The book sparkles because of Davenport's access to the main players and his talent for crisp storytelling."―Walter Isaacson, New York Times Book Review"The Space Barons is a pacy, smartly reported book on the new generation of entrepreneurs who are transforming the business of space... [The] book fizzes with some wonderful human stories of imagination and endeavor but also provides a broad sweep of the current state of the space industry."―Financial Times "Davenport displays his reporting and storytelling skills. His writing is tight and, suitably for the subject matter, propulsive. He fleshes out the main protagonists with fine character vignettes."―The Washington Post"Highly accessible... Davenport's access to key players, from the companies' founders to its employees, lends authority to his account."―Scientific Inquirer"Important and revealing"―The Weekly Standard"The Space Barons is fastidious and engrossing"―The Spectator"Entertaining, skillfully narrated book"―The Week"In The Space Barons: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos, Christian Davenport tells the backstories of the billionaires who are vying for control of the emerging NewSpace industry."―The New Yorker"Christian Davenport has written a terrific book on the new space entrepreneurs."―Newt Gingrich"Topping my reading list for space fans this summer is The Space Barons: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos, Christian Davenport's fine new book on competition in the New Space world."―Forbes.com

The book we've all been waiting for. I've been deeply engaged in this industry since the start of the incredible story that Davenport tells and I can say that this is the most comprehensive and professional treatment of the commercial spaceflight revolution to date. The author is a professional reporter and a fine wordsmith who understands his context and characters. He weaves a tale of adventure, excess and excitement on the final frontier that will keep even non-space cadets enthralled. This is a character based study and is not particularly distracted by the technologies or the data. You won't find the seconds of ISP rating on the latest SpaceX second stage engine configuration or the coefficient of drag on Virgin's VSS Unity. What Davenport does in nail the big personalities and unusual motivations that drive this generations boldest entrepreneurs to go where none have gone before. "Space Barons" is a great summer read for anyone but it is a must-read for any aspiring Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson or Elon Musk. I hope they all. pick it up and are motivated to do impossibly great things someday themselves.
Not long ago, I reviewed Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance, and The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon by Brad Stone. Both books are well done. They're the product of professional journalists who are good at what they do. But neither book comes close to Christian Davenport's superb new book, The Space Barons: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos, in offering insight into the personality of these two extraordinary men who are the central characters in his book.Illuminating personal detailsThe personal details about the lives of Musk and Bezos are abundant and highly revealing. For example, here is Davenport with an anecdote from the early life of Elon Musk: "He had such concentration that as a toddler in Montessori school, his teachers would have to pick him up—in his chair—to keep him moving from task to task." And this about Bezos: "His girlfriend from high school had once told an interviewer that Bezos had founded Amazon in order to make enough money to start a space company." Davenport notes that Bezos "conceded that there 'is some truth to that.'"The pivotal role of four private space companiesDavenport's subject in The Space Barons is the pivotal role of four billionaires and the private space companies they've started in the emergence of the rejuvenated space industry. All four men envision lowering the cost of space travel and making it more accessible—and Davenport makes clear that they have taken great strides toward this goal. Although Musk and Bezos occupy center stage, Paul Allen (cofounder of Microsoft) and Richard Branson (the Virgin companies) also play large roles. Davenport tells the tale with great assurance in prose that is always lively and engaging. He interviewed all four of his subjects and many of their associates (and critics) as well. This is the remarkable story of four self-made billionaires whose great wealth and passion allowed them to pioneer space technology that NASA had grown too old and bureaucratic to develop itself. If humankind ever succeeds in populating the solar system, historians may conclude that the determination and resources of these men were largely responsible.Four distinctive personalitiesMusk, Bezos, Allen, and Branson are very different from one another, though each is undoubtedly brilliant in his own way, and at least three of the four are science fiction fans. Musk is the youngest of the lot—he was born in 1971—and by far the brashest and most impulsive. His company, SpaceX, has made the biggest splash to date and has generated by far the most revenue, but Musk has a bad habit of setting impossible deadlines for what he envisions as the principal goal of his efforts: building a city of one million