I just started learning German. Literally just started, so I can honestly write this review from a completely beginners veiw of it. My native tongue is English, and I know a lot of Spanish. But I have always loved German culture, and that's where my family originally came from, so I decided to learn the language.This book wasn't really the best choice though. The layout is good. And everything seems to be presented in an easy to understand order. But the CD is really lacking. I have almost no background in German speaking so I don't really know the sounds. I need a lot of work on my pronunciation. And this book just doesn't cut it. The cd has short little smatterings of words. But nothing big and useful.Here's a prime example, on page 19 and 20 you are given a table to practice your German pronunciation..and it's not on the CD! How in the world am I supposed to make sure I'm saying it right when I can't hear it? Pretty frustrating. In hindsight I probably wouldn't have gotten this book. It's not enough for me personally, so I'm going to keep on looking for something more intensive.
I bought this book to freshen up my German skills, after nearly 8 years of not using the language at all. Before that I took German classes in high school for 3 years at a rate of 3 hours/week.This book is actually pretty good if you are looking to actually understand the German language. It isn't just a "useful phrases" book for tourists but it goes in depth about each topic it mentions. If you're a complete beginner, I highly recommend this book and if you're an intermediate learner, this book can be a good source to skim through quickly.Pros:- The chapters are ordered logically- The theory is concise and well explained, in fairly simple terms- The chapters can be read chronologically, but as there are very few references to older chapters, you can freely read whichever chapter you want toCons:- The first 3 chapters are a bit of a bore and don't teach you much- The phonetic writing is horrible, the writer probably chose to do it this way to find sounds that are somewhat similar to words in the English language, but if you actually practice it this way, you'll just speak German with a thick English accent.- The exercises are rather limited, I don't believe beginners will be able to properly learn and understand the cases with such a limited set of exercises about the subject- It often feels like the vocabulary is just thrown in there, because they had to put in some words here in there, if you're looking to learn a lot of words, this probably isn't the right book for youAll in all it is a good read, but you shouldn't use this book only to study German, consider it as an introduction or a book to freshen up old skills and improve your German by actually getting books with grammar/vocabulary drills.
I am an American who recently moved to Germany for work, and I have using multiple avenues to work on learning to speak the local language. Ilike this book and feel that it is filling in many of the gaps left by Rosetta Stone. The book covers grammar basics well, and also covers some of the more esoteric characteristics of the language, such as the word "gern", which expressed the idea of "liking" something that is not quite the same as the catch-all "to like" verb in English.As opposed to Rosetta Stone, this book approaches the language from both a "thorough" coverage standpoint, but also a "What does a new German speaker need to know, right now?" perspective. A number of words lists are provided in the appropriate sections that cover many of the common words you'd want to know while travelling and eating in Germany. Overall, a solid pick at a reasonable price. As with any language-learning resource, you will get as much out of it as you put into it. It is best used as an additional resource to whatever you may be using to learn.
This book is very good at explaining grammar rules and how to structure proper sentences. The audio CD is very helpful to know if you're pronouncing words properly.
There are many helpful things in the book, and the accompanying CD is a bonus even though the speaker's pronunciations don't always match the instruction. That said, there are many errors and mistakes throughout the book that render it unreliable. Hopefully, a good copyeditor or proofreader will clear up the problems in a subsequent edition. Just a few examples from the opening lessons: incorrect column headings in charts (page 4), the omission of ß from the alphabet list after mentioning it in the text (page 13), and varying pronunciations of the word "Vater" (page 14). This book works best as a companion book to another primer or, better yet, personal instruction. I wouldn't trust or recommend it as the sole source for learning the language.
I needed to brush up on my German after 25 years not using it. This book explains a lot of rules but gives you such a small amount of vocabulary and not even in an easy to remember format that it is almost useless. The first 2 chapters you basically just learn 'What is your name?" and "How are you?'". Very disappointed and going to order a different book right now. :(
Learned a lot from this book! Within the first 19 chapters there's a sense feeling fluent and capable at German which I had taken in middle school and high school. Also read books by liveoutloud, a series of stories in German intended to teach as you read. Heidi's Frustuck, Die Barenhaus, (sorry no umlauts on my keyboard) and etc. They are on Amazon too, highly recommend them.
I really like this book. It's easy to use and understand. But if you buy the kindle version, be aware that it doesn't come with the audio CD. I thought I would be able to download the audio CD when I bought the Kindle version, but that isn't an option. The Kindle version is for the book only.

