Teenage Rebels: Stories of Successful High School Activists, From the Little Rock 9 to the Class of Tomorrow (Comix Journalism), by Dawson Barrett

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up—Informative and inspiring, this collection of 72 stories from American history demonstrate the impact that teenagers have been able to make when they believe in a cause. Barrett exposes readers to the defiance and activism of adolescents who are often overlooked in history books, from 16-year-old Sybil Ludington's midnight ride warning the countryside of a British attack in 1777 to the 2014 counterdemonstration organized by Wilson High School students (in Washington, DC) in response to a hate group's presence outside their school. The author makes it clear that young people have played an integral role in many American social movements. For the most part, he briefly and effectively describes each example from its roots to its conclusion. However, there are many case studies, such as "The March for Principal Baker," where the resolution is either ambiguous or not included, leaving readers to wonder about the outcome. Other entries don't mention any teenage rebels and instead function as opportunities for the author to grandstand about issues that he considers troublesome, such as "'Abstinence-Only' Education" and "No Child Left Behind." Perhaps the biggest drawback is the lack of photographs. Instead, illustrations in shades of black and gray accompany the text and seem to trivialize the courageous acts. VERDICT Though a bit flawed, this title will attract budding activists and young history buffs.—Audrey Sumser, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Mayfield, OH

Review

"Cuts through the strange separateness, superficiality, and social disconnectedness commonly ascribed to teenagers to the underlying core truth that teens are people who are connected to their world. Every single astonishing story that Dawson relates, from 16 year-old Sybil Ludington’s 1777 ride to alert the militia of a British attack, to the 21st century high school students fighting for gay and transgender rights and the rights of immigrants, illustrate the deep concern of young people about their society, and their willingness to act on that." —Mark Rudd, The Weather Underground“It's nothing new that high school students are left out of the political process. They've even been left out of most histories of student movements, which focus on colleges—although they led many brave battles in the face of fire hoses in Birmingham and rifles in Johannesberg. In this lucid book, Dawson Barrett corrects that omission. Hopefully these stories will inspire a new generation to fight for their future and not settle for the present. Climate change, unemployment, inequality, all these injustices are stealing from the future.” — Tom Hayden, activist and author“As someone who became active in high school--protesting the Vietnam War, fighting for Black Power, demanding more rights for students--I was thrilled with the publication of this work. It reminds the reader of the proud tradition of progressive student activism and that, far from being limited to college students, it has been a phenomenon crossing many age, gender, racial and ethnic boundaries.” —Bill Fletcher, Jr., writer/activist; author of “They're Bankrupting Us” - And Twenty Other Myths about Unions“Unlabeled and under-the-radar, teenagers create their political identities in Dawson Barrett's stories of young people successfully fighting the power. Righteous and inspiring!” —Jennifer Baumgardner, author of Manifesta, Grassroots, and Look Both Ways“The timing of Dawson Barrett’s Teenage Rebels couldn't be better. Now that standardized testing has been abolished, and Congress has diverted $500 billion per year to public education from the defense and homeland security budgets, and from taxes on the prison-industrial complex, we will finally have free, engaging, quality education for all American kids.” —Senator Andy Bichlbaum (D-New Virginia)

Teenage Rebels documents the rebellious acts of youth from the colonial period to the present day in the United States. Each page begins with a new story of a teenager or an event that occurred at a school and sometimes occurred at workplaces. Filled with illustrations, Dawson has provided an excellent account of youth activism that all schoolchildren will enjoy. Even academic historians have something to take away from this.As a book targeted towards schoolchildren, Teenage Rebels succeeds in inspiring students with stories of youth that they can related to; however; it is quite clear that the author has an obvious political agenda. Some of the sections (which are two page) are not even about high school activism, but rather about school policies such as Title IX and No Child Left Behind Act where the author asserts his views about these policies. It is understandable that the author wants schoolchildren to take something away from this by creating a useable past. The subtitle is a bit misleading. Most of the youth in the eighteenth and nineteenth century were not actually “high school students,” or would have identified themselves as teenagers. I don’t think it is enough to say that “young people have always been politically active.” What’s more important is to demonstrate the impact of their activism and the larger meaning to the historical period. Another disappointing aspect is that the vast majority of stories in the book occurred after 1980. There are few passage that discuss the 1960s, and high school students were extremely active during that period according to recent scholarship.Nevertheless, even as a child’s book, scholars in the Ivory Tower can actually find this book to be useful. Scholars could look more into the various stories the author documented. There has been an article written about the Charleston, South Carolina sit-in conducted by high school students, so it’s apparent that many of these stories have richer details if investigated more thoroughly.