people on Mars. He has also gotten his way at times only by suing NASA and the Pentagon. By contrast, Bezos and his company, Blue Origin, have been the tortoise to SpaceX's hare ("Slow is smooth and smooth is fast" as compared to "Head down. Plow through the line.") Bezos' highly secretive company has consistently been wary of publicizing its achievements. Both Musk and Bezos (born in 1964) envision traveling into space on their own rockets. Allen and Branson, who are older—born in 1953 and 1950, respectively—do not contemplate the trip to Mars that Musk hopes to take. Allen's part in the emergence of the new industry was for a time very limited by his fear that lives might be lost in the process; later, however, he staked out a unique project of his own: building a spaceplane larger than any airplane ever built. Branson, who is even more flamboyant than Musk, is all showman and marketer. His contribution was initially to promote the work of aircraft designer Burt Rutan, assuming the controlling interest in Rutan's company in place of Allen and only later getting into the business of building rockets, as Musk and Bezos have been doing for nearly two decades.Differing views of humanity's future in spaceElon Musk is single-mindedly focused on building a large city on Mars. Jeff Bezos does not share this focus. "'There's all kinds of interesting stuff you can do around the solar system,'" he told Davenport, "'but the thing that's going to move the needle for humanity the most is mining near-Earth objects and building manufacturing infrastructure in place . . . That's the big thing.'" Given the obstacles to living on the surface of Mars that I have learned through other reading, I tend to agree with Bezos.About the authorChristian Davenport is a reporter for the Washington Post, which is owned by Jeff Bezos. He acknowledges that it is "somewhat awkward writing a book about someone who could have you fired." However, his editor, Marty Baron, "has made it clear that [the Post] covers Jeff's companies as it would any other" and encouraged him to write the book. The Space Barons is Davenport's second.
The book is written as a chronological story, jumping between the 3 new space companies. Although I see myself as fairly knowledgeable in the history of these companies, there were lots of nuggets that were new to me. It is also well written in a way that also made the stories I already knew fascinating to revisit.
As the U.S. government goes on a wild goose chase for its next goal in space, NASA going around in circles as it complies, the private space industry is now moving in, and not a moment too soon. Since its last voyage to the Moon (Apollo 17) back in 1972, the U.S. and NASA has retreated to Earth orbit, with Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and the space shuttle. The shuttle was a noble experiment meant to cut costs and fly to space constantly, but alas, it turned out to be the most expensive and required constant maintenance after each flight. It turned out that in the end, a flight would cost $1.5 billion, and in its run, two ships were destroyed in flight, killing 14 astronauts.Enter the private space industries, that builds rockets from scratch, launches them at one tenth the cost, so far, and reuses the first stage. Virgin Galactic, being in the tourist business, launches their ships from an airplane at 35,000 feet all the way up to the beginning of suborbital space. This book focuses on three industrialists: Elon Musk, of SpaceX (and Tesla), Jeff Bezos of Blue Origin, and Richard Branson of Virgin Galactic. Other companies are mentioned, that started but were unsuccessful, but these three are the top space barons, for now.As stated, Richard Branson is focusing on space tourism with Virgin Galactic, but the two competitors are Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, and they are at it like dogs. SpaceX has mostly dominated the headlines, with its Dragon capsule supplying the International Space Station (ISS) and the first stage of the Falcon 9 returning to Earth to be reused, rather than be dumped into the ocean. They've also made the news with the Falcon Heavy, the new Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle, with the hope of eventually reaching Mars.Blue Origin is the quieter company, but they are competing closely with Space X on its own space taxi along with their reusable first stage rockets. These alone make Musk and Bezos fiercely compete and make the race interesting. There are even anecdotes on them being on stage with other executives, but these two avoiding each other like the plague. It's that fierce.Fortunately, it's good for the rest of humanity because the space launch business is finally being made available to the general public, with ever decreasing launch costs, and this alone will finally get the U.S. and all of humanity back into space, the next frontier, this time without an end.As for NASA, my recommendation for them is to completely get out of the launch business and save taxpayer money by leasing rockets from private companies at a fraction of the cost. After a 40 year delay, The Space Barons will help take humanity to the stars.Read the book. It's exciting and filled with tidbits of little known facts, some even amusing, having little to do with space itself (one even involving a gambling casino in Las Vegas), but you see the goings on in the space business.

