You do get the gist of the stories but the magic gets lost in the simplification. As a child I would get absorbed in these stories for hours and hours. They fueled my imagination as I thought about these far away places and times and possibilities of extraordinary things happening to ordinary people. Reading these awkwardly shorter versions made me frown and cringe. This is a classic example of how we sometimes dumb down stories for younger ears but lose the wonder of the them in the process.
Arrived in great packaging and 2 days ahead of the earliest exspected arrival date. I purchased it thinking it was a book I had in my childhood. It ended up not being the book I had though. But it’s still a great first book of fairy tails. It’s a simple set of stories, shortened up as to not lose the interest of little minds.
This has all the classics in it and is in no way a bad book, but it's not great either. Some of the stories are so short that they take away from the story. The illustrations are not as pretty as I was hoping for in a fairytale book. As you can see in one of these photos the cover is very thin. If you are looking for a cheaply priced book with a decent amount of classical fairytales in it look no further. If you're looking for a keepsake book I would look elsewhere for something better in quality.
As a young child, I remember understanding "the moral of the story" when reading the old-school Grimm's fairy tales and Aesops fables. And I read the old style, kinda creepy ones. However, this book tells the stories in a way where both my husband and I, when reading them to our little one, really don't get it...they are not told in a way that clearly, or even metaphorically! makes sense as far as a "point". In many of the re-tellings, the base storyline makes no sense. I usually LOVE DK books. But I would not recommend this one. Moral of the story? Don't buy it.
I did not like the stories. I know that it's a first fairy tales, it just really bothered me while reading.
Definitely a book to read over and over throughout my children's childhood. Love the lack of commercialism and the lovely pictures.
Loved the illustrations but some of the stories felt a little rushed. I guess it's because the authors were trying to cram 14 stories in approximately 80 pages. So what I end up doing is adding a little of my own twist to make it a little smoother.At the end of the book there was a page with some information about the original writers of the stories which I thought was an added bonus.
Short stories to read to the LO. The stories are quite different that I grew up being told. But that could just be to protect from Disney Copyrights. IE the little mermaid gets taken by spirits in the sky when she doesn't get her prince charming? But other than the different endings. It is an easy read and little little girl seems to enjoy them.

This book was one of the best resources I used (and I used a lot of them) in my LSAT prep. After reading this book and doing the practice suggested in the book, I took the LSAT in June 2015 and only missed four LR questions. I think this book is directly responsible for that.
Good for the price. I took Kaplan's test prep course but supplemented with the Manhattan trio. The books are not without flaws-there are errors in the practice questions, for instance, A and C could be the same exact answer choice, but they were great refreshers and really break down each type of question in depth, also cementing the learning with timed practice sessions. I wouldn't suggest studying solely with these books, but they were helpful and provided more practice sections.
USE THESE BOOKS for your LSAT preparation. I pretty much wasted money on the Bibles, the Trainer, and other books.Manhattan along with a ton of prep tests will prepare you!

