I bought this as a gift for my HB ... who was more FLW books than I can count at this point. (Almost all of them purchased by me over the years for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) We're starting to run out of material! This book is significantly different than those that are focussed purely on the architecture, discussing much more about the materials FLW used and how the design elements affected living spaces. The photographs are beautiful and the text is well written. I'm glad I found this one!

This book is amazing, raw, emotional and real. Trix has been raised, and I use that term loosely, by an alcoholic mother. They have been homeless, lived in motels and her mother has had numerous boyfriends and has prostituted herself out. Trixie has no idea what a normal family is. She finds love in the only way she knows how with boys that only use her. She doesn't know who her father is and wants badly to know what she comes from. She finds out that her father is Mexican and fantasizes about the family she doesn't know. When she finds out she is pregnant she turns her life around with the guidance of an Art teacher who truly cares for her and wants her to know her value. It is heartbreakingly real, beautiful and hopeful. I won't tell you want else happens because I don't want to spoil it for you. It makes it more understandable why it is so hard for kids who come from such a background, not to know any other way than what they learned without help and hope. Anya is a wonderful writer.
Trix has grown up moving from seedy motels to the apartments of her drug-addicted mom's boyfriends, never feeling secure or even loved. At age 14 she decides to take her life into her own hands, moving to her aunt's home.But there's just no escaping the feelings that Trix has lived with for so many years. She craves affection, getting it from the only way she knows...hooking up with random boys. Trix knows her classmates talk about her, call her a slut, but she's unable to stop her behavior.When Trix becomes pregnant, she's initially shocked and horrified. But quickly she begins to think the baby is the best thing that could happen to her. Finally, finally, she won't be alone...she'll have somebody to love her. But what if that isn't the best thing for the baby?Monroe is a talented writer, making Trix both resilient and heartbreakingly naive...just like many people we all know in real life.
OMG, this was the most touching, heartfelt, gut wrenching, heart clenching and emotional story I've read in awhile. I had tears in my eyes through most of this story, my heart breaking for what Beatrix went through. I just could not put this book down, it was that intense.What a gift this Author has putting such emotions on paper and feeling as if you are right there with the character feeling all that emotion.Truly, this book blew me away.A MUST READHIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is by far my favorite from this author! I was able to read this story as an ARC and I seriously read it in one sitting. I love the rawness of the main character, Trixie and the problems she faces in her life. I read for characters and this book has so many complex and yet real characters that you will love sometimes and be yelling at others. But that's what's so real about this. Nobody makes all the right decisions all the time. This story has a special place in my heart and I recommend it to anyone looking for something a little deeper than the regular old beach read.
This book was fantastic. It made me laugh. It made me cry. Trixie goes through some serious life changes and realizes that it doesn't matter where you come from, but the choices in life that make you who you are. A beautify heartwarming and heartbreaking story all in one book. I can't wait to read something else by this author.
First book to read by this author and must say I was hooked from the beginning. This book took me in for a rollercoaster of emotions. Loved how I could put myself in every character's shoes, how real they felt with flaws and all. Recommend this great read.
This story was a very interesting read. You will get engulfed in the story of the protagonist. Wanting her to succeed and win. The realism of the story is very touching. Her strength of character is admirable.The story is well written and an easy read.
This story is about many things I usually have little interest in. Teen pregnancy, realistic dysfunctional families, and teen girls. That being said, I was hooked from the first sample and then proceeded to read the entire book (it’s a short read) in about an hour and a half. It’s a very real book and it doesn’t shy away from issues, even if the ending is much happier than real life tends to be.

My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting this charming and intelligent man in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC. He had just finished a trunk show at Brooks Brothers and we were in DC for work. He shared some of the stories in this book, particularly about Auschwitz, his first job in America, and as 'tailor for the President'. He also showed us his POW tattoo. We were mesmerized. He was not bragging, but sharing things he thought all needed to be told. We have thought of him for years, occasionally checked on the internet to see that he was still alive (and working!) and recently saw him on television news. That's when I learned of this book. What a treasure! It's a pleasant read about a sometimes not too pleasant subject. I highly recommend who share this life experience by reading this book!
Great book. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down anymore until I finished it. I cried, I laughed and I was deeply inspired. a 5-Star recommend!!More detail:This is two books in one. the first part is about the horrors Mrs. Greenfield experienced in Nazi Europe (Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Germany... and how he survived.The second part is a love story to the United States of America, how he was welcomed, how he was able to strive, learn, and ultimate how his hard work and dedication gave him the opportunity to buy his boss' custom tailor factory for $100,000 in the 1960s and become the tailor for the rich, famous and powerful including many Presidents of the US.Being an Immigrant from Germany myself, the only part I was missing is perhaps more details on how visits back to Germany and to the Concentration camps, which are shown in the picture part of the book, but not mentioned in the text, affected him and how he thinks about those countries today. But perhaps there is a chance to ask him this in person some day as he seems to still be in great health. and he certainly accomplished me wanting to have a suit made by his company - so a great sales job too by showing how much work goes into a truly master custom suit.
This was simply first-rate! It could have easily been three separate books: one, on life in a concentration camp and in prewar and postwar Europe; two, on why America is the beacon of freedom to the world; and three, on the ins-and-outs of the fashion industry. I sat down and read it cover to cover in one afternoon. It is exceptionally well-written and poignant ("instead of manna, God dropped munitions") and one would have to be in a coma not to be moved to tears by several moments and passages.So glad you're here Mr. Greenfield.
I couldn't put the book down: very readable, and it kept you asking: "what now? what's next?" An amazing life and story. Each holocaust victim has a profound story, and it's certainly the tragedy of human history, but Mr. Greenfield kept such an optimistic outlook once he got to the States, that anything was possible. He took whatever job he could get and became the absolute best. I wish every American would do the best possible job for every task at hand: this country would be even greater.
This wonderful book should be required reading in every high school. Mr. Greenfield takes you along on his life journey through the horrors of the holocaust to survival in America. I could not put this book down, I cried & laughed, Mr. Greenfield's vivid descriptions made me travel back in time with him. I wish I could more eloquently explain what this book meant to me. Always have faith, work hard, and never give up. Thank you & God Bless You Mr. Greenfield.
This book is an awesome testimony to the power of perseverance when all is bad. The horrors of Nazi Germany as a holocaust victim could have made Martin very bitter. Instead after losing his entire family and with help from distant relatives, Martin came to America and made a life for himself. I highly recommend this book.
Honestly I feel as though I know Mr. Greenfield after just the first few chapters. Extremely well written. I was living the hell with that little boy through those pages. Such shameful suffering. And what a grand turn of events for his future. Kudos to Mr. Greenfield and Mr. Hall.

About the Author
Jonathan Davies read history at Cambridge before a long career in teaching, primarily in Tudor institutions.
