I bought this book believing it would teach how to practise the Kabbalah.This book is more a history of Kabbalistic though and practises since the middle ages.If you want to learn the history of the Kabbalah this is a very good book, and is clearly written.If you want to learn to practise the Kabbalah keep looking. This is the seventh Kabbalaistic book I have read, and I can not recommend any of the others in clear conscience. I have have heard good things about "9 1/2 mystics:..." but I have not read that one yet.I will say one thing the "the tree of life" on page 15, and other places does not match the tree of life diagrams in other kabbalistic books I have read.Please E-mail me if you have questions or comments about my review. i highly recommend this book along with meditation and, as a means toheal and uplift perhaps the entire world, the entire soul, and yeah...this book is where i would start, before even the torah, or the bible and really even as a substitute for those booksbecause it contains the essence of the teachings with what seems like an honest atttempt at the minimumamount of ego manipulation and maybe it really is completely selfless, its effect is pure though the names are there, its apparent that its from something beyond all thattruly a sacred textpeace and love
Perle Epstein presents a fairly complete picture of Jewish mysticism in Kabbalah: The Way of the Jewish Mystic.She moves about from Abraham Abulafia’s system of breathing and visualization, to the Merkavah mystics of the first century, to the German Chassidim, or Pietists, who fasted and rolled naked in the snow. She is especially enamored of the Safed group of mystics who surrounded the Holy Ari in the fifteenth century, seeing it as a high water mark of Jewish mysticism never to be repeated.Espstein is especially harsh on modern Hasidism. She has good things to say about the early years of the movement, but not much else for the last two-hundred years. The book ends on this sour note. Written in 1978, she despairs of how little Kabbalistic material there is for modern Jews to consume. Of course, this has changed dramatically in the last 30 years. She laments the paucity of materials, centers, movements in 1978; now she may not like the crass commercialization of Jewish mysticism. It is hard to say.Perhaps Judaism needs as much mysticism as it can muster.
This book presents a history of Jewish Mysticism from Rabbi Akiva and Merhabah (throne mysticism), Safed to Hassidism and the Baal Shem Tov. Epstein presents a view of Safed, as a Jewish Shangri-La, as a center of creation of Kababalist tradition five centuries ago. "Because of its communal nature, Jewish mystical practice presents a double burden: one must not only learn to cleave to God, but he must take the entire community, the entire creation with him.". The largest part of this book is on Kabbalist practices, with an introduction to the path of the spheres; path of the letters; and path of ecstasy. The introductory tales of Rabbi Akiva, presents how ridiculous it is to someone to "casually" pick of Kabballah, and that should not be the intent of the reader. This is not a how to book, but rather an exploration of different practices. She presents interesting parallels between the Jewish saint (tzaddik), and the Buddhist bodhisattva as well as parallels to Taoist meditation. . I found this to be a good accompaniment to The Teaching Company course on "The Mystical Tradition".