From the Publisher
SWIMMING MADE EASY? YOU MUST BE KIDDING! Countless millions around the world would love to be able to swim better -- not fast necessarily -- just efficiently and comfortably. But, for virtually all, swimming well enough to enjoy all its benefits remains an elusive goal. Too bad, because swimming can be uniquely beneficial – a non-pounding, joint-friendly fitness activity that exercises the entire body and is suitable for everyone from toddlers to seniors. Being able to swim well is a truly valuable gift – and an essential life skill. But here's the universal Catch 22: Humans are "hard-wired" to be inefficient in the water. Everything we do instinctively tends to result in clumsy flailing and exhaustion. Swimming really well requires expert instruction; the better the instruction, the more beneficial and satisfying your swimming experience. But traditional swimming instruction is almost universally ineffective, because it focuses on "Human Swimming" technique -- arm and leg churning, which just reinforces our inbred inefficiencies. As a result, "average" swimmers can only watch "good" swimmers with envy, assuming it takes "talent" -- or endless training -- to swim that well. The message of Terry Laughlin's groundbreaking new book, Swimming Made Easy, is that swimming well is not a gift reserved for a talented few, but something attainable by everyone. As U.S. Masters Coach of the Year Emmett Hines wrote: "Laughlin makes the effortless grace of elite swimmers accessible to 'average' swimmers with simple, logical, proven steps that make fluid, powerful swimming a HABIT rather than a chance encounter." This is the most hopeful message that lap, fitness or competitive swimmers or triathletes have ever heard. Until Laughlin's first book, Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster and Easier (1996), all previous books on swimming mainly recycled the same set of misleading and mistaken "rules" about what matters in swimming. They made the improvement process intimidating and confusing, and ultimately resulted in little progress. Laughlin's first book was an instant hit with readers because, as they reported, "It makes sense," and "This really works; I can feel a difference from the first lap." Where previous books had mainly prescribed laps and more laps or presented swimming technique as something akin to rocket science, Laughlin advised human swimmers to think and swim more like fish. Fishlike Swimming, as he dubbed his method, focuses on avoiding struggle and turbulence by learning to be balanced and "slippery" and learning to swim fluently before trying to swim far or fast. Since publication of the previous Total Immersion book, Laughlin and his associates have taught TI techniques to swimmers of all ages and abilities, from 4 years to 80-plus, from non-swimmers to Olympians and everyone in between. At every level the response has been enthusiastic. As JoAnn Della Torre, a swim instructor in Naperville, IL, said, "You can always spot a TI swimmer by his or her grace and flow." The new book, Swimming Made Easy, details the insights and lessons from thousands of teaching and learning experiences and breaks new ground in making the swimming-improvement process even simpler and more direct. It also provides foolproof steps and learning sequences for learning to be Fishlike in any stroke. Here's a sampling of some of the paradigm-smashing information in SME: WHAT'S HOLDING YOU BACK? IT'S THE WATER, NOT YOUR FITNESS LEVEL. Lap-based approaches to swimming improvement are doomed to fail because, unless you're efficient to start with, more laps simply make your "struggling skills" more durable. If you can walk, run, or cycle a mile or more, you're fit enough to swim a similar distance. A lack of "swimming fitness" isn’t why you run out of gas. It’s the way your body interacts with water. Chapter 1 outlines five simple skills guaranteed to help you work with, not against, the water. HOW YOU CAN SWIM LIKE AN OLYMPIAN. Your instincts tell you to swim faster by churning your arms faster, but the world’s best swimmers are faster because they travel MUCH farther with every stroke than you do, not because they move their arms faster. Chapter 2 explains why Stroke Length is so