About the Author
Damian J. Houde is Professor at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He teaches undergraduate and graduate level chemistry, biochemistry courses, and bioanalytical biochemistry. Further he is scientist, analytical development at Biogen Idec, Inc. in Cambridge, MA. He performs detailed biochemical and biophysical characterization of protein biopharmaceuticals (primarilymonoclonal antibodies and Fc-fusion proteins) for structure activity relationship studies, investigates the conformation, dynamics, and interactions (epitope mapping) of protein biopharmaceuticals, with hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry, assesses, develops, and evaluates new biochemical and biophysical protein characterization tools, coordinates and manages external academic (Northeastern University and University of Mass at Amherst) and internal research collaborations, manages and maintains mass spectrometry instrumentation, and conducts method transfers to QC. In 2009 he received the Douglas and Irena DeVivo Award (Northeastern University), in 2008 the Biogen IDEC Technology Investment Award, in 2008 the Biogen IDEC Technology Investment Award, Outstanding presentation, and in 2007 the Biogen IDEC Technology Investment AwardSteven A. Berkowitz is a principal investigator in the department of analytical development at Biogen Idec, Inc. in Cambridge MA. His technical areas of expertise are concentrated in the separation sciences and the physical sciences associated with the characterization of biopolymers and synthetic polymers where he has over 40 peer reviewed publication and has presented numerous talks and posters at a wide range of technical meetings. Much of Dr. Berkowitz’s work has centered on assessing the physico-chemical properties, micro-heterogeneity and aggregation properties of biopharmaceuticals using light scattering, analytical ultracentrifugation, chromatography, electrophoresis, and various forms of spectroscopy. His present responsibilities are now focused on providing biophysical information on the higher-order structure and structural dynamics of biopharmaceuticals and the development and evaluation of analytical tools such as H/DX-MS and NMR to support this area. Dr. Berkowitz received a B.S. degree in Biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from New York University. He then spent several years as a post-doctoral fellow at Yale University and the NIH. After his post-doctoral work Dr. Berkowitz held various positions at Celanese Research Company, J.T. Baker, and Lederle Laboratories before taking his present position at Biogen Idec.

With this book Geoffrey Ward and Ken Burns have presented a very balanced account of America’s Vietnam War, but it is much more than that. The story begins with the French colonization of Vietnam in the 1850s and ends with the fall of Saigon in April of 1975. It actually ends with an examination of how the war is remembered in both the US and in Vietnam. Very well written, liberally adorned with stunning photographs, this large volume is both a deep sweeping coverage of the First and Second Indochina Wars and a beautifully produced piece of art. And, once the First Indochina War concludes, the story incorporates the personal stories of some of those directly involved. We hear from Americans and Vietnamese, civilians and soldiers, supporters and detractors, those from the winning side and those from the losing side. It really is the product of years of research and interviews, stunning to contemplate and a joy to read.In some respects the book gives a better account of the developing history than the film it is a “companion†to. The reader will get a much better understanding of the changing Vietnamese government as the French desperately attempted to establish some sort of legitimacy within Vietnam and the transition of that government into the Republic of Vietnam under Diem.I think this book will become a standard text on the history of the Vietnam War but I do have a criticism. My quibble is with a relatively small portion of the text and it really has nothing to do with the story. That is my quibble…“Kennedy and What Might Have Been.†Why is this chapter included in this book? I find it interesting that after reviewing the diverse panoply of historiography Burns and Ward could not stay away from one of the counterfactual, what-if, perspectives that seems to be a real favorite among some historians: Kennedy would not have gone full and outright war on Vietnam. He was too smart, he was too good a guy, Camelot and all that. Well Kennedy might have inherited the war from Truman and Eisenhower but he is the one who began to Americanize the war. He is the one who sent something like seventeen thousand American military personal to operate as advisors to the RVNAF. He sent helicopter companies with the necessary pilots and crews. Americans were now directly involved in combat operations. Americans were dying in Vietnam and Kennedy kept all that secret from the American public. That is a big commitment to walk away from. American prestige was on the line and Kennedy had made several eloquent speeches proclaiming that America would “pay any price†to defend against communist aggression. After Truman, many Americans automatically believed that Democrats were reflexively soft on communism; it was in their political DNA. For Kennedy to walk away from Vietnam after ramping up the military commitment and eliminating Diem would have raised a big political ruckus. He would have had some explaining to do. History would also have viewed him harshly after supporting the coup and murder of Diem and his brother only to walk away from the mess that policy created. Diem’s blood is on Kennedy’s hands. I do happen to think Kennedy to have been a good president: the Peace Corps, commitment to land a man on the moon and bring him home alive; but please stop with the Kennedy was too pure, good and foresighted enough to involve America in a shooting war in Asia. This chapter is nothing more than fantasy. It is not history, it is fable. And, my only criticism of Mr Burns work: this is an example of ax-grinding, not the impartial umpire calling balls and strikes (two metaphors Burns frequently used during the speaking tour, in the run-up to release of the film, to characterize his approach). Truman, made a tremendous mistake by supporting French colonialism. Eisenhower supported that same mistake then went all-in with Diem. Johnson sent in the ground troops and ramped up the death and destruction. But we should give ol’ Kennedy a pass because he would have…We don’t know what he would have done! We know what he did and it was an exponential increase over what his predecessors had allowed. He gets no pass from me.Since this is really not part of the story it can be ignored and does not change my rating of this monumental work.The Vietnam War was a tragic mistake of enormous proportions. The death and destruction wrought, ending in failure, allows very little redeeming consequence. We did learn some important lessons but those lessons are easily forgotten. Ken Burns and his partner Lynn Novick would like to start a new conversation about the war. I think that can only be a good thing. I really hope it happens, even if on a small scale. We need to review the lessons to be learned from that awful war.I am glad of one thing. We seem to have thoroughly learned to not blame our valiant warriors for the blunders of our leaders.