I am currently in Cabo and lost because of this book. The maps are almost useless, and nothing is where this book says it is.The tips are OK for the most part, but I can't give more than 2 stars because of all the extra walking I've had to do searching for places that are blocks away from where this book says they are.The book is also poorly laid out in comparison to the Moon series books I've used in the past. I bought this one for Cabo because it was the most recently published guide available (2015), but there are places listed in here that don't exist anymore.
Good book, but does need an update. Some of the locations listed were no longer in existence. -Brian Safran
Needs an editor's review. There are places where the paragraph abruptly ends and places missing information. Also, some of the recommendations seems to be from a first-timer's visit to Los Cabos. Needs an update from a native.
Not as detailed as I would have liked. Not a lot of inside information that I couldn't get elsewhere. Having said that it is better than nothing and I can't find a better book that is current.

Good overview of the area. Could be better with internet based follow up as the details are probably 2-3 years old at this point. With a Kindle version it's a shame it can't be updated regularly. Spanish language section was great for a refresher course.
Wasn't super useful for finding less obvious stuff. Then again, I was camping, what did I expect.

Rev. Zenju Earthlyn Manuel, PhD, author, visual artist, drummer, and Zen Buddhist priest, is the guiding teacher of Still Breathing Zen Community in East Oakland, CA. She was raised with two sisters in Los Angeles after her parents migrated there from Creole Louisiana. She is the author of Tell Me Something About Buddhism and contributing author to many books, including Dharma, Color and Culture: Voices From Western Buddhist Teachers of Color and The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women. She lives in Oakland, CA.

Zenju raises an essential point - Buddhists correctly identify our incarnation into bodies as a temporary affair, and tend to de-emphasize the temporary aspects of the body in favor of focusing on eternal truths. We do not have a permanent identity, identity is fluid, not just from incarnation to incarnation (if you believe in that sort of thing), but even within a lifetime, as your body ages and changes, and your experiences shape your "identity" (as much as any such thing truly exists). So, the danger is in ignoring issues relating to the body or identity as unimportant, even engaging in willful blindness about issues of race, gender, and sexuality as uncomfortable, and therefore safely shoved to one side as irrelevant. But Zenju - a bisexual woman of color - points out that we engage with the truth while incarnated in bodies, and our bodies and the things we do with our bodies shape our incarnate experiences. "Race" does not exist scientifically speaking, and is an illusory, fleeting thing according to Buddhist thought, so can't we just ignore "race"? That is a trap, because to do so is to be unjust, and to ignore that the experience of race (as a social construct, if nothing elser) has as much reality as any experience in the body. Our experiences of "race" affect us, cause us to act certain ways, be treated certain ways, which is pretty powerful for something that isn't truly real (which, I suppose, could be taken as exemplary of a certain line of Buddhist thought on ALL experiences in the body) . . . Quite a powerful, and often uncomfortable, book.
I found this a challenging, and ultimately worthwhile book to read. I like Earthlyn's concept for Zen: The Way of Tenderness. The book covers the difficulty people of color face following Zen practice in predominantly white zendos, and describes Earthlyn's journey towards ordination as a priest and her founding a zen center dedicated to practice by Blacks. As a white zen student, I found this idea divisive and offensive at first, as if there were something wrong with being a white zen student, but I kept reading and came to understand the rationale behind this approach to zen.We must confront racial division in our practice, and it is incumbent on white zen students to be truly welcoming to Black students, and understand the challenges they face in a mostly white sangha if we want to heal these divisions. I recommend this book.
Zenju Earthlyn Manuel tackles the most important issues for any religion or spiritual practice of our time. She helps us to see why Buddhist and others shouldn't keep walking over the bodies to get inside the temples to meditate or pray. We fail to be one until the pain and suffering of others often caused by spiritual policies is understood and acted upon. I am happy she had the courage to do this.
If you want to get a different perspective of race, culture, gender, politics, etc. and how to integrate these very relvant forces in American/Western society, this is your book. The author is amazing at explaining, straight forward feelings, and how to deal with these thoughts, ideas and norms within the eyes of a Buddhist practice.It is a great way to take our practice of Buddhism and meditation to the next level of integration with the world around us.
I say this because she really helped me connect some dots that I was missing. Many might assume that this book is constrained to people like her, and I am so happy that I pushed past that assumption in myself. If you want to expand your dharmic perspective on race, sexuality, and gender, then this book will not disappoint.
I had the reaction that this was the first 21st Century expression of the Buddha Dharma I have encountered. A torrent of truth, but utterly fresh. Recommended at the very least for everyone who practices Buddhism in a community.
