I loved this book. I could not put it down. His story of surviving Nazi Concentration Camps and his fathers advice about honoring his family. This book should be required reading for High School Seniors who are trying to figure out their future. Great book.
My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting this charming and intelligent man in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC. He had just finished a trunk show at Brooks Brothers and we were in DC for work. He shared some of the stories in this book, particularly about Auschwitz, his first job in America, and as 'tailor for the President'. He also showed us his POW tattoo. We were mesmerized. He was not bragging, but sharing things he thought all needed to be told. We have thought of him for years, occasionally checked on the internet to see that he was still alive (and working!) and recently saw him on television news. That's when I learned of this book. What a treasure! It's a pleasant read about a sometimes not too pleasant subject. I highly recommend who share this life experience by reading this book!

I cried, I laughed and I was deeply inspired. a 5-Star recommend!!More detail:This is two books in one. the first part is about the horrors Mrs. Greenfield experienced in Nazi Europe (Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Germany... and how he survived.The second part is a love story to the United States of America, how he was welcomed, how he was able to strive, learn, and ultimate how his hard work and dedication gave him the opportunity to buy his boss' custom tailor factory for $100,000 in the 1960s and become the tailor for the rich, famous and powerful including many Presidents of the US.Being an Immigrant from Germany myself, the only part I was missing is perhaps more details on how visits back to Germany and to the Concentration camps, which are shown in the picture part of the book, but not mentioned in the text, affected him and how he thinks about those countries today. But perhaps there is a chance to ask him this in person some day as he seems to still be in great health. and he certainly accomplished me wanting to have a suit made by his company - so a great sales job too by showing how much work goes into a truly master custom suit.
This was simply first-rate! It could have easily been three separate books: one, on life in a concentration camp and in prewar and postwar Europe; two, on why America is the beacon of freedom to the world; and three, on the ins-and-outs of the fashion industry. I sat down and read it cover to cover in one afternoon. It is exceptionally well-written and poignant ("instead of manna, God dropped munitions") and one would have to be in a coma not to be moved to tears by several moments and passages.So glad you're here Mr. Greenfield.
I couldn't put the book down: very readable, and it kept you asking: "what now? what's next?" An amazing life and story. Each holocaust victim has a profound story, and it's certainly the tragedy of human history, but Mr. Greenfield kept such an optimistic outlook once he got to the States, that anything was possible. He took whatever job he could get and became the absolute best. I wish every American would do the best possible job for every task at hand: this country would be even greater.
This wonderful book should be required reading in every high school. Mr. Greenfield takes you along on his life journey through the horrors of the holocaust to survival in America. I could not put this book down, I cried & laughed, Mr. Greenfield's vivid descriptions made me travel back in time with him. I wish I could more eloquently explain what this book meant to me. Always have faith, work hard, and never give up. Thank you & God Bless You Mr. Greenfield.
This book is an awesome testimony to the power of perseverance when all is bad. The horrors of Nazi Germany as a holocaust victim could have made Martin very bitter. Instead after losing his entire family and with help from distant relatives, Martin came to America and made a life for himself. I highly recommend this book.
Honestly I feel as though I know Mr. Greenfield after just the first few chapters. Extremely well written. I was living the hell with that little boy through those pages. Such shameful suffering. And what a grand turn of events for his future. Kudos to Mr. Greenfield and Mr. Hall.

I have three favorite books. The Bible, "Divine Intimacy" and this book, "Jesus Appeals to the World". I read a small portion of it every day and I will read it every day for the rest of my life. It is a book about falling in love with Jesus and keeping Him your priority and focus every day of your life. A MUST HAVE BOOK to fall in love with Jesus more deeply.