advantageous and exactly what you can do to get it. NO MORE SINKING FEELING. Survival instincts make us want to stay on top of the water: As a result virtually every swimmer spends most of their energy trying not to sink. They think they’re pulling and kicking to move forward, but, in reality, their arms and legs are mainly occupied with fighting "that sinking feeling." But, the fact is, our bodies are supposed to sink.. Good balance and body position is the art of sinking in a horizontal position. Chapter 3 tells you how. SWIM "TALLER," SWIM EASIER. Most swimmers believe that "stroke technique" means "how you push water back with your hands." Want to swim better? Tweak your armstroke. Want to swim faster? Put more muscle into it. But, hydro-dynamically, the most important thing you can do with your hands is use them to lengthen your bodyline. A longer bodyline reduces drag. Chapter 4 explains how to swim "taller." DON'T FIGHT THE WATER, SLIP THROUGH IT. The gospel according to coaches says: "Swimming is hard." The price of speed is "more" and "harder." The gospel is wrong: The one non-negotiable, unavoidable, unyielding limiter of speed is resistance, not your capacity for work. No workout, wet or dry, can overcome the drag created when you try to bully your way through the water. But smart, strategic choices you make in how to "pierce" the water as you swim can reduce drag dramatically. Chapter 5 tells you exactly how to become more "slippery" and Chapters 7 and 8 explain how to generate effortless propulsion. A STRONG KICK IS ESSENTIAL. Swimming instructors always start by having you kick and kick and kick some more. No wonder everyone thinks a powerful kick is the key to swimming well -- and then spends countless hours on kickboards vainly pursuing it. In fact, kickboard training does nothing for your swimming, and the best kick is the one requiring the least effort. Chapter 8 explains how to integrate an effortless kick seamlessly with fluent body motion. These examples are drawn from just the first half the book. The second half offers a detailed plan, with progressive and sequential how-to steps, that will allow any individual to become their "own best swimming coach."

I used to hate lap swimming but now I love it, and it's because of this book. Laughlin has reinvented swim instruction. He's made it fun. He's made it easy. And the resulting stroke is heaven. The exercises do take some effort and dilligence to master. But if you go slow don't move on until you have mastered each exercise, as instructed, you'll open up a whole new world of swimming enjoyment. I often feel like I'm flying in the water. This former water buffalo now swims like a fish.Note: there's a brand new Total Immersion book being touted on the TI website, which I haven't read. You may want to look into that, instead. Also, some reviews and TI suggest the DVD as the best method, but that wasn't the case for me. In my case, it was the clear, detailed instructions in the book that made it happen.
I have been a coach for several years and this book really hit home. I really enjoyed learning about the balance of our bodies in the water and how we can better maneuver ourselves thru the h2o. Highly recommend this book for any level of swimmer and/or coach. I will definitely use these techniques in practice for my swimmers and even with myself (masters swimmer).
Fantastic! It has never been easier to change my swimming or teach my adult lessons or swim team kids.
good information and motivating
....Was wanting the book shown in the picture, but received an earlier edition. Nothing wrong with it, but the purchase was to replace a lost borrowed book.
This is a good book for the beginning swimmer, but I would recommend "Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier" over this book. It is by the same author, Terry Laughlin.
I took a TI weekend work shop and bought the book. The book has all the priceless information I learnt during the work shop that will help you find your balance in the water and be more fish like when swimming. It's a handy book that you will refer back to over and over again to become a better swimmer. But of course nothing can replace the hours of practice of what you will learn from this book.
Great book!

