Love the book I'm a fan of Hurricanes

This book had a great deal of promise as a valuable research tool for hurricanes. Unfortunately, it is so full of typographic errors, grammatical faux pas, and incorrect information that it becomes a dangerous book to have been published. It looks like this book published by "Facts on File" is full of facts unchecked.Meteorologically, and common sense-wise, this work fails in almost every conceivable way. It talks about storms that never existed (i.e. Larry of 1984 (an error from page 212)...the name is on that 1985 season's list and has never been used). Elena was ascribed the year 1965, even though storms of that name existed in 1979 and 1985 (error on page 105, yet correct on page 109). Time travel is realized by the storm incorrectly dated as October 29, 1893 which destroys a Lightship two months prior to its inception (page 242 error)! A Louisiana tropical storm from June 1912 is incorrectly dated as 1812 (error on page 216). And the errors go on and on.If they had run the book through a simple spell/grammar check, it would have been much better. Some errors even an elementary school student wouldn't make. Take for example a passage from page 50 (extra comma):...the hurricane dropped 7 inches of rain on the state's, southwest portion, spawning flash floods...After talking in one paragraph about three 1860 hurricanes that struck Louisiana, this line follows (page 215):A similar series of triple strikes was further witnessed in 1860 when three large hurricanes came ashore Louisiana between August 11 and October 3.It is stunning that this book even went to print.Despite excessive errors, there is some good information in this book. However, only people with significant knowledge about weather and hurricanes would be able to separate the facts from the faults. Maybe when an editor takes hold of this book, it will be of more value

It doesn't take an extensive search to see this encyclopedia is crafted as it should have been. We find articles here on historic storms, hot spot locations, hurricane dynamics and tracking technology. Longshore made sure not to leave anything out. Cyclone enthusiasts must be sure to keep a copy on the shelf. While text entries are often extensive, though, I found myself wanting a little more at many points. Too often the articles ended abruptly without the reader having a full sense of the subject's importance. This is not a major flaw but could have been avoided by a better writer. The book also misses a five star rating for errors. I was not as bothered by them as others, but that's probably because I subconciously skipped over them. Needles to say, an Encyclopedia must be accurate and well edited. Perhaps the mistakes have been corrected in the latest editions.

David Longshore's Encyclopedia of Hurricanes, Typhoons and Cyclones is an ambitious undertaking, impressive in its intent and scope. I was excited to pick up a copy for my library, but unfortunately, the more I read the more my excitement mingled with dissapointment. On the positive side, the work is fairly well organized and presented, and does make a handy quick reference guide. Unfortunately, it is also subject to a weakness common to encyclopedias of all types: it contains numerous errors, large and small. Several of the track charts presented for particular notable hurricanes are inaccurate to varying degrees. There are some errors in statistics, dates and the various minutiae associated with individual storm histories. More importantly, there are also places where Longshore's discussions of meteorology and other scientific material related to the subject are in error, or at least subject to serious debate. While most of these faults are minor in the larger context, a few are not, and when taken together they lessen the usefulness of the work. In addition to the errors, Longshore has an unfortunate tendency to engage in turgid prose and hyperbole; extreme adjectives and adverbs fly in great profusion about every storm and every aspect of every disaster. The net affect is the same as over-spicing the soup or adding too much sugar to the tea -- at best, one loses the flavor of the subject; at worst, the product can, at times, become almost indigestible. Personally, I am hoping that Checkmark Books and Mr. Longshore have opportunity to revise this work in the future, eliminating the mistakes, balancing the writing and tightening the reins on purple prose. Such efforts would greatly strengthen the merits of this work. Despite its faults, I would still recommend the Encyclopedia of Hurricanes, Typhoons and Cyclones to anyone with a general interest in the subject. However, for those whose professional interests or responsibilities involve this topic, I would have to recommend that they rely on other materials for their research and reference libraries.

Generally its a nice book. It contains the names of individual storms, even if there are many of the same name. The are infos about satellites and the storm hunters. You can read about evacuations and military operations as well as all topics connected to hurricane weather like extratropical cyclones, clouds and the eye. There are describtions of areas affect by cyclons and short of hurricane chronicle of each of them (Florida, Taivan, Virgin Islands, New York and so one). What is missing is more photos of hurricane's destructive power. And, as most of publications,it ommits many of the Pacific typhoons. Book, being still convinced that most cyclonic disasters happens to be around the USA, locks the infos about most of typhoons even during the chronicle of storm attacks included in the apendix at the end.

I'm torn on this book, because it's funny and some of the remarks are dead on. But all they are really are the opinions of the author, who obviously feels like he's an authority on the correct way to live your life. And he's correct on a solid half of it, while the rest of it just feels like a reach and somewhat scathing. What it really amounts to is 400 single sentence bullet points about things to do and not do, which doesn't feel like enough for a book to be entirely honest. I thought this was going to be more in depth than random, thrown together lines, and I was a little bummed that it turned out to be just that.