Yes, she goes intellectual with the extended references to John Locke. Yes, she goes deep history with several pages about Magna Carta (without telling you it was honored by English kings more in the breach than the observance up to the time of Charles I).Then I realized: Her target audience is readers of the New Yorker plus non-social science batchelor’s level Harvard grads or something like that. Socially liberal — the repeated las Casas references as an example — but not economically leftist or close.Wikipedia says: She has said, "History is the art of making an argument about the past by telling a story accountable to evidence".I’m still not sure what argument she was trying to make in the whole book. I eventually grew tired of trying to figure it out.I did learn tidbits and things, and learn enough about Lepore's writing, not to one-star it. Plus, I thought a two-star review would be less easily dismissed. That is, until Amazon being Amazon refused to accept the initial review because it had URLs in the body of the review.So, Amazon, one-starred it here because of THAT!
Lepore states, "The universe was created about fourteen billion years ago, according to the traces left behind by meteors and the afterlives of stars, glowing and distant, blinking and dim." The age of the universe has nothing to do with meteors and the afterlives of stars. Its age is inferred from: the expansion of the universe discovered by Lemaitre and later extrapolated back to the origin, consisting of a single quantum; the 3 K background glow, the residual of the big bang; and the relative abundance of the elements. I fear that Lepore, in attempting to encompass the entire United States history in a single book, may have devoted to it insufficient time to get the facts right.
Jill Lepore has gifted us with a superbly told history of the United States. Filled with exciting tales and a lyrically told history, it's an important read that's also an absolute joy to delve into. Don't let the page count deter you, from the first page, Lepore will grab your attention—hold tight, because she doesn't let go. This is how American history was meant to be shared and it's an important book for the age we find ourselves in, especially as we become frustrated with the present and begin to think it can't get any worse. I think it is a shame that Americans in general seem to know so little about their own history, probably because they were bored to death in their history classes, with terrible textbooks. It is extremely important these days for us to know as much about this subject as possible, and Lepore's telling of it is gripping.I have gotten as far as the beginning of the Revolution so far, and I am impressed, not only with her vivid style, but also with her emphasis on the role of the slaves in this period of history. In her account, they are not just sufferers of oppression but active in their struggle for liberation, preceding for many years the desire of the white colonists (a third of them, anyway) for freedom. (In fact, as she points out, many opponents of the movement toward revolution were afraid that the British promise of emancipation if they won would in fact take place.)All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to brush up on their history.
This is a book I wanted to like, but I come away from reading it with decidedly mixed feelings.I was looking for a refresher overview of American history and, while some might take exception to the events included or omitted, it is that. It is also full of interesting side notes about particular events. It is thoroughly footnoted.Its weakness lies in the author’s subjective glosses. Sometimes they are inspiring and soaring. At other times they are just dubious spins. And some points, some of which were obvious to begin with (such as the dissonance between the Declaration of Independence’s soaring declaration “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness†and the slavery of the time) are made over and over and over and over again and not always in a relevant context. Even though the point may be exceedingly valid, that can get tiresome.In short I found the book to be a very mixed bag and can’t really recommend it.
I lose a bit of confidence in a work of history when an event stated as fact is wrong even though it may be of minor interest in a history of the US. On page 32 is this: "James was born in 1566; the next year, when his mother died, he became king of Scotland". His mother, Mary Queen of Scots, did not die in 1567. Mary was executed by Elizabeth I in 1587.

This book was really well done. The pictures are simple and not overly graphic. I appreciated that common language was used as well religious language. I also felt the author was clear about the relationship between man, woman, and God and why marriage is important. I recommend that you set aside about an hour and read through the entire book at once -- I couldn't imagine trying to break it up and it's really not necessary. The only reason this didn't get 5 stars for me is because I wish there had been more information about menstruation/body changes for girls and body changes and natural things to expect with boys -- maybe a couple of follow-up books would be in order. With that in mind - I think this book for my kids would have been ok at age 7 or 8 vs. the recommended age 9 -- but it's certainly parent/child dependent. Again, overall, it was a great way to start those conversations and something I know that we will revisit from time to time as they learn and have more questions.
Scripturally based, theologically sound, refreshingly positive. Focuses on the beauty, the gift, the precious bond of marital love. Honors JPII's Theology of the Body. So many books on this topic fall short; this one is just what we were looking for.

If I could rate this book, with more than 10 stars, I would. This book really helped me and my 11 year old daughter to discuss, in the most natural and beautiful way, how babies are made. Thank God for books like this. My whole admiration from a new fan in Guatemala. Hopefully there will be a Spanish translation soon.
My boys are 11 and 12 and I am a single mother. I thought the book might be too simplistic for them but it was actually very helpful and made it easy to have the conversation with them. I actually learned some beautiful things about our faith.

