I chose this rating because I love The Clue of the Broken Blade. I listened to it on talking book and it was awesome. I like the fact that Frank and Joe get to be stuntmen for a movie. I don't know who I would recommend this product to.

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). I took away the one star because I still absolutely hate statistics. But on that note, if you're forced to take a statistics class pray (if that's your thing) that your teacher puts this book on the curriculum! It's easy to read, helpful, and way better than the text for my undergrad stats class. If I'm going to have a stats book, I'm very content with it being this one.
The author goes through how to compute in Excel which is helpful. What I find lacking is a clear and concise definition of the terms in some cases. I’d also like to have a few more examples with visuals for discussion to help me grasp the concepts - for example, I looked up the simple definition of t-test, WHY would you compare two means of variable populations? What does that tell me about my data? Just as important to how to do something is why you’re doing it. I also don’t care for the distracting remarks meant to lighten the tone and make people more comfortable. I like to be funny in most cases, but it’s a little distracting here at times.
I DO hate stats, but this book actually is making my statistics class bearable. I'm not numerically inclined AT ALL and was terrified I wouldn't be able to get the concepts down enough for my major, but it's proven to be a good companion to my professor's lectures. I got the kindle version and I'm quite happy with it.
I can not say it will make anyone like statistics but it is better than the usual statistic textbook, for sure. It gives many other examples of why statistics are important, beyond the usual behavioral science explanations, which is cool, plus, the author totally gets that most taking statistics, are forced to take it, therefore caters to those that fit in that category and really attempts to make one‘s statistics class, not suck, as much :)
This book explains statistics in simple language so that anyone can understand. This is not the case for most stats books! I have taken several 500 and 600 level statistics courses, and I still go back to this book occasionally to review something or read how to explain it to someone else. I recommend this book to everyone I know taking statistics
Great book for the statistically challenged. Emphasizes the how's and why's opposed to just assigning a bunch of numbers to crunch. The only negative comment I have is related to the lack of alternate technology explained. IBM's SPSS is the only technology for which solving the equations is given. SPSS works great, but is expensive and complicated to learn, and was not required for my class. Other technology is available such as graphing calculators and MS Excel. If the book covered their use as well, I would give it 10 stars(if possible).
Easy to read, loved the interactive videos, practice with SPSS, links to research. I would have given it 5 stars but some of the answer keys did not explain well enough. There were also several correction pages that needed to be accounted for-I didn't like that. However, the author, Neil Salkind seems like a person who would make a nice neighbor or friend-funny guy!
As a college student renting textbooks has been the go-to method for my classes. I have been in college for 3 years already and have had my number of textbook rentals. I know not to expect a new textbook but the quality of the textbook I received was unacceptable. It is literally embarrassing to take this textbook to class it has mold specs, coffee/water-marks, and looks like a dog chewed the corner. It is not like I have the option to return either because I am already a month into the semester and cannot afford to be without a textbook for whatever shipping period time it will take. Thanks a lot for the mold health hazard!!!! I literally have to be careful where I place my fingers to turn the page. I do not understand how people do not have common sense judgement to realize if a book has mold specs, it probably shouldn't be distributed as a rental to college students. Yes, the letters/words on the pages are legible but the mold and chewed corners are disgusting.
Such a good foray into statistics, it explains so much information so well and you don't feel treated like a child, rather you are treated like a human being who has logical and sometimes silly thoughts. This book should be every professors/teachers first book for any students that are starting statistics. This makes sure that people aren't scared of statistics but excited about all the possibilities of it.

