I can relate to this mother's struggle with her son's illness and her fight to find appropriate care for him on many levels. I have worked in two different mental health facilities and have seen this drama played out over and over again in families desperate to find help for loved ones. I also have a son who has battled mental illness, diagnosed at age 19. There are many stories out there but this one offers true hope and resources for anyone desiring to take advantage of the hard work the author has already done. Since reading this book I have approached my grown son about doing the genetic testing in hopes of improving his life. I can so appreciate the "tightrope" she had to walk for so long and I am very moved and touched by her story and the family's willingness to share in hopes of helping others. I think this is amazing science and nothing short of miraculous that she, in her tenacity, was able to find it, apply it, and share with others. I think every psychiatrist in the nation should pick this book up and start looking in the direction of treating disease on the cellular level. Thank you, Diane Borders, from a grateful mom.

Every family that has had a mentally ill family member needs to work toward advocating with their legislative representative so this information can multiply hope and healing. This is a fast and painful read if Schizophrenia has touched your life.All the Amazon reviews of this book are excellent. Don't have much new to add except, I hope the reader comesaway remembering the drug Clozapine and The belief that psychotic episodes are physically damaging to the brain.Something that has helped ground me in helping my son is the post Vietnam War era PTSD knowledge and research.The last part of the book dealing with genetics and supplementation, I have no knowledge of. I would strongly urge the drug company's to focus on cheaper anti-psychotic injectables. The future is bright. Thanks Diane !

I could relate to this story from the vantage point of working with the chronically mentally ill and the ongoing challenge and frustration with our system to provide adequate care. I recommend this to all who work with these families and clients. I am just learning about the methylation process and this confirmed what I have begun to learn. I highly recommend this book.

This book is essential if you plan to do serious research on Cuba. It is essentially a compilation of the major documents of great importance written in or on Cuba. It starts with colonial writings (passages from Spanish colonizers) and works its way through time up to and through the Cuban revolution. It contains everything from speeches to journal entries and songs. It is incredibly comprehensive and the summaries at the beginning of each passage are instrumental in guiding the researcher through so much material quickly.
This is not a normal history but if you are willing to read an anthology rather than a normal guide, this will give you an excellent description of Cuban life and history. I have read the Peru reader as well and this whole series is excellent. The book is very long and inevitably some things were left out but overall I found this to be extremely thorough. I was disappointed that some of the poems did not have side by side Spanish and English translations but that is a minor quibble. This book includes plenty of Cuban and non-Cuban sources.
This was a great overview of the history, culture and politics of Cuba. A huge volume, it contains a handful of pages from a wide variety of articles and sources on each topic -- allowing readers to choose what they want to focus on and what they can pass by. It was a great companion on a recent trip to Cuba and made the trip much more interesting as I felt grounded a bit in the history, without having to read dozens of books.

It will make you fall in love with the people and their culture.

About the Author
Robert Kondo was born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles.
