I love this series. I love these books because while there's a lot of drama, it's never for its own sake. Stories about workaholics, who live for their profession, who live for helping people. Stories about workaholics who find it difficult to commit because it means more time for their partners and less for their mission to help people.What I really liked in this book was that both Krys and Darcy know what they're getting into, so the drama is never about the lack of communication. They always do their best to make the most of it what they have.
Krys is an ER doctor and meets Darcy an army met who was injured in the line of duty. Krys works to much both at the hospital and the free clinic. I enjoyed catching up with the characters from the first two books. This can be read as a stand alone. You don't need to read the first two. I recommend this book.
I enjoyed the story of Krys and Darcey as they explore an instant connection so reluctantly. Kyrs was guarding her heart and fighting the attraction she felt. Darcey was reading to try and patiently charming her way to Krys heart. Strong women sharing strong emotions and deep love.
Finally Krys finds romance and in a very funny location! But the end results were waiting out the ER doctors workaholic ways. Darcy was a reminder of some of my days in the military and how hard it was to keep a relationship while in. But true love found its way through the turmoil making this a wonderful love story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was great to read about Keys and her obsession with working in the hospital and free clinic. Enter Darcy who is another great character who is Krys' love interest. Also got to see the other characters in there lives. Great read
Workaholic doctor running the emergency department at Lakeside directs the day like an orchestra director. She flows through the daily crises with no hesitation or error. When she meets a medically retired combat medic, her world may never recover. Recommend.
I really liked Love Trauma. The third book in the Lakeside Hospital series. Great story about Krys and Darcy. The lesson? Letting someone into your life to distract you from work can be a good thing.
I really liked this book. I liked how they first met and how Darcy never gave up on trying to tear down Kyrs's walls and find her way to her heart.

Wish everyone could read this book. It enlightening in the sense that it affirms and dispels myths and common knowledge about adolescence. A must for parents, educators, policy makers and anyone interested in understanding the youth. It gets a little dense towards the middle.
The section of the book that I liked best was one that a reader rarely encounters in other books on the subject. In that section, Professor Blakemore reminds the reader of the current limitations of neuroscience, the problems of doing good scientific research, and the issue of mistaking association for causation.

Inventing Ourselves by Sarah-Jayne Blakemore is an excellent basic neuroscience primer for people with a little exposure to topic. On the surface it may seem a little daunting due to the amount of research that is cited for the lay person but Blakemore makes the information accessible to anyone that is interested in the subject by not over using neuroscience jargon and clearly defining all terms that are needed.The book gives you a good overall view of the subject by devoting its first few chapters to providing a basic background on the psychosocial and developmental issues that adolescents face. The next few chapters detail some of the different structures in the brain, what those structures do, tools used to examine the living brain (MRI, fMRI, PET Scan), the differences between the brains of children, adolescents, and adults and the implications of those differences. The lasts chapters delve into more implications of the developing brain and rates of development, what can happen when things go wrong, research, and implications and possible interpretations of that research.A few of the topics I found most interesting where:1) How individuals vary on the rate at which different structures in the brain develop and what the implications those different rates may have not only on risk taking behavior of the individual but what that may mean for the individual when they are an adult. (prefrontal cortex rate of development compared to the rate of development of the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens)2) The type of marketing and messages that teenagers are more likely to respond to based on the fact that they are less impacted by fear of adverse consequences than adults.3) The research on how brains develop differently in people with different mental conditions like schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, etc.4) The effects of sleep deprivation on teenager’s brains.5) Possible improvements that could be made to our educational system based on their specific developmental needs.In short, this book is an excellent resource for parents frantically trying to understand their children, educators, other professions that deal with teenagers, or to those interested in neuroscience. The author is very knowledgeable and takes a compassionate view of people going through the formative period of life.I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Young people have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to wire their prefrontal cortex for crucial critical thinking and executive functioning skills. So when a new book comes out about this, one expects some new insights.Unfortunately, this book, years after books like Jensen's The Teenage Brain, adds nothing to the more than dozen books on the topic that preceded it. One wonders why the author would go to the trouble if she wasn't going to add something useful to the body of knowledge. I have to say I'm disappointed.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Really insightful! I think that most parents of teenagers, even those who read a lot of parenting books, would come away with a brand new understanding of what is going in their teenager's head. I have a 16-year-old who actually shares a lot with me but this book gave me some good ideas about how to approach her on difficult matters and how best to help (and when not to). Definitely recommend.