Ward take us on a long and poignant journey through the Vietnam war, starting with events in the early 20th century and ending with modern, “capitalist†Vietnam. Along the way are any number of tragic tales, acts of bravery, desperation and savagery all in the name of a tiny country of little political or military significance. And yet it dominated the politics of at least three of the largest and most powerful countries on the planet. The book is full of an incredible collection of photographs, some familiar, some not, and excellent commentary built around many of them. If you look at the serious expression in the eyes of a young Ho Chi Minh in Paris in 1918, you can’t help but wonder what would have happened had Woodrow Wilson ever read the petition he so badly wanted to deliver. How can you not shake your head at a 1941 photo of an American OSS officer training Viet Minh soldiers how to fire rifle grenade?* The text is quite easy to read and well written, but be prepared for a long book. The book covers a lot of ground, but it not what I would consider a detailed and complete history of the war. Rather it seeks to capture, in detail, small segments of the war, concentrating on individual characters and their motivations and actions. In various segments, the authors concentrate on US soldiers, US military leadership, Vietnamese military and civilian leaders, antiwar protestors, US politics, and any number of other viewpoints. In the end, the sum of all the parts gives a pretty complete look at what happened.* The authors mostly try to maintain a neutral viewpoint, but they find it harder and harder as the book progresses. I can’t speak for the authors, but I suspect their opinion would be along the lines of “How on earth did we ever get ourselves into that mess?†And while they may be officially neutral, they can not help but note that the “stakes†we were playing for in no way matched the costs.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* I hate to disagree with historians of the stature of the authors, but I will anyway. I think that they are looking back at events in Vietnam with too much benefit of hindsight. Sure, from 2017, the whole domino theory and the importance given to a 100 mile wide strip of jungle seems absurd. But in 1966, you couldn’t get elected dog-catcher if you weren’t “tough on communismâ€. Likewise, blaming politicians for getting all caught up in the hysteria is also a bit unfair. Presidents and Congressmen aren’t going to take any viewpoints that the majority of their constituents don’t already support.* I realize it is not the author’s style to engage in this kind of analysis, but after reading a few hundred pages, it would have been nice to get a “professional opinion†on what we got for the trillion dollars and 60,000 casualties.=== Summary ===The book was long and sometimes the content was a bit tough to read- it didn’t always catch Americans at our best. But in the end it provided a look at the war from many different viewpoints, and examined the price paid by many of the participants. While the text is well written and quite informative, it was the pictures that really made the book for me. Probably the most powerful photos were a few near the end, where former enemies from the US and Vietnam are reunited, and you can’t but notice the look in their eyes of “Why?â€I would recommend the book for anyone with an interest in this period of history, although some who have lived through it may find some of the viewpoints and content a bit upsetting.=== Disclaimer ===I was able to read an advance copy through the courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley.