My son researched the football touchdown I did as the first female to do so in a male varsity game in High school. We came across this book, and page 114 describes me. I bought three copies and I am glad what I did has been recognized and this book to hand off to my son so he can see a single person makes a difference. I really appreciate that the author mentions how people who are different or abnormal from social norms can often be bullied or harassed. Nothing amazing comes from doing nothing, so we might as well be amazing. Very inspirational and glad to hand this book off.

Teenage Rebels is basically a non-fiction collection of one to two page stories about teens who have changed the world at different points in time. Now, I'm not usually the biggest fan of non-fiction books, however, if all books were as well written and as intriguing as Teenage Rebels was, non-fiction would be my favorite genre rather than my current favorite sci fi. I loved the way that the stories were brief, but informative.Having my own public charity, and being so involved in attempting to change the world, I enjoyed seeing stories of others who had made a difference in the world in which we live. My only problem with the book was that within some of the recollections the author was a bit biased about certain topics, such as one chapter in which he basically favored one style of education over the others. I just didn't appreciate that outlook and the author’s voice, in what was supposed to be a non-biased, non-fiction book.Overall, it was definitely worth reading and I would highly recommend it to any teens who are interested in learning about other people, and specifically people like themselves who are making a difference in their communities and world.Review by Meagan W., Age 12, Columbus Area Mensa

To challenge the above reviewer, I think the author's analytical brevity is intentional so the book can 1) serve as an easily-accessible supporting text for a larger course in which students can get through quickly 2) encourage follow-up research; It's intentionally open-ended. Haven't taught it yest, but I expect my students will find these examples to be a refreshing alternative to stale, fatalistic survey-style history. I also expect students to ask more questions after reading and Barrett chose not to answer for them. Bottom line, there's nothing this accessible out there about everyday acts of protest that puts teenagers in the driver's seat despite literally every major movement in American history being impacted by them.

Loved this book, and found the examples of teenage activists inspiring. In an age when Texas lawmakers are rewriting the textbooks, rewriting history itself, I think it is imperative that teens take responsibility for their education and their communities. They need to be aware of what is happening and use a combined voice to declare that they deserve better. This book gives many examples of teens taking a stand for equality in education, gender, sexual orientation, religion...they deserve to receive truthful and fair information and be allowed to formulate their own opinions. I believe this book shows teens that change is possible, and it is in their reach. The book provides examples of non-violent means of making a teenage voice heard. I only wish I had the financial means to get this into the hands of every incoming freshman.

This book is awesome. When i was coming into my own politics as a teen, most of the books i found were dense and academic. This is kind of book I wish I had gotten my hands when I was in high school. The stories of young kids fighting back throughout history is so inspiring. I can't wait until my nephews get a little older so i can read this to them.

This is THE book for me when it comes to basic recipes for pastry staples like pastry cream, buttercream, lemon curd, caramel, ganache, genoise, dacquoise, chiffon cake. What separates this book are Flo's detailed instructions which are laid out in a very organized and straight forward manner. I used to just follow baking recipes to a t which sometimes led to failure if the author omitted even a slight detail such as how to properly incorporate the pate a bomb, chocolate and whipped cream for a bavarian cream. But with this book I have had success each and every time. And it's all because of Flo's attention to detail. Because of this book I feel much more confident in the kitchen when it comes to baking even when it comes to making the most complicated cakes and entremets. I really feel that it gives you the types of basics one would learn at pastry school for a fraction of the cost, if you are willing to invest the time. I also like that the recipes are not overly sweet - most recipes use less sugar than comparable recipes in other baking books I own. The fact that all measurements are given in weight is another big plus. I know this book is no longer published but if you can get your hands on a used copy, I highly recommend it!