Comments on some of the reviews mention that this is not the definitive book written on the Columbine massacre which took place ten years ago on Monday, April 20th. However, I feel author Dave Cullen has done a thorough job in researching this tragedy over the past ten years. The book does not take events in a chronological order, but I did not find this to be distracting. The only complaint I have is that the book has no photographs. It has taken a number of years to dispel some of the myths that initially took hold from the media such as certain groups of students such as jocks and bullies being targeted. Also, the much-heralded story of "The Girl Who Said Yes." The girl who was first credited with declaring her faith in God never got a chance to speak, whereas another girl who had been splattered with buckshot when the girl next to her was killed prayed, "Oh my God, oh my God, don't let me die." Dylon Klebold asked her, "God? Do you believe in God?" After thinking maybe she should keep her mouth shut she replied, "Yes. I believe in God." "Why," she was asked. "Because I believe. And my parents brought me up that way." Dylan reloaded his gun, but was distracted by something and he walked away. Through no fault of her own the girl who died got credit for what another girl said.The book includes an examination of the personality of both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold through qualified medical specialists. Harris, the leader of the two, fits the label of a pychopath or sociopath who views others with contempt and shows no remorse towards another human. Klebold is more of the follower of the two, and was very unhappy and insecure with his life. Both Harris and Klebold planned this over a two year period, but had assumed they would be shot by police officers. They quickly became bored with their shootings, and could have wiped out several others. Instead they realized if they were to die they had to do it themselves. This was not the way they planned to go out. The aftereffects on students, parents, and faculty members of those involved is dealt with in detail. This book is very well researched, and a difficult book to put down.
As a community college prof, I am always deeply affected by school shootings. At the beginning of each semester, I examine my classrooms to determine the answer to "What if . . .? How can I protect my students if . . ." I'm also interested in learning if there's anything I can do to spot people like Dylan who is in deep pain and at risk.I was very impressed by this study. Dave Cullen does everything possible to objectively relate the actions, reactions, feelings, and attitudes of all parties involved. By presenting a balanced report of evidence and the opinions of those involved as well as experts in the field, Cullen unfolds a picture of a complex situation that is not what most Americans believe.As I read, I realized that with the possible exception of Eric Harris, all we have is victims. Dylan himself was a victim of depression and of Eric's manipulation. From even the brief excerpts from the boys' journals included, it becomes clear that Dylan wasn't a boy who wanted to hurt anyone. Without Eric, this massacre wouldn't have happened. The parents of these two boys certainly are not to blame. Yes, in the beginning, Mr. Harris was a little defensive about Eric, but once Eric was arrested, he immediately began researching how to help his son, whom he recognized was suffering from a psych problem.Even Eric was actually a victim. As this book so clearly explains, he had a mental illness that evidence is now indicating is tied to physical causes. He didn't choose to be what he was.The epilogue to this book really impressed me. Although it is very moving in many ways, the study itself is not an emotional account. It's not cold by any means, but Cullen successfully adopts a tone of objective observer, which increases the credibility of his study. It's in the epilogue that we learn about Cullen's emotional reaction to the events. This study was difficult for him, as it was for everyone involved in the tragedy. We all owe him for sticking with this story for more than 10 years and setting straight perceptions based on very early accounts, which are almost always in error.If you are looking for a thorough, well-researched, documented study of this tragedy that is presented objectively yet makes you feel like you are a witness and a friend of those involved, you'll like this book a great deal.
If you want straightforward, factual information on the murders at Columbine High School, this is the book you want to read. It presents the facts and debunks many of the myths, but it also explains where the myths and misconceptions originated from. A lot of reviewers of this book disliked the way Cullen told the story by going back and forth between the day of the killings and the events leading up to April 20, 1999, but I thought it was a unique way to present the information. A lot of books written about events such as this tend to lead with all the background information and it can cause the reader to get bored. By weaving the background within the story of the killings, it kept me engaged in the story. This book also tackled the Cassie Bernall/Valeen Schnurr mix-up in a way that clarifies what happened without degrading Cassie Bernall, her family or those who still consider Cassie Bernall a martyr. This book also devotes a lot of effort into understanding the thought processes of both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Many other accounts I've read simply label Harris as a psychopath and Klebold as a "follower" or "sidekick" This book has more insight on Harris and Klebold than any other account I've read. It also explores the law enforcement cover-up of their knowledge about Eric Harris's bomb experimentation and his history of violent threats. A must-read for anyone looking to know the truth about what happened and to understand what can be done to prevent these attacks in the future.