I bought and read the book right after watching the documentary; the book is pretty much the documentary with each episode of the documentary getting a chapter. The book, however, goes a little deeper in places and has some excellent additional essays (the one on what JFK may have done in Vietnam is well worth the read). Like the documentary series, the book is balanced, including input from participants from the United States, South Vietnam, the Viet Cong, and North Vietnam. Everything that made the documentary series great makes this book a great read.

While awaiting the next David Balducci book, I read this author's first book, Term Limits , and was immediately hooked! American Assassin is the first in the series for the character, Mitch Rapp, and starts at the beginning of his career in the spy world. The story holds your interest and I was sad when I finished the book. For me, that's always the sign of a good book, when you don't want it to end. I have since read next book in the series for Mitch Rapp titled, Kill Shot, also excellent. I would recommend to a reader interested in Flynn's books with this character to read them in order. It is not necessary but the whole of this character is so much more interesting that way!

Waited for two years for this film interpretation of the brilliant writer Vince Flynn's "American Assassin". This flick did not disappoint.There were some plot and event changes in this movie, but generally the important elements of Mitch Rapp's entry into the clandestine world of unsanctioned missions were intact. Combining the intoxicating character styles of James bond and Jack Reacher, Michael Cuesta (Director) did a credible job of bringing this popular character (Rapp was played by Dylan O'[Brien) onto the world stage as the next tough guy agent provocateur acting on the behest of a determined government elite who need a more effective means to fight back against new and increasingly powerful world threats.One aspect that I found intriguing was the youthful "kid" look and demeanor introduced in this new Rapp. This was an effective juxtaposition against the character played by Michael Keaton (Stan Hurley), and came off quite well, and should give fans of O'Brien joy as they watch him mature and develop in real time as the series moves forward. Keaton showed shades of his "Beetlejuice" zaniness at times, and this added some humor during what otherwise were difficult scenes to experience (torture). All-in-all an entertaining and promising start to what should become a classic series...
People have pretty much said everything about the book that can be said. It’s a quick read for a book of its size and it’s a good thing it’s in the series because you will want more. Story moves along at a good pace and still manages to let you know the characters while keeping up the suspense and action. If you are thinking of reading Vince Flynn‘s books, read this one first even though it isn’t the first one published. He went back and wrote this and Kill Shot as prequels to the 15 volume Mitch Rapp series. Enjoy!!!PS: They made a movie of the same name based on the book. Don’t bother with the movie, it doesn’t do the book justice at all, and changes important parts of the story.
American Assassin is my first Mitch Rapp and Vince Flynn read. I was intrigued about the books when I heard it was being made into a movie and after a quick Goodreads search on it, I determined it was a book I was intrigued enough about to order, which I did. And once I started reading it, I was hooked on the story and the character of Mitch Rapp.Rapp is one of those characters that immediately draws you in and keeps you invested in his story. He’s intense, driven, extremely intelligent, highly logical and observant, and immensely skilled at what he does. This particular book takes readers through how Rapp got his start as an assassin, going into who he is and where he came from while also showing how he became the man he (seemingly) becomes throughout the rest of the series.Once Rapp is recruited by Irene Kennedy and taken to meet Stan Hurley at the start of American Assassin, we start to see how Rapp is different from the others who came before him. All those qualities I listed above start to show themselves in varying different ways, each of which confuse and intrigue the people who either want him to succeed or want him to fail. He’s unlike anyone else, and that makes him as unpredictable as it does dangerous. Which seems like perfectly good traits for an assassin.This book takes you through Rapp’s training and into his first forays into field work and every single bit of it compelled me to read on. I couldn’t put it down once I started it, and I was never so glad to have made the snap decision to buy the second book in the series before I’d read the first as I was when I finished this book. I was also glad I’d chosen to buy both of books in print because there’s something extremely satisfying about turning the pages on this one. It’s a book that stayed me with, and made me want to go out and buy every single one of the books in the series because of how much I loved reading this one.If you’re looking for an entertaining and compelling espionage read you can escape into for a while, definitely pick up a copy of American Assassin by Vince Flynn. I am going to go out on a limb and recommend getting it in print, too, because if you’re anything like me, this is a series you’re going to want to own in print.