In the top picture, I marked the hikes that I hope to accomplish this summer, and the lower tabs are hikes I'd like to do if I get back to the Bonavista Peninsula this summer. The book is well laid out, focusing on regions, clearly indicating hike difficulty, trailheads, camping areas, and wilderness trails. As the book states, the maps are not to be used for navigation, but are good indicators of trail lengths, and for the clearly labeled trails, are sufficient guides for the average hiker. Each trail features some history and information about the trail, colour pictures, and a little box of added information, typically about Newfoundland terminology, added history, or information about the flora and/or fauna of the area. The book is also clear about its shortcomings, indicating that those looking to hike the East Coast Trail Association trails should contact the ECTA for further information. Similarly, some wilderness trails are described in the book, and the authors suggest either going on a guided hike, or at least checking in with the appropriate organizations before attempting these trails. Also, it is stressed that proper maps are necessary for these hikes. Two features I really like in this book are the small appendices of Wildflowers of Eastern Newfoundland and a Trail Completion Checklist. Certainly, for anyone passionate about floral identification should head out to these trails with a proper book about Newfoundland wildflowers, but for the more casual hiker, the appendix gives many of the more common wildflowers. I know I will start to keep this book in by tour bag to help me identify flowers for visitors I take on tour. The Trail Completion Checklist is a great addition for the achievement hunters, like myself. I normally would not mark in a book, but in this case, I made an exception and marked the trails I have done. This is a great book for anyone interested in hiking. This is an essential sourcebook for anyone desiring the utmost experience of hiking in one of the most fantastically scenic places of North America. There's not much alternative. The East Coast Trail Association can provide loose-leaf, more detailed maps of that fabulous trail but they are difficult to keep together. This guidebook goes beyond the East Coast Trail and covers many other trails in other parts of the great island of Newfoundland. Good pics and information.

I bought this book after it was referenced in the very well-written The Panic Virus (Seth Mnookin), which I'd highly recommend. I was curious about a professional's take on math skills in the general population. There's plenty of good insight and information, but it's like the author couldn't make up his mind if he wanted to rant or educate. He covers a number of numerical fallacies and adds explanations, but often it feels like the explanation would come up short to anyone who really didn't understand the particular issue being covered. I'm quite good with math myself so it was easy for me to follow everything, but parts of the book came off more as a "we smart people get why that's so dumb". I think the book could be improved by either tightening it up and focusing on a more advanced reader group or by really fleshing out the explanations to try and really help readers who are not good at math and actually suffer from the innumeracy/ies he describes. He could probably have done both even, if he set up chapters with a high-level concept, issue and effects section, then an educational/explanation section that the advanced reader could easily skip over.Lots of good, but could really use a revision or two.
The author goes through a large number of real-world examples of applied mathematics, that I (a retired engineer) had thought were like breathing out, breathing in. When I shared a couple of them with my adolescent grand-children, I found some enthusiastic "aha!!" moments. Huh...

Innumeracy makes you look at yourself and others around you and see how understanding numbers can help you improve in numerous ways. Paulos applies mathematics to almost every aspect in life. If you believe you are "not a math person," then this is the book for you. Using real life examples, Paulos makes you understand why math and numbers are so important. Innumeracy shows how celebrities, presidents, and major politicians use numbers in the wrong way. It is amazing what you will find out in this information-packed book. From statistics to probability to the multiplication principle, this book has it all and is written in such a way that makes even the most boring subject interesting to any reader. Witty and to-the-point, Paulos writes a book that could change the way people think for the better and most likely improve our society as a whole. If everyone read this book, it is amazing what the results would be. He takes the most relevant and sometimes controversial subjects and applies them to math while pointing out how some things are not correct at all. You will soon find yourself thinking twice about saying, "I am not a math person" or "Math just isn't my subject."