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how Tolkien's personal faith influenced his writing. The writer makes a compelling and, in the end, convincing argument that LOTR is a fundamentally Christian/Catholic work about a loving God working to save humanity in a pre-Christian world. The author makes good use both of hints in the text of LOTR and The Hobbit themselves as well as of Tolkien's letters to make her points. The book is also generally well-written and shows a reasonably good understanding of Tolkien's world.Other reviewers have pointed out, however, some of the "factual" inaccuracies in this book. I, too, found them distracting and felt that they detracted from the weight of the author's arguments, but not to a serious, much less fatal, degree.There were some things that the author did that actually did take away significantly from my enjoyment of the book and from my appreciation for the underlying arguments. First, the author reuses the same biblical quotes on several occasions when a simple reference to the earlier quote would suffice. Attentive readers don't need to get hit in the head with the same text over and over. Second, the author makes repeated negative references to post 9/11 United States foreign policy. Analysis of these issues is not only beyond the author's apparent expertise, but also beyond the scope of the book and would be better left for her own sermons or for cocktail party discussion rather than as part of her literary/religious discussion. Third, there is a fair amount of repetition, particularly in the author's explanation of certain themes in Tolkien and in the Bible. She should explain these well, once, and then simply refer back to her earlier discussion.Having mentioned these criticisms, there are some small but important things that the author does well (other than the previously-praised elucidation of her primary argument). One of the most important is that she does not treat Tolkien and his work as being unimpeachable monuments of English Literature. I smiled appreciatively when she mentioned Tolkien's verse is not his best writing and when she hinted that some of his descriptions of plant life might have run on a bit longer than many readers might have wished. She also does not suffer from the conceit of many literary critics that they know and understand exactly why the author did everything the author did and that they have a theory that explains perfectly every word of the work under discussion. For example, she admits that Tom Bombadil is something of a mystery and that he may not fit very well into her theory of the work as a whole.So, overall, I do recommend this book. Anyone who has spent a lot of time with LOTR will learn something interesting and enlightening about this work and will gain greater insight into what Tolkien was trying to teach us. That, in itself, justifies the price of its purchase and the time spent reading it.
Fleming Rutledge is arguably the ideal critic of The Lord of the Rings. An ardent student of English literature, an orthodox (Episcopal/Anglican) priest, and a gifted writer, she brings to bear impressive resources in analyzing an often- or over-analyzed work. In doing so, she builds an impressive case in support of a seldom-heard conclusion: Tolkien's masterpiece is a masterpiece not only of storytelling, but also of theology and, perhaps, evangelism.In making this case, Rutledge relies not only on her careful reading of the text (including its prequel, The Hobbit), but also on Tolkien's letters (as indicated by extensive and informative footnoting). In particular, she challenges commonly held ideas about the epic, including but not limited to the following: (1) it is a tale of pure good versus absolute evil; (2) it occurs in another world; and (3) it lacks a divine presence. Other repeated topics include rational inferences as to how Tolkien would feel about modern cultures and wars and Rutledge's juxtaposition of the text and Peter Jackson's film trilogy.Rutledge's writing is clear and often striking. That said, the book is slightly more repetitive (and thus longer) than it needs to be, and on occasion, it feels like Rutledge is reaching for an appropriate Biblical verse or analogy. Nevertheless, this is a serious, thorough, and important study of the epic--structured not thematically but parallel to the narrative--that future students and critics cannot afford to ignore. And as for Christians who enjoy fantasy literature, this is essentially a collection of essays and sermons focusing on one of fantasy's great works. (For this latter group, this would be an ideal birthday or Christmas gift.) Highly recommended for either group. 4-1/2 gleaming elven jewels.
Not only is this the single best work on Tolkien that I have ever read. This is also a supremely well written book. Rutledge captures the imagination with a firm grounding in both LOR and Scripture.
Readable, scholarly, and plainly written by a true Tolkien fan. I used this over and over as a resource when teaching a Sunday school class on the underlying themes in LOTR.
This is an excellent book for those interested in understanding Tolkien's assertion that his work was fundamentally Catholic; I am not a biblical scholar, so I was very interested in the parallels the author was able to draw between biblical themes and imagery and those in LOTR.However, the effect of the book for me was marred by factual errors in referencing LOTR. [Ex.: she quotes the fact of Merry's sword being the work of Westernesse, then proceeds to talk about it as if it were made by elves in Gondolin!] There are similar errors throughout -- not a whole lot, but enough to mar the impact of the whole.Additionally, Rutledge cannot resist doing what she quotes Tolkien as specifically decrying: making direct analogies between a current political situation and the LOTR narrative -- in a one-sided fashion. Again, she did not do this often (and admittedly kept those comments to the footnotes most of the time), but the one-sidedness of the judgement detracted from the impact of her overall thesis.Worth reading for those interested in seeing the biblical roots of Tolkien's philosophy.
