts and blood.†(Pg. 32)He notes, “Then, in the 1200s, a storm of heretic-hunting burst upon Europe. The first victims were the Albigenses, or Cathari, centered around Albi, France. They doubted the biblical account of creation, considered Jesus an angel instead of a god, rejected transubstantiation, and demanded strict celibacy… In 1208, Pope Innocent III declared a major crusade to destroy the Albigenses… Another group targeted for extermination were the Waldensians, followers of Peter Waldo of Lyon, lay preachers who sermonized in the streets. The church decreed that only priests could preach, and commanded them to cease… the Albigensian crusade was directed at them as well.†(Pg. 54, 56)He observes, “During the 1400s, the Holy Inquisition shifted its focus toward witchcraft, and the next three centuries witnesses a bizarre orgy of religious delusion. Agents of the church tortured untold thousands of women, and some men, into confessing that they flew through the sky on demonic missions… turned themselves into animals, made themselves invisible, and performed other supernatural evils… The number of victims is estimated widely from 100,000 to 2 million.†(Pg. 73)He recounts, “Corruption in the mediaeval Catholic hierarchy was infamous. Pope John XII openly had love affairs, gave church treasure to a mistress, castrated one opponent, blinded another, and donned armor to lead an army. Benedict IX sold the papacy to a successor for 1,500 pounds of gold. Urban VI tortured and murdered his cardinals. Innocent VIII proudly acknowledged his illegitimate children and loaded them with church riches… Sergius III likewise killed two rivals for the papal throne…. This book really goes into a fair amount of depth and yet it's pretty easy and enjoyable to read. You can tell the author has done his research. I saw him speak on documentaries about the Mafia and became intrigued by the subject.
Good books about the American Mafia are few and far between. Most of the ones I've found seem to be self-serving memoirs by former members and associates of organized crime, written in conjunction with professional ghost-writers. These books are okay, but don't really provide me with what I want: a good, solid, informative history of the American Mob and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to eradicate it.I recently discovered just such a book: "Five Families: The Rise, Decline, and Resurgence of America's Most Powerful Mafia Empires" by Selwyn Raab. Here is a definitive history of the five great crime "families" of New York, written by a former "New York Times" investigative reporter who is also one of the foremost recognized authorities on organized crime in America.In "Five Families," Raab traces the rise and decline of the five most powerful and influential crime borgatas in the United States - so-called "families" named after their most famous bosses: Bonanno, Columbo, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese. These five Cosa Nostra "families" gradually became so powerful that they essentially ruled nearly all of American organized crime from the early 1930s until the 1990s, when their influence was severely diminished by the concerted efforts of local, state, and Federal investigators and prosecutors.These families were initially organized in 1931 by Charles "Lucky" Luciano, who was, at the time, one of the most notorious gangsters in America. Luciano proposed dividing criminal enterprises in New York City into five "families," with a governing "commission" of bosses. Each borgata would be organized into crews led by "caporegimes," or "capos." There was also a body of strict rules by which all members would live.Raab points out that for nearly six decades, The Five Families' criminal enterprises ran practically unchallenged in New York. Their power and influence gradually expanded into Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and other major American cities. A heroic and dogged group of investigators and prosecutors, most notably FBI Special Agent Joseph D. Pistone (of "Donnie Brasco" fame) and U.S. Attorneys Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Chertoff, used provisions of the newly enacted Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act to indict, convict, and sentence to long prison terms many of the Five Families' most powerful and notorious gangsters.I found "Five Families" one of the most fascinating books I've read in a long time. The book is packed with information that's presented in an easy to read and understand manner. Selwyn Raab is obviously a gifted writer whose style drew me in from the book's first paragraph.It's unfortunate that the Kindle version of "Five Families" is of such poor quality that it seriously distracts from Raab's outstanding research and writing skills. Nearly every page of the Kindle version contains serious typographical errors like wrongly italicized words, incorrect punctuation, and even misspelled words. These errors occur frequently enough for me to deduct one star from my otherwise five-star rating. They all should have been eliminated by more careful proof-reading and editing.Despite this serious technical flaw, "Five Families" is an important addition to the literature of organized crime, and should not be missed. Highly recommended.
Selwyn Raab’s book is like a special edition of Darwin’s most famous book. It documents the evolution of America’s five mafia families and does so in a way sure to be appreciated by even avid followers of real and fictionalized mob events and characters.As one such follower I learned more than I thought I knew from Raab’s analyses of the inflection points in each families’ evolution. From the history that predestined each of these points to the prevailing political, social and criminal justice attitudes that defined each inflection, I found myself marveling at how much Coppola, Scorsese and Chase got right (but not perfect) about “The Lifeâ€--and wanting to re-watch their classics through the lens of "Five Families."
Before purchasing "Five Families", I've seen Raab on several cable channels (Biography, History, etc) expounding on the structure and history of the Mob / Cosa Nostra / Mafia. I scooped up the book when I ran across it at Amazon. Wow.... Raab presents a detailed history of the Mafia and its bosses, capos, made-men, associates, buttons, and wannabes. By far the best volume on the Mob I've ever read, and I've read less than 40% of the book. Highly recommend it.
Overall quite good book. Has some details that are irrelevant and does not provide details where needed. Spends too much time in modern mafia trials and doesn’t give us more details about the 50’s and 60’s. Most of the information and history the author writes are already in documentaries that one can watch in YouTube.Overall though good book and I would recommend it
This is the only book you will ever need to learn about the mafia. It is the back story of all the headlines and all those shows about the American mob. I cannot recommend this book more highly.I bought the audio cd version to listen to in my car and the person reading it is fantastic.I grew up in NY during their heyday and cannot believe all this was going on. The NYPD and the FBI was totally incompetent. Especially the FBI. Then came Robert Blakey and his RICO statute. He understood their power structure and as such designed the law they feared most. It took the FBI ten years to use it for the first time! They didn't understand it!This is a fantastic book!
The one book that can truly be said delivers in aces. First the gigantic size, where the pages are not at all boring, instead filled with just about all the gory details of the presence of the Mafia in America, since its inception to the modern days. Truly spectacular, with plenty of glossy pictures that add value to this monumental work, by the extremely talented and able author, Mr. Selwyn Raab. Most of the people that have always been fascinated by the rise, and why not, fall of the American Mafia, owe it to themselves to own this book. Hard to count the many books on the subject that I have read to this date, watched countless movies on the subject as well, and at the end of the day, this book condenses the whole can of anchovies in an epic book. After reading this one, anyone will be able to talk Cosa Nostra like Pacino and De Niro, forget about it. 5 Stars.