This is the book for people who want to go one step beyond HOW TO LIE WITH STATISTICS. So many of us are bewitched by sloppy statistics, by flawed procedurals that wind up in the mass media and other lies, some benign, some not, that author Paulos felt this book was necessary. He went on to write a couple more according to the same themes.
John Allen Paulos passionately explains in a personal essay the probabilistic nature of life. He believes that too often people are innumerate and have many misconceptions about math. He enumerates these fallacies in the preface (Paulos, xii,xiv):1. Math is nothing more than computation;2. Math is a completely hierarchical subject;3. Storytelling is not effective as an educational tool in mathematics;4. Mathematics is only for a few;5. Math numbs or limits our freedom.Since Paulos studied philosophy as an undergrad and mathematics in graduate school, he respectfully acknowledges the duality of the two disciplines. Throughout the book he makes comparisons such as "The romantics believe that a concern with numbers numbs us to the big questions of grandeur of sunsets and waterfalls" (Paulos, 179).Paulos provides real world examples of innumeracy in subjects like stock scams, choice of spouse, newspaper psychics, diet, medical claims, lottery, astrology, drug testing, insurance and law. At times the reader must patiently muster through detailed proofs. But, don't worry as Paulos promises "there won't be a test" (Paulos, xiv). Be patient, just rest and relax while reading "Innumeracy" then will you thoroughly enjoy it. If you are among the innumerate then simply read through the math formulas without a concern for grasping the conceptual depth. John Allen Paulos is flexing his numerate muscles giving Innumeracy greater strength.The author's aim is to make each of us less intimidated by the numbers. He begins by familiarizing the reader with the basis of counting: how many people are in the US; how many people in the US are under 18, how many die each year; how many cigarettes are smoked each year; and how many words are there in a good sized novel?Many of us believe incorrectly in the magic of coincidences. However, there are no coincidences instead statistical probabilities. For example in a room of 23 random people - 2 or more will have the same birthday. Another example is the old adage "everything comes in threes" (Paulos, 69). Again this is just statistical probability since if you wait long enough things will come in sets of three. Another misconception is the "why me?" attitude toward misfortunes. Bad things happen periodically, the probability is that they're going to happen to somebody, why not you?"The tendency to attribute meaning to phenomena governed only by chance is ubiquitous" (Paulos, 114). The fruitful example the author uses to illustrate this concept is regression to the mean. Regression to the mean is the tendency for an extreme value of random quantity followed by a value closer to the mean. In this case he provides the example of very intelligent people who may have intelligent offspring, yet generally will be more likely to be less intelligent than their parents.John Allen Paulos has an affinity to number ID over name as a means of identification since no two people can have the same ID number. However, he is appalled by the use of an excessive number of digits. In being numerate one would know that an identification number with 9 digits will have 109 (one billion) possible different numbers.Innumeracy covers relative risk, which is a significantly large issue for Public Health and the future of health care. This interesting passage in the book proposes that a logarithmic safety index be used. In this way we would be measuring the relative safety against the relative danger adding on the likelihood of the endeavor.Innumeracy is not a romantic beach read. Its meager attempt to be sexy is the argument over the "bell-curve" where "the urge to average can be seductive" (Paulos, 169). The appeal of this book comes from the nature of the author's experience in having studied philosophy, literature and mathematics. Paulos is a believer in the human condition, specifically the tendency to want it all. Numeracy will help people understand that there are going to be trade-offs. A romantic at heart he adamantly opposes the view that mathematics is esoteric and those that study numbers are "coldly rational". The author's desire is to stimulate numeracy and enhance the appreciation of the probabilistic nature of life. Not the sort of book that would normally hold my attention, but the sensitivity and openness of the writing made me want to know the author better, and that quest kept me following in his footsteps from chapter to chapter. I read it in one sitting, lest I lose sight of him in the complex environments he brings so vividly to life. When I turned the last page, I left the book feeling as if I'd sat across the aisle from an unforgettable individual on a train.The journey was over all too quickly and I got off at my stop glad to have met him, but with a hint of regret at the thought that I'd never encounter him again. It takes a brilliant author to accomplish that. Don't pass this one by.