As seems perpetually the case with McGuire's work, this book was a fun horror-in-the-woods romp with a side of Cryptids, while simultaneously ensuring that her characters show the kind of diversity the "real world" actually holds.Sidebar: One of the things I love best about McGuire's writing is that her characters run the FULL gamut of representation. She writes racially-, sexually-, *biologically*-, and gender-diverse characters into her books in a way that never feels like tokenism, and seldom has anything to do with the plot - unless she's calling out discriminations for the garbage that they are, and showing, through her excellent characterizations, the kind of pain and damage inflicted on people through hate and fear.Antimony's latest contretemps with the Crossroads was fun, intense at times, and followed gleefully the northeastern/new englander-style horror-in-the-woods roadmaps, while still continuing McGuire's worldbuilding from both the InCryptid series and the Ghost Roads books. If there was any weak point to this at all, I think it was the almost sidebar-nature appearance of a member of "The Covenant", which in previous books has been cause for all the conflict & horror to descend at mere mention. Here, however, in the face of the Crossroads, the Covenant seems heavily diminished as a horrific entity. All in all, as is always the case, fully worth the pre-order and will read again. :)
The cornfields were a slow start, the rest of the book is a slam dunk for me, exceeding my expectations.Antimony Price is in way over her head. She is being hunted by a cult that can track her anywhere, and she has made a bad deal with a supernatural force that is about to come due. The one thing that she’s got going for her is her friends, and wow does she have some great friends. I really didn’t like Antimony much when she was introduced many books ago. However she has grown on me, or possibly just grown up. Here she puts it all on the line for her family, both biological and chosen. And you can’t help loving her for that.
Another great installment. I've really come to like Antimony Price over the course of these last three books, and of course Sam as well. Seanan's world-building is phenomenal, but the way she's build the Price family tree is equally as impressive. The pacing of this one is spot-on as well: fast enough, with enough twists, to keep things interesting, slow enough to have Annie's thoughts about her family tree and relationships feel like they're just tangential info-dumps.And the extra novella was a fun, if at times heart-wrenching, read as well.
What a satisfying ending (for now) of the trials of Annie Price! I was at a point where I really needed something fun to read. I can’t think of any series that’s more fun to read than the InCryptid books. Great stories. Great characters, some deliciously not human. Great humor. If you’re reading the series already, you definitely won’t be disappointed in this book. But you already knew that. If you’re not reading the series you’re missing a lot of fun.
As always, this was a very well written tale, nice twists & turns in the plotting. The first few pages take a little bit of necessary "set-up" time - esp for those new to the series. After that, things go very nicely - reader interest is assured.I love this series - esp for the great imagination of the author" - her ability to create interesting characters, - great plotting - and her ability to make the unusual so very possible. My only regret, is that the mice are not in this story (necessary, as explained in the previous story of "Annie") - but I'm sure they'll be back as the series continues.
The adventurous Price family remains, as always, in the bizarre spectrum of life in general. Reading one of their quests requires compiling so many improbable and sometimes contradictory into single sentences that, after awhile, it seems commonplace. This universe is wildly imaginative and fun to immerse yourself in. Annie develops by leaps and bounds over the course of her time in the limelight. I look forward with great anticipation to the next book to see what the family gets up to next.
Loved it! This was the best Antimony book so far. She's growing up without losing her snark...I was slightly disappointed to find a preview instead of more book at the end, but that's publishers for you. Anyway I really liked the crossroads issue and how it was solved.