This book was first written back in the '60's and published in the early 70's, when so many Jews were going to Eastern religions in search of the spirituality that (they thought) was not in Judaism. At that point in time, there was -- hard as it is to believe now -- very little material available about Jewish mysticism for the popular-level English reader. Seekers either had to struggle through the post-Ph.D.-level heaviness of Gershom Scholem's academic style, or learn Hebrew and read the source texts. Either was a daunting task for the casual seeker who just wanted some authentic info about kabbalah and how the Jewish mystics practiced its forms of meditation, etc.. Enter Perle Epstein (now Perle Besserman). She was already doing a series on the various forms of mysticism, and had already covered Buddhism, Zen, etc., so she decided her next project would be on the mysticism of her own Jewish background. (As an interesting aside: Like so many assimilated Jews of that era, Epstein came to mysticism and meditation through yoga and Hinduism first, and was not a religious Jew when she began the "Kabbalah" project. So, she had a two-fold struggle: (1) to find the teachings, and (2) to confront her own issues and stereotypes about the Orthodox Jews she was interviewing. The personal story of these struggles and how she collected the material for "Kabbalah" is told in "Pilgrimage: Adventures of a Wandering Jew" which, as far as I know, is out of print but well worth tracking down a copy.) The influence of her Eastern studies and practical experience with Hindu gurus and Zen masters can be seen in "Kabbalah," such as the way she describes the 16th-century Safed community of Rabbi Isaac Luria as a "Jewish Shangri-la" and a sort of ashram community, -- which, in a sense, it was. This made the teachings very understandable people who were already familiar with the Eastern forms of meditation. In fact, it was the first popular book I know of that clearly identified some of the practices as forms of visualization, use of mantras, etc. In my opinion, these types of cross-cultural comparisons are very helpful to Jews (and others) who want an introduction to how Jewish mysticism has been practiced down through the centuries. The book is not an academic tome, but is written in a clear popular, almost poetic style that I found a delight to read the first time around, and have returned to again and again. For many years during the 70's and 80's, this book was my #2 recommendation to Jewish beginners in kabbalah, as well as non-Jews wanting to know something about our spirituality. (my #1 recommendation was "9 1/2 Mystics" by Herbert Weiner).I am delighted to see that Epstein's book is available again, so I can recommend it on my website.

I didn't read this book when it first came out , I didn't have the interest. However, we lost our youngest daughter to suicide 16 months ago. When friends of mine saw the movie, they posted on fb how good it was. I decide I would read the book. My heart has ached for the things written in this book. God is good, and healing comes as we forgive and give God the things we cannot control. This is a wonderful book I would recommend to anyone. I'm so glad I read it.
I, a long-time born-again believer, was warned NOT to read this book by brothers and sister in the Faith. For many months, I heeded their "wisdom"; I'm not usually a submissive person to others, so, I was proud of myself for listening. I didn't even listen to "Restoring The Shack" on tv, so as not to be tempted or swayed--until yesterday. Then, I had to buy this book. I've never feared reading any book in my life; in fact, I've always loved and consumed as many as I could get my hands on since before I could read. So, I found it--and myself--absurd in NOT reading it! No book could ever change my Faith in Jesus, nothing is a threat to that, and I was raised with all kinds of knowledge of other religions, superstitions, and even occult things. So, I KNOW lies when I hear them. As a result, I've just finished reading The Shack. Talk about perfect timing! All it did was reinforce what I already know for many years, and the author put into words what I could never express. THANK YOU! I'll be encouraging others to read it. God bless!
I chose a 5 star rating because that is the highest rating you can give on Amazon. The Shack truly deserves more, much more. After reading this book I feel extremely blessed that God chose me to read it. The way this book is written really hits home, if you are having doubts about your faith then this is the book that will help you find a way to seek out God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Probably the worst book I have ever read! The overall message will turn me away from, not toward, God and religion. SPOILER ALERT: Yes, as a parent, one would still most likely love their child even if they committed a heinous act. But also, as a parent, if you can see your child about to commit a heinous act or acts and you have the power to stop it, but do not, you are the worst possible kind of parent and as culpable as the child regarding the act! Shame on anyone who thinks that any reprehensible act should be forgivable. I am appalled that so many people think the book has a positive message! It made me angry and terrified at what the world has become.
I have read this book twice...it is very helpful to people stuck in unforgiveness...it is theologically edgy but IMHO not in what is stated but in what is omitted...But in fairness the book is aimed at a singular issue and not intended to be a 'book of theology.' It's sole purpose is to help people see that God as love in our suffering rather than one distant and harsh. It also points clearly to the necessity of forgiving others in order to go forward in our relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Also IMHO it beautifully portrays the different aspects of a living relationship with each.

This book was more than I expected in a good way. The timing of it was wonderful (I didn't realize there was a movie in the making as well) but it offered a lot of insight and affirmed a lot of my own questions. Helped me through a personal struggle with myself, my role as a wife and mother among my other roles and gave me amazing insight and internal motivation. Definitely planted a seed in my heart. Great read.