When a five-year-old child falls asleep on a train in India, his life is changed forever. As he sleeps, the train transports him away from everything he knows. The child from a rural village awakes in the capital city of India, Calcutta, with all the dangers an urban setting brings. Used to begging for food, he manages to scavenge enough to survive, choosing to sleep each night with a group of holy men, thereby insuring his safety. The boy's name is "Sheru," which is the Hindu word for "lion." My first question was answered, for I could not see a connection between an African animal and a small child from India. Over time, Sheru becomes Saroo, the name he goes by today. After surviving about two months on the streets of Calcutta, Saroo ends up in an orphanage while authorities attempt to find his family. When no one comes forward to identify Saroo, he becomes available for adoption. Within a few months, a childless couple, the Brierleys, adopt Saroo and take him to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia to live. A few years later, the couple adopts another little Indian boy, Saroo's brother, Mantash. While life in Australia is a happy time for Saroo, he never forgets his Indian family, his mother, Kamla, named after the Hindu goddess of creation, Kamala, his two older brothers, Kallu and Guddu, and his younger sister, Shekila. The father of the family has married a second wife and has abandoned his first family, thereby leaving them pitifully poor. Kamla earns a meager living carrying construction bricks on her head, but all the children scavenge food and beg for money to survive. As the years go by, Saroo wonders if his memories of his previous life are accurate or merely the imaginings of a five-year-old. Saroo has his Australian friends and his Indian friends, and he becomes aware of the internet and Google Earth, a program that allows one to get a bird's eye view of geographic locations. It is then that Saroo decides to search for the neighborhood in which he grew up. After five years of meticulous searching and against all odds, on March 31, 2011, Saroo locates the house he grew up in! He begins to plan his visit to India twenty years after he left it. Concerned he will hurt the feelings of his adoptive parents, he gently refuses their requests to accompany him, feeling this is something he must do by himself.The rest of this book deals with the incredible reunion with his Indian family, how both his families meet, and how the product of two widely diverse cultures adjusts to a contented future. The years-long search could have ended in failure many times, but I believe Destiny played a major role in reuniting Saroo with his Indian family. It also speaks to the stubbornness of an individual who refuses to give up on the dream of finding his original family, assisted by countless people who offered opinions, encouragement, and other assistance when needed. I was especially impressed by Kamla's faith that her son would return if she simply stayed where he could find her. I highly recommend this book.
I'm pretty sure that almost everybody who reads this book, "Lion" by Saroo Brierley, is going to see the movie with Dev Patel. Or, has already seen it. The book, which was originally published under the title of "A Long Way Home: A Memoir", has been reissued as a tie-in for the newly released movie. "Lion" is the story of a journey a five year old boy makes by himself from his hometown in rural India, to the large city of Calcutta. (now, Kolkata) and after being lost in the streets of the huge city, is taken to an orphanage, where he is luckily adopted by an Australian family from Tasmania. He lives the next twenty years, happily with his new family, but always remembers the tragic journey and his mother and siblings he left behind in India. With the advent of Google maps, he's able to trace his birth family's village. He then travels back to India and is reunited with that family, while remaining close to his adopted family and life in Australia.That's basically Saroo Brierley's story and how he tells it in the book is interesting. But as I read it, I felt a bit of a remove from Brierley's telling it. Am I asking for more emotion, and if so, is that a fair request? I'm looking forward to seeing the movie next week, and there, on the screen, might be a more vivid recreation. I enjoyed reading the book, though.
What I found interesting was that I could envision the book as a movie from it's narration--even if a movie about this story had not been made.We first meet Saroo as a toddler, then narrating his memories before the age of 5. He does so for many chapters, until he becomes an adult and seems ready to back track any memories or words he had seen from his past. ( At this point he has moved out of his loving, adoptive home on another continent), yet felt comfortable enough to find his biological family--the one he remembers at age 5--from India. And that, he does!Over all, I believe that the adoption center he was living in after losing his way at the age of 5, saved his life. If he had continued to live on the streets of places after becoming disorientated and lost from riding 'run-away trains', the child could have been taken into horrific bondage. God Bless him for that not happening!It is a fine story.
