The pictures in this small book were a decent selection and sharpness--no complaints. The commentary offered some context, albeit distracting and unclear at times. Here's an example of Emmerling's editorializing: "Basquiat's work thus documents the progressive construction of the artist's discordant identity, of a man grappling with the reality that he could make little use of the patterns available to him--either of his father's existence as an accountant who adopted the ideals of the white middle class, or the ghetto kid attitude of the graffiti sprayer" (89). How did Basquiat "make little use of the patterns available to him"? He has over 2000 works of art. How did his father "adopt the ideals of the white middle class"? What does that even mean? And what is a "ghetto kid attitude"? There are more examples of Emmerling not explaining or citing his claims, many of which involve Emmerling playing up the "racist" attitudes of collectors and how Basquiat was a victim.
They clearly didn’t front the copywrite money for his better pieces. Though I’m sure it would have been incredibly expensive..

I did not think I could ever be attracted to the same sex. Then I read this book and it made me start to look at the world around me differently. When I read IMRU I was just like Holland and had no clue what it meant, but it made me want to keep reading and find out. I think this is a great book for young teens, especially young teens questioning their sexuality.One thing I had an issue with was how over the top CeCe is about her sexuality. I don't think anyone I know would have ever been that comfortable in high school to be that open and over the top.
It was alright. Like most lesbian media. Maybe a little better than most of the crud that is out there. Still leaves something to be desired, definitely. The author did a good job of building the central relationship on the story, you can really feel and relate to that falling-in-love-for-the-first-time feeling. She does a great job of that actually: the feelings and the build up and the cute little relationship between the two. I found myself getting butterflies at certain points. And the story is realistic, and probably hit close to home for may readers and their experience with coming out, and the relationships it effected... it definitely doesn't sugarcoat that aspect of it. But again, the book left something to be desired. I (and probably some of you) would love to see a heroine of a unique story who just happened to be (in addition to many other cool, bad ass, sad, interesting, detailed, awesome things) in love with a woman. Like how Harry Potter has this awesome story and destiny and all these adventures and this purpose... and just happens to like girls, and have a romance with one or two as a side plot every once in while.Anyway, a girl can dream. Out of all our options, especially if you are a teen girl (I am in my 20s), this will suffice. It's just okay though.
I feel that our world increasingly divides itself more and more. Everybody thinks their group's trials and tribulations are unique, that they suffer differently, than other groups. Sure everybody's life faces different challenges. However when we take the time to walk a mile in someone else's shoes, we realise no one is really that far apart. In the end we all need the same things.
Not as classic as Annie on My Mind, and I think that's because the fallout from "keeping you a secret" isn't fully explored. Like things are happening, but we never really get the depth of the MCs' feelings on the events. It's also hard to imagine this relationship continuing after the end of the book. The ending felt a bit forced.
I absolutely loved the book! The characters were rich with personality and it was impossible not to become wrapped up in Holland's amazing story. I could really identify with the emotional turbulence involved with Holland's coming out as a lesbian even though I'm a hetero male. Julie Anne Peters did an amazing job of portraying the hardships so that even people who are not in Holland's position could really feel the weight of the crisis and feel deeply for her. Truly great story, I will be looking for more from this author in the future!
I personally loved Keeping You a Secret, and found it to be a reasonable depiction of a teenage girl coming to grips with her sexuality, dealing with family/school, and falling in love. Maybe it's just because I live in the Bible Belt, but I didn't think that Holland's mom and friends' reactions to her coming out were unrealistic. Though coming out will obviously not play out like this for every lgbt teen, it does happen to a sizable minority, hence the higher homelessness/displacement rates among lgbt teens. And whether or not you think CeCe & Holland have a healthy relationship, I think it's a pretty accurate description of what teen romances tend towards, especially when you consider that CeCe is the first person whom Holland feels this way towards. There are plenty of teenage couples who are convinced that they will be together forever, but who realistically will end up breaking up (actually, this holds true for relationships between people of all ages--have you seen the divorce statistics recently?). As for the people criticizing Holland's decision not to go to Stanford, I think that is the most shallow reason you could possibly not like the book. I know that we all have this beautiful picture in our head that everyone who is talented enough can get whatever financial aid they need to go to any college they can get into, but as a current college student, I can comfortably say that this is not anywhere near reality. In addition, going to an Ivy league school was always something Holland's mom wanted, but that Holland felt pretty lukewarm on. And considering that Holland had no idea what she wanted to do with her life (which, I'd like to add, is once again pretty common in eighteen year olds) but was leaning towards art or elementary education or something along those lines, she hardly needed an Ivy League education.
This is an outstanding story. The writing is second to none, emotions are so raw they are palpable. My biggest let down was the abrupt ending, hence four stars instead of five.I guess this is one of those stories where the reader gets to decide what becomes of the characters.

We loved this book! It was very silly. We liked that it was in English and Spanish. When they lifted into the air it was so funny. His inventions were hilarious especially the shower bed.
Cute story of a fun little mouse and his friends. Spanish words are used throughout. Fun illustrations.
There really wasn't much, content-wise and I felt the story too simplistic. My daughter was not interested, she's 2 and she's quite the bookworm and no stranger to books that teach Spanish. I probably liked it more than she did, I do not speak Spanish but understood the words and even learned a few new ones.

"Poco Loco" is an inventive ratόn - mouse - who is wildly imaginative, some might say absurdly so. However "Poco Loco" is exactly the zany character that preschoolers love to read about. His inventions - "the "Cuckoo Clock-Coffeemaker"; the "Waffle Iron-Weather Forecaster"; and the "Shower Bed" - while absurd to adults, make perfect sense to toddlers.In "Poco Loco", J.R. Krause and Maria Chua have provided readers with a nicely done tale, employing select Spanish words and phrases, that can help reinforce language lessons little ones may have an opportunity to experience. The glossary and pronunciation guide of Spanish words at the beginning of the book is an additional learning tool and may, for adults who are not be bilingual themselves, provide assistance when reading the book to little ones.Illustrations by Maria Chua are vivid, colorful, and simply done. The drawings have little visual depth; they are somewhat childish and cartoon-like. Nevertheless, this is a book targeted toward younger children. They seem to see the illustrations as being similar to what they are able to do. Thus, they may find the artwork very non-threatening and quite appealing.The story of "Poco Loco" is not complex and, for older children and adults, may be somewhat silly. Overall, this is a fun book, but not one that I think will have long-lasting appeal.
This is a great book with many wacky elements. I have especially tried teaching my daughter Spanish using more traditional bilingual books. She had become bored with my methods, always giving up. However, she managed to read Poco Loco in its entirety.The title character is a highly unusual mouse who happens to be an inventor of some of the wildest machines and gadgets. We follow Poco Loco as he tries warning his friends (a pig, cow, rooster, cat and chicken) of upcoming danger. The reader gets to see a few of his witty inventions in the book.This unconventional story is paired with colorfully dynamic illustrations. Poco Loco also appears to use more Spanish words than typical books of this kind. The glossary that is provided in the book (before the actual story) lists and defines the twenty-five Spanish words that are used. I am glad that this list appears first. It is a great element to increase understanding before going on to the rest of the book.I recommend Poco Loco in order to help naturally teach Spanish vocabulary in a fun, non-stressful way.
