Well that’s what she likes to call herself. Her mother thinks she’s weird because she has a superhero rodent named Ulysses as her best friend. This book is also illustrated with comic strips that are great for allowing the reader to visualize the story. It will always have a kick of humor but stays true to the author’s style with a sweet, heartwarming ending. If you or your child loves a book where the genre is fantasy and always will be based on animals with human like characteristics, then Kate Dicamillo is your author, and this is a great book for you.
Holy unanticipated occurrences! Last week I was distracted from a good book (Peter and the Starcatchers) by a better book. Okay, it wasn't unanticipated because it happens to me quite often, but that is Flora Buckman's favorite line from her favorite comic, which guides her when she discovers a squirrel with super powers. Yes, you read that right. A squirrel with super powers. Bet you didn't anticipate that, did you!In Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures there are many unanticipated occurrences and it all begins with a vacuum cleaner, a squirrel and a natural born cynic named Flora. There is a wacky cast of characters including a self absorbed romance writer, an air head neighbor, an emotionally traumatized great-nephew next door and a sad, sad father. They all tip toe right up to the line of being too wacky but only cross the line a little and in such silly ways I loved them for it. In fact, I won't even try to give you a plot synopsis because honestly, it's a simple and predictable plot but a joy to read and discover on your own.Kate DiCamillo books are always wonderful read alouds, but this one is just BEGGING for a dramatic reading. I gave it to my brilliant eight year old for Christmas and we've had a terrific time either reading alone or together. This is a great book for sitting close on the sofa so you can both see the pictures but leave plenty of room for dramatic gestures which you'll probably find necessary as you read. The illuminations (illustrations) are basic yet expressive and they really enhance the humor. Honestly, it's hard to capture the funny wonderfulness of Flora and Ulysses in a review. You have to read it for yourself. :)
It all begins when Mrs. Tickman's husband buys her a Ulysses Super-Suction, Multi-Terrain 2000X vacuum cleaner and vacuums up a squirrell. Flora Bell, a young neighbor sees what happens. She rushes over and revives the squirrell. She takes him home and names him Ulysses. Soon Ulysses begins to develop extraordinary powers. He communicates with Flora by head nods and typing letters. Flora really needs a friend because her mother and father are divorced. Flora and her mother can't seem to get along. From this hilarious beginning evolves a story that will leave you laughing out loud as Flora and Ulysses get into one scrape after another. They make many friends who like them have unmet needs. The story becomes the adventure of how Flora and Ulysses interaction with people has a chain effect that will try the patience of some and bring great change and understanding to all the lives they touch.
Imaginative story about a girl, her squirrel, her divorced parents, William Shiver, and a couple of other endearing characters. The story subtly delves into Flora's feelings of self-doubt. She's not sure if her mother really loves her. We also are introduced to William Shiver, who has his own issues of abandonment. I love how Flora fills a hole in William Shiver's heart with her kindness. If this book had been written when I was a youth, it would have ended with everyone getting back together; happily ever after and so on. This book doesn't wind everything up so neatly, but still it ends with promise. I can see why it won the Newberry award. I heard the author's acceptance speech and was so impressed with her. Excellent book--written for youth but with depth enough for all ages.

Annett's clear directions for how to establish Common Law Courts are essential for restoring democracy and will fit well with acts of non-violent civil disobedience. I also liked how Annett traced the corruption of the law back to the land grabbing of enclosures in England, Ireland and Europe 500 years ago. Common Law Courts might also serve to restore the commons from the excessive privatization where now only about 15% of the people own 85% of the land and natural resources.

As a solo bankruptcy practitioner, I cannot recommend this book enough. As lawyers, we solve the problems of others. We bring calmness and peace to their lives, but we don't devote the same amount of interest into ourselves, each living a tumult of appointments and deadlines, while trying to balance a home life as well. As someone who was recommended mindfulness and meditation to manage stress, I tried many other books on the topics. I could not find a book that truly spoke to me and my needs. This book did, more so than I could have ever imagined it would. As someone who didn't truly believe meditation would work for her wandering mind and busy schedule, this made meditation simple and accessible without belaboring it. I also found that the Meditation Instructions in each chapter were excellent guides to training your focus. I recorded myself reading the instructions to assist in my own meditations, but I think they are also available in recorded form on the book's website. The book also addresses issues important to lawyers, like compassion towards others and to yourself. This book will not remove the anxiety from your life, but it will change your relationship with that anxiety to one where you choose how it is going to affect you - recognizing the moment of choice! The biggest benefit that I have received from this book is that I am aware and able to pause throughout my day and appreciate where I am, what I am so privileged to be, and how I can continue to do what I love to do without losing my sanity or myself in the process. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling to find a meditation practice, but especially to other lawyers who may be struggling with the same stress.

