I made it just over 20% through this book. The premise is interesting -- the lead-in statistics quite gripping -- a middle-age person today has even odds of living to 95 -- we truly do not think in this mindset.But what the authors *do* with it will not surprise anyone who is smart. They spent many pages going down the basics of compounding interest and retirement. If you're the type who needs to have this worked out for you, you may enjoy this book. Compounding interest is fundamental to how I see the world, and this section was a huge bore.The authors then proceeded to talk about planning a life for a century. What they said would surprise no one who reads the news. They talk about the disappearance of factory labor, population inversion and pensions, the growth of service industry, etc. The basic groupthink of today. They project out into the next 10 or so years using, again, the groupthink of the day. Nothing was really surprising or interesting here. So I stopped reading it.I always read reviews with an eye of how a smart/educated person may like a book, I was genuinely mislead by the reviews I read thinking that I would get something new/interesting from this book. But I didn't. I hope my review will help some folks. I do think many people will enjoy this book, but not people like me.
This is an exciting book packed with new ideas. Much of it is speculative, but the authors are upfront about the various assumptions they make.It is not a scholarly work, nor is it properly "self-help," but it has given me plenty to consider, and to discuss with my cohort and the younger members of my family. Not every chapter will be of interest to every reader, and if you've sat on a pension board or are an actuary several of the explanatory portions can be skipped, but for most readers most of it will be thought-provoking indeed. And relevant to many aspects of their lives.
I am 88 years oldand for many years long ago in my younger days I half jokingly said I wanted to live to be 120 years old if I could remain sound of mind. Now according to your article perhaps witha little bit of luck Ijust may be able to achieve my goa!. I am a reader with about 4 or 5 kindles which I keep charged up at all times. I rarely watch TV, getting my news about politics. national and international news on my kindle. There are lots of things I will willingly give up but not one on of my kindles. This is a weird book. It felt like one of those classes in college you get very excited but in reality turns out to be boring, yet occasionally their is a spark of wisdom to get you out of the slumber and make you push reader further.One of the majors issues with the book is that the authors try to present an economic model full of assumptions. The model works well for the book but given the macro nature of the topic, readers might feel put off.Also, as other have pointed out here, the authors are a bit too optimistic on the quality of life people over 70 enjoy/will enjoy.Nevertheless, the book has some valuable advice for young and old.Really enjoyed the Assets model analysis and the end of the education-work-retirement model pieces.

When I began playing the harmonica about a month ago I purchased numerous instruction books along with taking lessons on line. I found this publication, "Instant Harmonica" by Patrick Byrne, to be very helpful. It covered the subject matter in a simple and straight forward manner. It began by explaining that the harmonica is a real musical instrument and gave tips on keeping your harmonica clean. It went on to show how to hold and harmonica, breathing and how to read harmonica music. The importance of tones and rhythm were also covered in this text.As a beginner playing the harmonica it is important for the practice songs to also have the words. This guide had the song notes, tabs and words, which made it easy to learn some of the common beginners songs. Some of these included: Oh! Susanna, Kumbaya, Amazing Grace, which is one of my favorites, Camp town Races, Frankie and Johnny, On Top of Old Smoky, Blow the man down, Home on the range and numerous other song tabs. Unlike a couple of harmonica song and instruction publications I purchased, this one covered the topic without getting bogged down in too many technical details. The important thing emphasized is to practice, practice, practice with your harmonica, which I have been doing every day.For anyone who is considering learning to play the harmonica, this guide along with some formal instruction is an excellent combination. Personally, I loved this 96 page manual and still practice most of the songs I learned reading and studying this guide.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Got this and the Swan (Chinese) Harmonica for a bday gift. The Harmonica is lousy so we returned that for a Suzuki Folk master. The book is great and lots of good songs in it. The gift was very well received.

It's a good primer - I got this for my son and I. I've been playing for 30 years but I wanted a copy of the same book so I got 2 - he can tell me what page he's on, problems, etc...It's good instruction - makes it easy. But the song selection is sorta dated. lol. I'm 46 and I barely have heard a lot of these. It would be better if it had more campfire classics and modern songs / riffs to keep the next generation interested.
This book is excellent, I was playing tunes shortly after I received the book, they were beginner tunes but still I made clear music from my Harmonica Very satisfied with this beginners instruction book.
Definitely helps in learning the Harmonica...takes much practice though as does any music instrument you learn. Satisfied with this book.
This book won't rust, bust, or fall apart, I hope. All seriousness aside, my dogs did try to sing with me, and they still do. My whole family is using the book to learn the harmonica, even though I play as softly as I can, the dogs still try to sing with me. My daughter says that I'm hurting their ears. I don't think so.