Flo Braker's `The Simple Art of Perfect Baking' is being reissued after serving as a manual to millions of home bakers for almost 20 years as well as a model to emulate by important baking authors such as Gayle and Joe Ortiz of Gayle's Bakery and authors of `The Village Baker's Wife'.It is important to note that while in English, `baking' suggests pastry, cakes, and breads, this book is truly only about what the French call patisserie. It is even more accurately described as primarily a book about cake baking, with approximately a quarter of the book dedicated to pastry. Everything said about the book must be understood to be referring to only torts and tarts. On average, I think books on baking seem to reach a generally higher level of quality than comparable books on savory cooking. One reason is probably that you can't fake it in baking. A small misstep in measurement, equipment, or procedure can lead to something entirely different from what you intended.Of course, Braker makes the humorous, but very sound suggestion to never throw away your mistakes. You never can tell when you may have happened onto the recipe for something very worthwhile to eat. Above all, don't tell your guests that their dessert is the result of a mistake. The baking enthusiast's book buying is also simplified by the presence of a few very highly respected names such as Maida Heatter, Nick Malgieri, Lindsey Shere, and Flo Braker. To this distinguished list, I must add Sherry Yard, author of the great `The Secrets of Baking'. I do not have the pleasure of having read or reviewed books by Maida Heatter or Lindsey Shere, but I am quite familiar with cake and pastry books by Nick Malgieri, Gayle Ortiz, Sherry Yard, and several others. In this company, Flo Braker deserves all the acclamation she has received.Any foodie worth their salt knows that the big distinction between baking and savory cooking is measurement, but few probably know why this is true or are fully aware of the consequences of ignoring precision. Not the least of Braker's accomplishments is to teach you how to be precise, teach you how avoid mistakes in measuring, and impress on you the importance of weighing instead of measuring by volume. The most valuable aspect of this book is it's `modular' approach to recipes. While there are hundreds of different cake recipes, all of these hundreds are presented as distinct variations on two basic types, butter cakes and foam cakes, with sponge cakes further divided into genoise cakes, sponge cakes, angel food cakes, chiffon cake, meringues, and dacquoise. To make this highly effective approach even more agreeable to the amateur, the author does not burden us with a single master recipe for, for example, genoise, followed by a dozen paragraph long variations whose expansion into a full recipe is left to the reader. Every single one of the twenty-three (23) genoise cake recipes are spelled out, including notes on why a brown sugar genoise has different ingredients and is made with a different method than a classic genoise. The `baker's notes' at the end of each recipe are simply not to be overlooked. The modular approach extends beyond the cake baking to the final construction of the cake from layers, fillings, frostings, and decorations. A full third of the book is devoted to each of these subjects individually, in such a way that one can easily mix and match cake, filling, and frosting to create something customized entirely to your personal taste of that of your family or guests. This middle section also contains two important chapters devoted to working with chocolate and sugar. The section on chocolate cannot replace books dedicated to the subject and I think Sherry Yard's discussion of caramel is more illuminating, but these sections are invaluable in supporting the other topics in the book. The chapter on pastry covers all the usual bases: unsweetened short pastry, sweetened short pastry, puff pastry, and cream puff pastry. While this section and the book as a whole does not have a lot of pictures depicting methods, I am really happy to see diagrams illustrating the fraisage technique for pressing butter into pastry dough. I have read many descriptions of the technique and few manage to make sense without an accompanying picture. The details for measuring continue in pastry making, as when the author stresses the importance of a 1/8 inch thickness for a rolled pie crust. The only technique I know which seems to get a less than thorough treatment is blind baking. The technique is used, but little explanation is given for why it is done and under what circumstances it is important to use it, and when it is not necessary. I will point out that the author's preference for fat in basic piecrusts is vegetable shortening. If, like me, you happen to be a butter person, I recommend you consult Sherry Yard's Master Recipe for 3-2-1 pie dough. It seems almost heretical to say this, but it is possible that this book and other teaching books such as those from Rose Levy Beranbaum may simply not be your cup of tea. If you are already a successful, accomplished baker, you may be happier with a book that simply gives lots of different recipes. I make this warning because people have occasionally objected to excellent books because the recipes were too involved or too talky. But, I think a baker who aspires to great pies and cakes should have at least one book like this and all the homey books on regional recipes you can find. Where else are you to find a great recipe for Shoofly pie!Highly recommended cornerstone volume to your pie and cake-baking library.