By now we all know the value of meditating but don't commit to practicing even though it only takes a few minutes and requires nothing more than sitting still and breathing. Perhaps it's because you're not sure how to get started or know the "correct" way to meditate. Maybe you're frustrated at not being able to quiet your mind. Or, you think it's too new-age-y or has religious overtones. The Anxious Lawyer addresses these questions and more about meditation and mindfulness in simple, relatable, language, and provides a guide to get you started and make it a habit. Highly recommended.
There are a number of good books extolling the virtues of mindfulness and meditation. In The Anxious Lawyer: An 8-Week Guide to a Joyful and Satisfying Law Practice Through Mindfulness and Meditation, authors Jeena Cho and Karen Gifford target fellow lawyers as a group who could especially benefit from incorporating regular meditation into their lives. They set out an eight week program designed to introduce their readers to a variety of meditation practices, including following the breath, mindfulness meditation, loving-kindness or meta meditation, mantra meditation, heartfulness and gratitude meditation. The weekly meditation exercises are accompanied by a series of "off the cushion practices" in which the practitioner incorporates some associated assignment into his or her daily routine in order to enhance the meditation experience. All of these are intended as a bridge to an continuing meditation practice tailored to the reader's experience and life goals.The authors tailor their teachings on their subject specifically for lawyers, and to the stresses that are part and parcel of the legal profession. These include compassion fatigue, pressure to generate high billings, adversarial litigation, dealing with difficult clients, opposing counsel and judges, and generally losing balance in one's life. Lawyers are asked to shoulder other people's problems, and have very little control in eventual outcomes because of the number of variables that present themselves. They offer practical and useful advice, while ably presenting a good case for why meditation is especially beneficial to lawyers and how mindfulness can help lawyers to better focus on the task before them, work more efficiently, and lead more balanced lives.The question begs to be asked as to whether or not this book is beneficial to non-lawyers. Clearly the meditation practices will be of benefit to anyone, as will the exercises for generating intention and purpose in one's life. Some of the helpful suggestions about dealing with difficult clients and colleagues, and about handling compassion fatigue will translate to many other professions. While I cannot guarantee that it will be the magic pill for everyone wrestling with some form of anxiety, as the authors point out, the benefits of regular meditation have been empirically shown to have a number of health benefits, both physically and emotionally. These authors have crafted a workable and methodical program that can lead to a more disciplined, less stressful approach to meditation, one that doesn't take much time, and one that offers a viable option for the busy professional.

About the Author
Volume Editor D. K. Sachdev is Founder-President, Spacetel Consultancy and Adjunct Professor, George Mason University. He has 60 years of professional experience in the development of satellite and telecommunication systems. From 1978 to 1996, he led INTELSAT s technology development and spacecraft planning and engineering. Following that, he managed the establishment of the WorldSpace digital radio system and the initial development of system architecture and infrastructure for XM Radio. Since 2000, he has consulted with a range of new and innovative satellite systems. He received the Vikram Sarabhai Award in 1976 and the Arthur Clarke Foundation Award in 2003. He was inducted into the Society of Satellite Professionals International Hall of Fame in 2009. He is the author of Business Strategies for Satellite Systems (2004) and the editor of Success Stories in Satellite Systems (AIAA, 2009).

If you want to understand today's world of communication satellites, this book is a must-read! I like the overall flow of the material: starting with the preface written by D.K. Sachdev, and ending with his concluding chapter that ties it all together and takes a look at future trends. The individual chapters are written by leaders across the satellite industry, enabling the reader to gain a solid grasp of all aspects of this exciting, important and ever-evolving industry. I also like the three added bonuses provided at the end of this book: 1) short biographies of all the contributing authors; 2) a comprehensive index (this alone makes this book a fabulous resource for all areas related to communication satellites); and 3) a series of 34 (yes, I counted!) beautiful and informative color photographs and charts.I worked in this field, and met my husband Harold Rosen there. He died in late January of this year. I am enormously touched that D.K. Sachdev, with the consent of all the authors, dedicated this book to him.

