The Doubles is a fascinating look into the duality of the human soul and a fantastic debut novel from author N.S. Winston. There is a darkness to this book that makes the reader question who they are. What really stood out for me is that I never questioned whether I would personally clone myself, but whether or not there was something about myself that I needed to "peel away". Winston presents all sorts of reasons that his characters have chosen to clone themselves, from using it as a way to act out or confront grief to the necessity of needing extra hands around the house. I loved the layers to this novel and the heavy use of metaphors never feel overdone, instead they're thought provoking. Definitely give The Doubles a shot if you're looking for a quick read that will stay with you long after you finish it.

After finding Ms. Poe’s Snow and Winter Series I have been hooked on her writing and 11:59 did not disappoint. We meet Asuka Kawashima plummeting to his death, coming face to face with the devil. They make a deal, Asuka selling his soul for the ability to protect people from the monsters in dreams. Time was 11:59. The deal is now 5 years old and Asuka is tired, his world grey without dreaming. He meets Merrick Grace and finds e might need to rethink this. I loved this story !!!Oh my goodness !!!! Rhys Ford blesses us with and Alice Thru The Looking Glass version Ford style with Xander Spade and Wonderland City. Anyone who has read this authors books knows her great ability to story tell, with descriptions that give you a movie while you are reading and this doesn’t disappoint. We learn Xander is a PI in the City and another child has entered the city….Mayhem and Rhys at her best!!!Last but not least Jordan Castillo Price of Psy Cop and Mnervermind fame ends this anthology with her story Dark Favors, and dark it was. What is the cost of doing and asking someone for a Favor is the final question for us to give thought to. Johnny Lockheart is 17 when his story begins, we switch back and forth in time to get the whole story. It was a great ending to a wonderful anthology.5 Star Reads!!!!
I enjoyed reading this anthology very much. I knew it would be a good one since I have read the works of most of these authors and liked them a lot. The focal point of all the novellas was what happened when you made the deal with the devil. From then the sky was the limit and each story was well-written and fantastic. The characters in all of them were well-developed, some of them could be described as anti heroes but most of them possessed integrity and honor in one way or the other. Each story was unique and quite fascinating considering that they had to have a common denominator. In some instances the devil was portrayed as a positive character in others not so much, and I loved that juxtaposition. All in all it was well worth waiting for but it also proved that ignorance is indeed bliss in some circumstances."You take the blue pill—the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill—you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember: all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more." - Should have taken the blue pill, Neo! But then there wouldn't be a story to tell.

When I’m thinking about it right now, it actually would be fun, if even one of the stories had a more metaphorical meaning, but maybe that’s the... deal with this book. I didn’t know what exactly happened and what not, and the style of writing wasn’t helping. I can sometimes overlook the confusing parts, if something will hook me to the story, but no such thing here. I didn’t finish this, read only a quarter of the story. Shame, since it’s pretty long.3. „Infernal Affairs†by Jordan L. Hawk had a good idea (humorous SPN kind of story) and fun characters, but the cliches at the end killed my enjoyment. „Dark Favors†by Jordan Castillo Price... I was not in the mood for the bittersweet and (really) smutty, but it was still good and pretty original with its exchangeable favors set up.4. The shortest story, „11:59†by C.S. Poe was nice bonus, one which diversifed whole anthology cause of it dreamlike mood.5. Aaand there are my favourites. „Wonderland City†by Rhys Ford - captivating take on the Alice in Wonderland, with such an interesting worldbuilding and adult spin on madness. I only wish the final battle to be shorter. „Counterfeit Viscount†by Ginn Hale was magnificent. Suprising, with good pacing, ressembling early 20th century (I think?) fantasy with societal issues. It would be awesome, if there were sequels to this two stories, not because they were unfinished, but cause I would be very glad to come back to their worlds.6. One thing I learned from this - the only way to unf*ck your sold soul is to do a favor for the devil. It’s in every story. Huh.
Interesting stories. The first one was pretty cute really with guffaw the hellhound. The second one was pretty disturbing but we'll written. The third was okay/. I liked the 4th slot wish it had been longer. The rhys Ford was definitely a different take on Alice in wonderland -pretty creative. Jcp's was good, wish there was more emotion but I liked these short stories alot