While presidential biographies for kids are common fare, it is rare to see such a detailed account of an individual's time after leaving office. Seiple also takes care to profile Roosevelt's crew, including his son Kermit and respected explorer Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon. It took me 2 1/2 hours to pioneer through this riveting read. I read the full-length book a few years ago and this shortened version for young students was a great refresher and I learned much more than I did the first time. In reading this book you will be glad you weren't on this perilous journey with former President Theodore Roosevelt and his entourage. Every kind of danger imaginable is encountered on this seven week journey down The River of Doubt not knowing how long the river was or now navigable it was. In addition to having a traitor in their midst dangers galore lurk in the jungle when survival became all but impossible.As I mentioned this book was written for students but I, as an adult, was mesmerized by it as well. I would say that an individual who is reading at a good 5th grade level would be able to enjoy the book. As a parent you may want to take turns reading portions with you child one chapter at a time. I can't imagine they being uninterested in this book. I am going to purchase an additional five copies to give away as gifts as the situation arises. Do yourself a favor and buy the book. Your child will thank you for it and he may even develop an interest in reading.

My first grader absolutely loved this book. He was so engrossed he read it every spare moment he had. The bits I read with him were exciting and well written. Highly recommend!!!!

Death on the River of Doubt follows the journey of Cândido Rondon and Theodore Roosevelt as they travel along the previously uncharted River of Doubt, discussing the trials and tribulations they face along the way, from hostile natives to disease and betrayal. The book moved through the expedition with chapters about important day(s), using the writings of the participants and the newspapers of the time to describe what happened in a way that is understandable to kids, while also factually correct and similar to how more adult nonfiction books are written. This provided a pleasant surprise as usually juvenile nonfiction is generally sparse on sources and simplifies too much, but I did not feel this way at all throughout the book. Seiple balances the research portion and the kids’s portion very well, making it not seem like a researched topic, but more of a story (though without the awful presumptions of creative nonfiction). She provided a good amount of context, so people could go into this book not knowing too much about Roosevelt, Rondon, or the Amazon. The only thing I wanted more of was what they specifically discovered or how it has been helpful, but I think the interest in brevity is important here than comprehensiveness, as it will make kids want to find more. Teddy Roosevelt is such a monumental figure in US history, and this book can help kids learn about him even more. Adults could use this riveting book too.Review by Nathan P, 16, Delaware Valley Mensa
Former President Teddy Roosevelt was invited down to Brazil to give a series of lectures. While down there, he was invited to join an expedition to explore and map what was believed to be a new branch of the Amazon, the River of Doubt. Never one to say no to a good adventure, Teddy and his son Kermit joined the expedition led by renowned Brazilian explorer Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon. Instead of finding a nice easy river, though, the expedition encountered numerous difficulties and all of them were in danger of not making it out of the deep jungles of Brazil alive.This expedition is referenced a few times in THE LOST CITY OF Z so my interest in it was first piqued when I read that book. It did not disappoint as an exciting true life exploration/adventure/survival story. It's well-written and outlines a crazy adventure! It is just plain miraculous Teddy Roosevelt lived as long as he did. He must have been part cat or something with all his near death experiences. (The book does give some background on his life but basically just 2 chapters before jumping into the Rondon/Roosevelt expedition.) Hand this to teens or adults who like exciting and adventurous stories or survival stories, they should eat it up and go away hunting for more info on Amazon exploration or Teddy Roosevelt.Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. Not everyone makes it out alive and one death is a murder by shotgun that's somewhat described. Other injuries or discomforts are also a bit described and hunting for food and science is mentioned.
Great take on Theodore Roosevelt and his adventures after he left the Presidency. As an adult I picked this book up at the library for myself because it looked interesting. It was quite riveting. The book flowed well, and the pictures interspersed throughout the text were informative and relevant. The story truly brings home what it was like for adventurers during this time period and how close Theodore Roosevelt actually came to death.The book gives some background on Roosevelt as he was growing up until he gets to the White House. He then went to South America for a visit but was offered the chance of an adventure, that of mapping a river that led into the Amazon that had not been drawn on any maps previously. The hardships are clearly stated but not in a graphic way that would be disturbing to an older child. I do agree with the 7th grade and up age level. Certainly the reading level is lower than that but the content might be upsetting for sensitive children.This is an informative book, and reading it made me want to pick up other books by Samantha Seiple. This is well worth your time for adults and older children.