This book was written as a prerequisite for parents to read before enrolling their child in the Johns Hopkins childhood epilepsy program. Whether or not it will serve your purposes depends on your needs and what you already know.Childhood epilepsy is most likely the oldest use of the ketogenic diet. But there are several newer uses such as weight loss, cancer and neurological issues.I bought the book because it was referenced in Miriam Kalamian’s book, Keto for Cancer. I was hoping it would give me nitty-gritty details absent in other books. It did not, and that’s a disappointment because one of the medical groups most experienced in keto diets is Hopkins. This reminds me that the real purpose of the Hippocratic Oath (the part usually not mentioned) was restraint of trade. Use the book for its stated purpose, to get your child into Hopkins’ program. Otherwise look elsewhere. There’s much more in Kalamian’s book or that of Ellen Davis.
This book is my bible. My 2yo daughter was seizure free in 6 weeks after starting the Modified Atkins Diet. I would like to see more emphasis on hidden sugars and labels in the next edition. Love, love this book and recommend it every chance I get. Read it cover to cover.
This is the standard book that all other books are measured against for the Ketogenic and Modified Atkins Diets as far as parents are concerned. It gives you the down and dirty of exactly what to do and how to do it. It is the "Bible" of all epilepsy treatment books regarding diet. Parents need it for managing a successful epilepsy diet for their child(ren). The book is associated with Johns Hopkins University.
Must read prior to doing the diet. Can be technical, but excellent information. Does not compare Paleo to MAD or Keto.

Great book..Marrs is an excellent writer and researcher. He points out so many facts without drawing conclusions unsubstantiated by evidence.Not much new for me but for the novice it will be very eye opening if one can keep their minds open and follow the facts...I would recommend this book to every truth seeker out there with an open and inquiring mind...Very well written...Reads like a novel but is definitely non -fiction.I get the feeling that Marrs knows more than he tells but mercyfully tells what he believes the reader can believe...The truth is even more fantastic but Marrs just paints the larger picture that he is sure of...Even this is quite amazing and good for everyone to know to truly understand why our planet is so dysfunctional...
This book by Mr. Marrs is probably the second greatest book ever written on, among other subjects, mans' true origin and the reason for his creation. The first book is: "The 12th Planet," by Zechariah Sitchin....The 3rd book is: "Chariots of the Gods," by Eric von Daniken.... If you read this book it will condense these other books and many others dealing with hidden subjects the establishment does not want revealed. It would upset the order of things too much....This book is a mind blowing experience to read....You will have so much to talk about to your uninformed friends that it will make their heads spin. You will be the life of the party, so to speak...The proof of what Mr. Marrs has to say is also listed so as to dispel any doubters.....
As a note of a new book referral, I am reading Jim Marr's latest book "Our Occulted History" and finding it a wonderful compilation or even an researched anthology of much of the Ancient Astronaut material - both pro and con.I'm connecting with the Sumerian materials much more than the Atlantian chapters. I appreciate that he does add in some balancing of those who do not agree with this train of research. I like to know why and how the disagreements have been formed in "traditional" science thinking as it can be so obstinant on history like this - even with a large amount of physical evidence! "Our Occulted History" is well written and researched that I am finding it a valuable addition and consideration to this large, ever growing body of work. So much irrelevant writing has mis-referenced Sitchin in wrong and ignorant ways. Marrs does not. He shows he's dug into the deeper meanings of the Sumerian works that are the foundation for any ancient astronaut thesis. I've even learned some new things in this reading!It's freshly out in the market with current references and discoveries. It's a golden star to Marr's journalistic research that continues to exhibit Marrs' breadth of knowledge and cravings to learn more!Bravo, Jim! Thank you for an engaging read!!!