I remember being 5 yrs old and I think it would have killed me to find myself alone in a huge city like Saroo did. This is an amazing story of his survival, adoption in Australia and his eventual reunification with his family in India. This true story kept me on the edge of my seat throughout and in the end left me with joy in my heart! In the end many lives in India and Australia were enriched because of Saroo's adoptive parent's selfless decision to adopt, educate and nuture a needy child. As well as a compelling story, the book is well written. I will admit, I skimmed through one section about 1/3 of the way through. I don't know if it was an issue too heavily dwelt upon or my weak and pampered life. I couldn't take hearing again and again of the reality of 5 yr old Saroo's hunger and total destitude situation. I ached too much for the little boy. I would love to see the movie and I definitely recommend the book.

Great book. My son loves it
I just finish reading this book and can't wait for my next great cycling adventure. Leon starts as a novice cyclist and decides to ride out the 2008 recession by going to the US (NYC), working for 6 months then setting off across the US on a bicycle tour. Along the way we grow with him and experience what its like to learn (from scratch) how to bicycle tour. As he is Irish, it is also interesting to see the US from an outsiders perspective. He seems to do a good job of giving the unvarnished truth of what he sees (I've seen other reviews that take offense at his candidness). Basically, his critique of Americans is pretty spot on (99% very friendly but the other 1% making too much of a bad impression). If you've ever dreamed of just jumping on your bike and leaving town, this is the book for you. Well written, entertaining, and informative. Highly recommend!
A pleasant tale of a young man at loose end in the midst of the 2008 recession who decides not to be idle. Along the journey across America he grows a bit learns a bit and tells us a bit about it. I am not sure that what the author brings to the genre warrants a book though. The history is sparse. The geography, natural history are sparse and flawed. His knowledge of where he is and where he is going strangely vague. But he got on a bike and road to a new calling, and I enjoyed the trip with him.
This is a typical travelogue - occasional humor and unique observation, mostly stuff you'll find in other books of the topic/genreWhat the single star reviewer noted and I will recapitulate here, is this author has youthful blind spots. On one page he will say things like "Glad too that there is still enough curiosity in the Americans psyche to draw so many others to such wild spots (referring to Yellowstone" - implying a certain dimwittedness - and yet says this not a paragraph later "A horribly busy visitor centre greeted us at a fork in the road and we were outraged at having to pay six dollars for a jar of peanut butter."So let me get this straight - Americans, as a generality, are not curious, while this Irish contribution to the planet can't seem to see why market forces would cause peanut butter to be x3 expensive in one of the most busy national parks in the country? Why thank you Leon for the pleasant compliment followed by a demonstration of your astute understanding of supply/demand. A question for you Leon - why not stock up on peanut butter when its cheap?This is not the only example. Leon also goes into Canada without his updated visa documentation and wonders why he's given the 3rd degree when he returns. Yea it was excessive what happened to him - and completely avoidable. Apparently since one can walk between any Euro-country, logically it must follow this applies to all countries!I enjoyed his perspective thru New York, but after that it was generally downhill. I would hope someone who did a similar ride would get progressively more enlightened and stop focusing on such petty issues. But hey, the victim card is popular.....
Sounds like this guy’s an unlikeable twit, and didn’t even want to be on the trip. Skip it for another cyclist travelogue by someone who actually enjoy the physical challenge of the ride, and who would have been interesting to talk to.
I also rode cross country in 2002. I found this book to be a very accurate account of my personal growth and development along the journey. You begin a trip of this scope with a lot of uncertainty, first it is just can I physically do this but once you realize you can you begin finding out other things about what really matters to you. Your values. It is an amazing privilege to take 50 or more days and do just one thing (other than work) . Through out the day there is time for reflection. You are disconnected from any sort of set routine. This gives one a great sense that there are many more possibilities out there for those willing to seek them. Bottom line read the book take the journey you won't regret it.
I liked this young Irish man's stories of riding westward across the US. He gained vast amount of self confidence and fitness,you could feel it in the book. From such a novice he turns into a world traveler. I am inspired.
As nice as his journey was, personally I didn’t like the writing style and at times it was toooo much details and got boring