Great book

It's a fun little book to pick up and flip through from time to time. You never know what the heck you are going to learn haha.

Chris Black is the man! Very funny and witty observations. Not to be missed.

there are few people as effortlessly cool as Chris Black. I actually apply the learnings to my ever day life and it's made me seriously zen.

Please translate this into 40 more languages

Honestly laughed out loud several times.

One of the worst books I've ever read. Unnecessary opinions that amount to nothing really

I was really intrigued by the premise of this graphic memoir, and ordered it on the day it came out. It definitely didn't disappoint.Honor Girl, by Maggie Thrash, is the true story of a summer she spent at camp when she was fifteen. During this particular summer, she meets a female counselor and begins to have feelings for her. This is the first time she's had any feelings for a girl, and since Maggie's a camper, they have to be careful in their interactions. The result is a beautiful coming of age story about first love, the way you see the world at fifteen, summertime, friendship, and self discovery.I found the story very realistic and moving, and you could definitely tell it was a memoir. The way the girls acted, spoke and felt was very relatable and very real to those feelings you have as a teenager. There were a lot of fun moments too, several of which had me laughing out loud. It was a perfect balance with the angst and serious undertone. Once I started reading, this was pretty much all I could think about until I finished. It's one of those very immersive stories, where you really feel like you are outdoors at summer camp with the other girls. This is a book I would definitely love to reread every summer. The artwork was also beautiful. I love the cover of the book, and true to it, the colors inside don't disappoint. They look like watercolors, and there were several pages I flipped back to look at when I was done reading, particularly the full page illustrations and nighttime scenes. The people were a little sketchy styled for my taste, just because it was harder to read emotion in their facial expressions, but it didn't detract from the story at all.Overall, I definitely give this a 5/5 stars. It's a perfect summer read, and perfect for fans of contemperary graphic novels. Think along the lines of This One Summer. If you've ever questioned who you were, or struggled to figure out who you want to be, you will love this story.

I love graphic novels, especially memoirs, so this was almost guaranteed to be enjoyable. Maggie Thrash is new to me but I will be eagerly awaiting anything more from her in the future! Her artwork is brilliant and the storytelling was fantastic, actually making a serene all girl camp seem exciting. The 2000 era was post-collegiate for me and I've gotta say, the pop culture references here had me cracking up and thanking my lucky stars I went through my awkward teenage years during the early 1990s instead. This book in hardcover is very large and thick and lovely. I recommend this purchase wholeheartedly, and it's rare for me to spring for full price on a graphic novel (just sayin').

I don't know what I was expecting when I bought this. I was a bit skeptical of the art, which looked overly simplistic, and the story had the potential to be overwrought or preachy. I couldn't have been more wrong. First, the writing (plot, pacing and prose) is absolutely perfect. This book couldn't be more true-to-life, more touching or more engaging. You don't just feel like you are reading "about" Maggie --- the story is so engaging that you feel like you "are" Maggie. You feel what she feels and it takes you straight back to adolescence, whether you are male or female, gay or straight. The story is so engaging that you really yearn for resolution and a happy ending. Without wanting to say too much, the ending was perfect. Frustrating in some ways, but it packed an emotional punch that stays with you long after the book is over. (Which, by the way, is all too soon. I devoured this in a single sitting.) As a side note, it was refreshing and heart-warming to see how supportive Maggie's friends were, even in a setting that you would expect to promote the opposite reaction. As the father of two daughters, I have seen the opposite all too often, and I can only hope that they grow up to have friends like Maggie's.Second, the art is really perfect. It reinforces the feeling of "camp". You feel like it was drawn by 15 year-old Maggie (although a closer look reveals subtlety you would not expect of a 15 year-old), so it seems authentic and not artificial. In particular, the colors in the book are warm, soft and imbue the scenes with a glow that heightens the emotional reaction to the book.I only wish this weren't Maggie Thrash's first book. I would order anything else she has written on the spot if I could...Highly recommended!!!

I'm not gay, but I do like to read and watch any book or film that sounds interesting. I bought this as a gamble and fell in love with the main character. She didn't set out to but falls in love with her female counselor. Touching, funny, sad, wonderful slice of life that I think most people can relate to when they fall in love for the first time. Highly recommended for everyone!

I really enjoyed this book. It was funny and honest. I'll definitely read more books by Maggie thrash.

Honor Girl was such a pleasant surprise. Even though I'm of an older generation than the author, I can certainly relate to those intense feelings of a first love and the angst of youth. I went to an all-girls school and remember well how we interacted - for good or ill. This book captures that as well. It was a pleasure to read, and I will be looking for more books by the talented up-and-coming Ms. Thrash. PS: The art work looks like a 15 year old drew it so it fits the book perfectly.

Awesome story and super prevalent. Also the book itself is gorgeous.

This is a great graphic novel by a great author!