At school, he feuds with the young Arthur Darling and falls in love with the forbidden Sultana Ananova. After taking his revenge on Darling and pursuing Ananova, James and his friend Roger join the crew of the Sea Witch, a ragged ship with a cruel captain. When its identity as a slave ship is revealed, James sides with the slaves to earn his own name, Hook. Throughout the story, his dreams of finding a magical Neverland set the stage for his future role in Barrie's classic story. Hart, whose screenwriting credits include the movie Hook, has taken information from Barrie's Peter Pan, including his protagonist's attendance at Eton, his yellow blood, and his unusual appearance, and used it to create a character of his own. James's illegitimate status and its prominence in the story seems to be Hart's own invention, and while it provides ample motivation for James's actions, it takes away from the story's appeal to younger Peter Pan fans, who may also be confused by some aspects of British school life. This is a much darker Pan prequel than Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's Peter and the Starcatchers (Hyperion, 2004). Just what my grandchildren wanted.
I have always loved the villains the best in stories: Long John Silver in Treasure Island; Professor Snape in Harry Potter; Captain Hook in Peter Pan; and the list goes on. Now, after all these years, someone has the clever idea to write a book explaining the who and why and how of Captain Hook! I think it's marvelous! An extraordinary concept that I wish I'd thought of - and been talented enough to have been able to have written such a book! It doesn't take any of the magic away from the original Peter Pan story for me at all (as another reviewer claimed it did for him)! Not one bit. In fact, it simply adds to the Peter Pan fantasy's rich and long-lasting mystique!
THIS IS AN AMAZING BOOK!
And that's coming from an adult! It's a great look at Captain Hook's early life with plenty of shenanigans that you know he'd get into.
I loved this book when I borrowed it from a friend and wanted my own hard back edition. What I got was hardback but looked as if it had been dropped in water and then a weight placed on it so it wouldn't accordion up. The pages don't line up and look worn at the edges. This was supposed to be in good condition. It was in fact terrible condition and I now have to buy a new one so I can "proudly" display it on my book shelf.
I love the first part of the book. I love James's background and his doings in Eton, which gives him so much character. He is unquestionably a true villain, one of a kind, and I had so much high hopes for him. I really enjoyed reading it and cannot stop. I flipped page over page drinking in the amazing characters of James and Jolly. I was originally just curious for Captain Hooks background but got so much more, I was sure this would become one of my favorite book.I was really hoping to see James realizing his ambition, building up his throne, his plans, and his ascend to it. I was also really curious how he became captain, how he lose his hand, what happens to the princess, most importantly what happened to Jolly Roger(seeing that he isn't in the Peter Pan story)??Yet I was quite disappointed. Not only that only one question was answered, but I felt James's characteristic was changed just so he can be some kind of likable protagonist. If it were still the same James in Eton, he wouldn't have flown into rage. If he didn't liked the situation he would've kept his cool and made up a scheme, he might be thwart he might succeed, whatever the outcome he would never wipe the evil grin off his face and would never give up. He wasn't a figure of compassion and justice, he was an emperor of violence, cunning, and revenge.Three stars for the great beginning.
What kind of a childhood results in becoming one of the literary world's greatest villains? According to J.L. Hart's vision of Captain Hook, a childhood of abandonment, isolation, and too much time spent alone reading history books, created a young man motivated by revenge and with an obsession to prove he is superior to everyone else. James Matthew is suspicious when the father he has never known, a powerful lord, sends him to an elite boarding school to finish his education. James knows he will be never fit in, and he arrives angry and determined to destroy anyone who gives him a hard time. The middle of the story drags. There is hazing by upperclassmen towards the newbies, a hugely important sports event that James uses to humiliate his enemies, and a weird love-at-first-sight between James and a beautiful princess visiting from the Middle East. Of course, the romance results in James being expelled from school, and his father sending him to work on one of the family's trading ships heading across the ocean. Captain Hook is a dark story. James Matthew is creepy and violent. He is not a likable protagonist. The crisis and climax of the story are set up to redeem James and show that he a just and compassionate person, but that did not ring true. Why does a desire for justice and compassion show up in James when he is on the ship when there was never a glimmer of either quality while he was at the school? That said, readers who are curious about Captain Hook or fans of adventure stories will probably enjoy Captain Hook. A few may even look forward to the sequel.