As an adult reader of the "Anne of Green Gables" series, I was drawn to this artful cover, a refreshing change from the juvenile formats. Sadly, the cover is the only enjoyable part of the book, due to the massive amount of faded text crammed onto each page, surrounded by minimal white space. The production of this format is an injustice to the author, rendering her delightful stories into a tedious, painful reading experience, where it is difficult to visually follow one line to the next. Do yourself a favor, and choose another published format of this book for your reading pleasure.
Kilmeny of the Orchard is a lesser-known novel written by L. M. Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables. The premise of the story is as follows: eligible bachelor Eric Marshall goes to Prince Edward Island as a substitute teacher in his friend’s place. There, he meets Kilmeny Gordon. a beautiful and talented girl who steals his heart. Will Kilmeny’s scandalous birth and her disability prevent them from being together?Eric Marshall is the handsome son of a well-known businessman, who has recently graduated from Queenslea College. Due to his wealth and statues, Eric is expected to find a suitable young lady to marry, yet he doesn’t want to rush. Not long after settling into the small town of Lindsey, the mesmerising notes of a lonely violin pull Eric into a gorgeous yet deserted orchard in which he comes across the most charming girl he has ever seen.“To his latest day, Eric Marshall will be able to recall vividly (...) the velvet darkness of the spruce woods, the overarching sky of soft brilliance, the swaying lilac blossoms, and amid it all the girl on the old bench with the violin under her chin.†(p. 52)Kilmeny is talented, childlike and mute. Though her aunt and uncle isolated her from the outside world, she is caring, well-read and clever. Her sweet nature and Eric’s friendly approach made the development of the romance enjoyable to read despite the stigma surrounding Kilmeny’s disability.“More than ever at that instant did she long for speech—speech that would conceal and protect where dangerous silence might betray.†(p. 171)Though Kilmeny’s birth and disability made her feel bad for herself, I think that both she and her mother Margaret were just struck by bad luck and not necessarily by moral misconduct or sin as the author implies. I actually see Margaret as a remarkable woman who had a strong personality that the rest of her family looked down upon, due to the mentality of the time.I liked the way the orchard came to life along with its vivid colours and floral scents which formed an enchanted place where Kilmeny played her melancholic tunes. Though I enjoyed Eric and KIlmeny’s friendship and budding romance, I felt that the dialogue was pretty artificial and the characters were underdeveloped and blend. However, the thing that disappointed me the most was the unrealistic climax of the story that made me think of the Deus ex machina plot device.
As all of Ms. Montgomery's writing, this story pulls the emotions out of you, and you hear yourself laughing, crying, or cheering your favorites on.It is too bad that such innocent girlhood is even more rare now than it was then.I highly recommend this story.
This was the last book I read in the Anne series all of which I enjoyed. The author is able to use description in a pleasing manner as well as using language which I find fascinating and enjoy. All the books are written in a period which interest me. As one of the last books written in this series it moves to the time of the the first world war and brings across how difficult it must have been for those left behind, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones who have gone to fight. The Anne series is an enjoyable read for language, description, humour, and story content, this the last book did not hold me as strongly as the previous books but was nevertheless enjoyable. If you enjoy reading the Anne series then this book is worthwhile including.
Charming lesser-known work by the author of Anne of Green Gables - it has a dreamy quality that is something like the sort of story Anne might have made up herself. It's a light romance with beautifully evocative descriptions, and a happy ending.The cover art is beautiful, and hints at the story inside. The Kindle conversion is good as well.
Ever since I was a little girl I have loved the Anne stories. Montgomery creates lifelike and compelling characters who I cannot help but love. Their personalities come through clearly in their dialogue and I have always found that I could almost hear them in my mind. Rainbow Valley is no exception to this rule. I fell immediately in love with the Merediths and enjoyed catching up with old favourites. My only complaint is the plot structure, which tends to be episodic and rather more like Mongomery's 'Chronicles' than the rest of the Anne series. Never the less I really enjoyed revisiting this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the series, though in my opinion it would not stand alone well.
This one didn't live up to the memory I had of reading it as a tween. It was an early book of L.M.M.'s; boy takes over teaching position for sick friend, boy hears beautiful violin playing from an orchard, boy falls rump over teakettle in love with violinist, and is dismayed to find she is a fiercely protected mute girl who has hardly been out of her house since she was small. From then on it is a pitched battle as the hero seeks a way to make Kilmeny whole, and to make her his. In this one the ... I don't want to say racism; perhaps ethnocentricity is a kinder word, or xenophobia... comes out more strongly than in most. It's a slender book, sweet (as always), and wrapped up a little too neatly (as always) - and without the depth of charm that carries off any faults in the other books.
This was a sweet novella. It was fairly predictable, but pretty-well written. I didn't like the emphasis on beauty. As soon as anybody saw Kilmeny, they fell in love with her because she was so beautiful. Of course, she was also loving, kind, sweet, innocent, caring, etc., but the main point was that she was beautiful. So, it was kind of like a fairy tale with a beautiful heroine, a handsome hero, and a perfect ending. It didn't have any sex or swearing in it.