While I will be sad to lose Antimony as the narrator I am super excited for Sarah books. This one was a great ending and I really didn't expect it to go the way it did. No spoilers from me, except to say I want a road trip novella please.Ok mild spoiler for the story at the endI want a story about how the nice got email. Pretty please. Do they have a smart phone? A laptop? I have so many questions

Review
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR TRAVELING WITH GHOSTS BY SHANNON LEONE FOWLER "Fowler shows none of the self-aggrandizement that saturates many memoirs, and she lived a far more interesting life — before and after Sean’s death — than do many who write about theirs. Her story — rich, unblinking and adroitly told — is one of strength, of getting past but not getting over. Few would choose the approach Fowler took to kick-start healing. But hers is a thought-provoking journey that she generously shares." —USA Today “Fowler has turned her devastating, beautiful, honest, and personal story into something universal. Akin to Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, her book will appeal to globetrotters and readers of hopeful stories chronicling grief and recovery.” —Booklist (starred review) “Fowler’s moving account traces her grief. … [A] nicely written and informative journey on the path to healing.” —Publishers Weekly “A courageous and finely crafted account soaked in tears of love and loss.” —Kirkus Reviews "[An] intensely personal and appealing memoir. ... Bring along a world map, set aside everything you know about healing from heartbreaking loss, and have yourself an unforgettable read." —Bookpage "Raw. ... Powerful. ... Redemptive." —Book Riot “In her deft and lovely debut, the memoir Traveling with Ghosts, Fowler tells [this] wrenching story with grace and fortitude. Just as Fowler’s difficult path after Sean’s death yields lessons about survival and resilience, her friendship with Anat and Talia, which continues to this day, yields its own lessons, of a kindness so extraordinary that it’s nearly as affecting as the tragedy at the book’s center.” —Christian Science Monitor “Set against an exotic backdrop of distant lands, Shannon Leone Fowler’s memoir, Traveling with Ghosts, is a heartbreaking story about the randomness of tragedy told with great courage and tenacity.” —Ruth Ozeki, New York Times bestselling author of A Tale for the Time Being “A soul-searching journey to reclaim the heart, Traveling with Ghosts is one of the best travel memoirs this year!” —Andrew X. Pham, author of Catfish and Mandala and The Eaves of Heaven “Traveling with Ghosts is a beautiful, haunting, heartbreaking memoir, made luminous by Shannon Fowler's obvious love of the natural world, her amazing eye for detail in exotic locales, and her depth and courage in the face of loss. I recommend this with all my heart.” —Dan Chaon, bestselling author of Await Your Reply and Ill Will “Shannon Fowler’s vivid tale of love and loss moved me deeply. She is a traveler who seeks healing in the most unlikely destinations, and who tells her remarkable story with camera-like precision rather than platitudes. Her book is a stirring tribute to a beloved fellow traveler, and a reflection of her own abundant courage.” —Nancy Horan, New York Times bestselling author of Loving Frank "Shannon Leone Fowler journeys courageously behind the clichés to explore how nations, cultures, and above all, individuals, grapple with loss; a vivid, compelling and deeply affecting memoir." —Manil Suri, New York Times bestselling author of The Age of Shiva and The Death of Vishnu “Shannon Fowler’s restlessness in the face of her unimaginable loss makes the reader feel her battered Lonely Planet travel guide was aptly named. Like Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, Fowler makes us feel that a hero’s journey is our only hope for surviving grief. Traveling with Ghosts is a brave and necessary record of love, as beautiful as it is heartbreaking.” --Ann Patchett, New York Times bestselling author of Bel Canto and State of Wonder “In this vital and compelling memoir, Shannon Fowler documents the sudden death of her fiancé and the year of flight that follows. Traveling with Ghosts teaches us how to reconcile ourselves with the world once the person we love is no longer in it. This is a book about the kindness of strangers, the consolation of unknown places, and the way that the world can be bright and dark, wide and narrow, all at the same time.” ––Kelly Link, Pulitzer Prize-nominated author of Get in Trouble “This beautifully written, wonderfully engrossing book makes real the stubborn process by which we come to accept loss. Shannon Leone Fowler has made a wonderful gift of her hard won insights, and comes to a place of