Want to learn to bake with perfection? This is the cookbookin my humble opinion. Filled with classic and uniquerecipes with expert instruction, I look to this cookbook everytime I start a project in my kitchen, especially Flo's famousDevil's Food Cake!

This is a wonderful book for experienced and inexperienced cake bakers alike! I learn something new from each recipe I try. I especially love her conceptual approach to baking, by explaining the whys and hows of why we would use a scale versus a measuring cup or why you may want to brush your cakes with a flavored syrup, she really opens your eyes to concepts that I've blown off in the past simply because no one had taken the time to explain why this works over that. It's just so insightful and such a good read that I find myself using this book like a reference book, so it's my new Cake Bible.

THE BEST BAKING BOOK! Detailed instructions are so helpful. A new favorite.

I actually bought it as a gift. I could not resist looking through it. I like to keep a very low sugar diet and gluten free; I was tempted!

This book was exactly what I was looking for: a how-to guide that explains the baking process. Flo is very detailed, explaining the techniques in simple terms. The only thing that would make this book better would be color photographs of the techniques she describes.

Great Product.

From I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005: All Barry could see as he clung to the tree was water. The water had washed away his whole neighborhood. He tried hard not to imagine what had happened to his mom and dad and little sister, Cleo. What if they'd all fallen into the water too? What if... Barry was shaking now. Then he heard a new sound, a cracking and groaning. He stared in shock at what was floating in the water. A house. Moving slowly, turning. Its blown-out windows seemed to stare at Barry. The splintered wood looked like teeth in a wide-open mouth. And it was coming right at him.

In this book, I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005, a kid named Barry and his family lived in New Orleans. They heard that a hurricane was coming so they decided they were going to leave town, but then Barry’s sister got sick so they had to go back and wait it out. When they got back, they went to sleep, but when they woke up there was water in their house. They went up to the attic where Barry’s dad stores an ax. He then used the ax to break the roof so they can go on top of the roof. Barry falls of the roof and is separated from his family. Will Barry survive this horrific hurricane? Read this book to find out.Barry is brave and nice, because he was very brave after he fell off the roof, and he did everything he could to try and make it back to his family. He is nice because he helped Abe’s dog even after Abe was being mean to him. The moral of the story is to expect the unexpected, and always be prepared for any situation. This book was good because it kept me interested. They put surprising parts in the book that make you feel many emotions. For example, I felt sad when he was separated from his family, then I felt happy when he helped his enemy’s dog. I would recommend this book because it is very interesting how Barry and his family try to survive this horrific hurricane.Jim6th Grade Student

woah :o!! i'm your biggest fan!!! :D Could you make a book with the name hunter in it i honestly don't care how you do it like a ship or a person preferably please and thank you so much. oh i forgot to say that i am mind blown right now because you have most best ideas on planet earth. I have a suggestion about the challenger rocket exploded for another i survived book and I hope that my suggestion was good and thank you for letting me have the opportunity to say something because other authors make my review least helpful even when it has at least 4 paragraphs. so again thank you for the opportunity to speak. (p.s. this is by a 9 year old who started to read i survived books when i was 3 years old.)

I bought this book for my grandson and we read it together. The story has important themes about family, perseverance, courage, helping each other as well as friendship and tragedy. I heartily recommend this book. Young readers don't know about Hurricane Katrina and this is an important part of our nation's history. The author writes with engaging descriptions and emotion.

This book was purchased as a gift for a 9 year old. He was quite excited to receive it, especially since this story references events during his year of birth. The larger series is also popular with his friends, and they share comments about which books they like the best. These books are well written to hold the attention of youngsters, so I am very pleased.

I read this book to my first grader as a way to talk about the 2017 hurricanes. She enjoyed the book and learned some new vocabulary words.

Ten-year-old boy absolutely loved this harrowing tale about Hurricane Katrina. He didn't want to put the book down. He gave the 5-star rating.

The "I Survived" series of books have been a huge hit with my Grandkids. Both my grandson 8 and my granddaughter 12 love them. Informative, exciting, educational and well written. Lot's of action, heart and adventure. What more can you ask for. My grandson does not like to read but he will read these and Diary of a Wimpy Kid over and over again. My granddaughter loves to read and will re-read this series as well as the "Cementary Road " series by Kate Klise. Both get an A+ from me.Enjoy