The Shack first came into my life as the movie. Watching the movie earlier this Year touched my heart during a time when I was moving into a new chapter of my life or should I say chapters. Almost eleven years since I've lost my husband and two years since retirement. The Shack is so brilliantly written and enhances my faith in "Papa". Everyone who has lost a love one or been touched by the life of someone who has lost a love one should read this book. Everyone who has questions about having a relationship with God should read this book. I had to read the book after the movie. Of course, I wish it were the other way around. Everyone should read this book. I shall read it again and again. Thank you for this amazing work of art.

So far, David Baker's books in Haynes' "workshop manual" series have delivered the goods. His recent works on the Apollo 13 mission, NASA's Mars rovers, and the Russian Soyuz spacecraft have been well-rounded, highly detailed, and fairly readable as technical references. This book follows a similar format, the first section describing the basic principles of rocket science, propellants, and motors, the second providing histories of major launch vehicles from the German V-2 to the present day variants of the Atlas, Delta, and Ariane.As you might expect from a "workshop manual," this book is a straight-up, no BS technical reference. The main part of the text focuses on the development, inner workings, technological advancements, and variants of 20 well-known launch vehicles, including Vanguard, Ariane, Saturn, and Thor. As such, the text is rather richly detailed and best taken in small doses. There are dozens of detailed technical diagrams in here as well, along with many photographs of rockets being built, assembled for launch, launched, and of course, exploding. No doubt hardcore space buffs will find much to love here.Unfortunately, "Rocket" is a prime example of "what's here is good, BUT..." For a work billing itself as an "insight into the development and technology" of rockets and satellite launchers, an excessively large chunk of it is focused solely on early American launch vehicles at the expense of other nation's rockets. 89 pages are devoted to the Thor, Atlas, Titan, and Delta families, versus five for Soyuz, nine for Ariane, and only two for Proton. It ends up reading like the first book in a six-volume history that got scrapped by the publisher at the last minute, rather than a fully-fleshed reference book.If you already own David Baker's classic 1978 tome "The Rocket: The History and Development of Rocket and Missile Technology," you don't need to throw it away quite yet. As dated in parts as it may be, it delivers a much broader perspective and a much more readable narrative than this work. If specific impulses, expansion ratios, and Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine are part of your vocabulary, you might enjoy it, but it could have been so much more.
As a lifelong space geek and retired aerospace engineer, I really love books like this one.Dr. David Baker's magnificent volumes "The Rocket: The History and Development of Rocket and Missile Technology" (1978) and "The History of Manned Space Flight" (1982) remain the definitive technical and historical references in the field. This volume, "The Rocket: Owners' Workshop Manual," while nowhere near as comprehensive or, indeed, as weighty (in terms of pounds-mass) as the other two books, is still an excellent, if abbreviated, look at the subject. It's even very readable, for those readers who lap up techno-speak, and the hundreds of high-quality drawings and photographs add immensely to the text.I offer only one minor caveat--most of the book (about 130 of 188 pages) focuses on American rockets. Today, with the U.S. essentially turning its back on developing manned spacecraft (political lip service to the contrary notwithstanding), American rockets are only minor members of the truly international launch vehicle lineup that includes Soyuz, Proton, Ariane, Long March and others. With the demise of the Space Shuttle, Russia's Soyuz, a derivative of the original 1957 Soviet ICBM, is now the only way astronauts and cosmonauts can travel to the International Space Station. Soyuz' 60-year longevity is remarkable and unprecedented--yet it gets only a meager five pages of coverage. I'd like to see 10 times that amount.So, if you want details of the technical and operational histories of U.S. rockets, complete with many eye-watering engineering drawings and photos, "The Rocket: Owners' Workshop Manual" is a great choice for you. For similar information about the rockets of other nations, you may have to look elsewhere.
These technical books are awesome if you like reading technical stuff and if you want a primer on whatever topic you chose to read about.
