Moon Outdoors owns the rights to the two best adventure guidebooks in the state, California Hiking by Ann Marie Brown and Tom Stienstra, and California Camping also by Tom Stienstra. Naturally, Moon publishers try to milk these substantial volumes for all they are worth by selling them in various other formats, one of which is to produce a "northern" California version of each volume. And there are good reasons for doing so. With some notable exceptions (Santa Barbara, for example) outdoor recreation receives more active use in the northern part of the state than the southern. So a guidebook specifically focused on that area does offer certain advantages. That said, there are a few negatives with buying this book instead of the larger volume of California Hiking.First though, the advantages of this book are substantial. It covers most of the state, not just the parts north of the Bay Area. It's 11 chapters range from the "Redwood Empire" to the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada range, south of Sequoia National Park, and pretty much everything in between. That is 801 trails for those keeping count, with hikes ranging from half mile flat walks among giant trees (like Founder's Grove in Humbolt Redwoods State Park or the Trail of the 100 Giants in Giant Sequoia National Monument north of Kernville) to multi day backpack trips like the entire John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest trail north of Mt. Whitney. In short, there is something for everyone here, and no other guide begins to compete with this one for comprehension. I plan my vacations around the chapters in this book, and have for years. Someday, I hope to complete all the hikes listed herein. At present, I have walked over 60% of the hikes in this book and loved nearly everyone. In addition, since this guide is based on the most recent edition of California Hiking, it is thoroughly updated. Information on trails, permits, etc are up to date. But I'm left with question of whether you should buy this guide. After all, everything in it is found in the larger California Hiking volume. Yes, you save almost $2 (based on Amazon's current prices) and this book is somewhat lighter if you are planning to take it hiking with you. But for not that much more money, you can get a guide that covers all the hikes in the state. If you are not that excited by southern California, and by deserts in particular, then this book is the one to get, but you lose some of the diversity this state has to offer. This book does not cover Death Valley, to say nothing of the Anza Borrego Desert, or the sky island ecosystems found in Mt. Laguna, Mt. Palomar, or the San Bernardino and Angeles mountain ranges. In short, good as this book is, I think you are better served to get the larger volume and pay a little extra. California offers the most diverse hiking of all the western states, and you should see all of it. This book gets you to most of it.

I spend a lot of time camping in Northern California but I was looking for some new ideas of places to go. This book is great. It covers well known campgrounds but also private an unknown places as well. The descriptions are well done and provide a lot of good information. Even though this is already a couple of years old it applies to most places. I used this on a weeklong road trip and was able to find an alternate campground to stay at because the campground I was planning to stay in was closed. Definitely purchase if you need ideas of places to camp in Northern California.

I just bought the updated version of this book and find it even better than my old 1990's copy, which has almost worn out from frequent use. Northern California Camping includes many great, small, out-of-the-way camping spots that you'd never know about unless you were a local. These small places can save you if the big place that you were planning to stay in happens to be full.

Put your shoes on and get outside. This book is the best for finding places to go and get outdoors. I had a copy and either lent it to someone, lost it or something. Ordered another from Amazon. Tom is great writer, gives tips on everything from day hikes to extended expeditions. Well worth the money.

We spent a week this spring using this book. Excellent resource when venturing into areas you may not know. We found it to be mostly accurate, although we went to one campsite that was supposed to be scenic and secluded, rated a 9 or a 10 and it was anything but. That knocked off a star. The navigation of the book is a bit clunky but with practice you understand why the maps and descriptions are in the places they are. Just takes getting used to.Will be using this book a lot!

I was hoping to find campground site maps or links to site maps (which site is located where in regards to the stream, lake, water source or toilets). Descriptions are overly postive ("Beautiful" campground is not close to "beautiful", "great" campgrounds that are not close to the stream or sites bunched together is not a great campground). I did an investigation run through a set of campgrounds near Tahoe and did not find any of the campgrounds were even close to the description. However the campgrounds were all listed so that part was complete. Make sure you check out your campground of choice before planning a week long trip!

The guide is often unclear as to where the entrance to certain hikes are. It's nice to do some research, but not as a guide to rely on.

Love this book. We use it to plan our trips and keep it in the camper for reference while on our trips. I purchased copies for my boss and coworker as Christmas gifts.