compassion that resonates deeply for me. I am grateful for this book. I cannot wait to give it to people I love.” ––Dorothy Allison, critically-acclaimed author of Bastard out of Carolina "Powerful and heartbreaking, Traveling with Ghosts, is beautifully written and emotionally compelling. It is Shannon Leone Fowler's journey of survival and healing after the tragic and unexpected death of her fiancé. Battling grief with grief, she travels alone through devastated Eastern European countries, only to find her life held together by the rawness of place and the unexpected kindness of strangers. A gorgeous book to be read and savored." —Gail Tsukiyama, bestselling author of The Samurai’s Garden and A Hundred Flowers “After witnessing the senseless death of her fiancé, Shannon Fowler sets out on an unforgettable journey of reckoning, paying tribute to her young man’s adventurous soul while trying to make sense of the rest of her life without him. Fowler’s voice is powerful and searching, and the book left me deeply moved, not only by her courage, but by that of all the citizens of the devastated landscapes to which she so beautifully bears witness.” —Elizabeth McKenzie, bestselling author of The Portable Veblen "In Traveling with Ghosts Shannon Leone Fowler has created a searing memoir that recounts the moment her life was shattered by the death of her fiancé, young Australian Sean Reilly, and the months afterward as she stumbles around the war torn and poverty stricken countries of Eastern Europe trying to find a nonexistent balm to ease her grief. Coping as best she can with the terrible knowledge that Sean was just one of a number of people who swam in the Thailand ocean having never been warned that the most venomous creature on earth was there, Shannon celebrates in Traveling with Ghosts the life she had with Sean, the love they shared, and the future they planned. Rich with descriptions of place, beautifully constructed with a chronology that allows the reader to know the Sean that she knew, portrayed with honesty and dignity, Traveling with Ghosts celebrates a life cut short, a love never given a chance to grow, and a process of recovery bravely illustrating that while life after tragedy goes on, the chilly fingers of grief touch us in a way that mark us forever." —Elizabeth George, New York Times bestselling author of A Banquet of Consequences and A Great Deliverance “Shannon Fowler’s remarkable memoir feels as if it’s as intricate and deep as memory itself. It’s a privilege to be in her company as she travels to harrowing cities the world over, and more harrowing, to the mysterious interior realm, the country of grief. The comforts she finds there are without sentiment and profoundly moving.” ––Jane Hamilton, New York Times bestselling author of A Map of the World and The Excellent Lombards “A stunningly wise, thoughtful, and thought-provoking ‘survival map’ of a memoir…Drawing from journals of her travels before and after the sudden death of her fiancé, Shannon Leone Fowler shares insights into life, love, and grieving in prose that is raw and unsentimental, and yet spills over with love. Put it on the shelf somewhere between Eat, Pray, Love and The Year of Magical Thinking. Traveling with Ghosts made me laugh out loud, and it broke my heart. In its unforgettable final pages, it did both at once, and, as only the very finest books do, its power over me grows rather than fades.” ––Meg Waite Clayton, bestselling author of The Wednesday Sisters

Traveling with Ghosts by Shannon Leone Fowler is an incredibly powerful and haunting memoir, a deeply personal story of love and loss that I found hard to put down and couldn’t wait to go back to – something that may sound a little strange to say about someone else’s harrowing experiences (the tragic death of her fiancé, her struggle with the way friends and family dealt with her loss, and her physical and emotional journey through countries and cultures that approach grief differently), but this is a book with an immediate, universal appeal. This comes not just from the themes covered, but also the author’s ability to grab the reader’s attention from the opening line and to keep that attention and interest up to the final word through very well-honed prose (this is a writer with a real talent for painting vivid pictures), and the way the story is told: the complex narrative is made of various flashbacks that could have been clumsy or confusing in less skilled hands, but the flow between present, recent past and older, childhood memories is in fact seamless: it is as if you were in the author’s head, with her thoughts – yet this is no stream of consciousness, there is a strong drive and logic to the construction, but effortless and natural. It works remarkably well, it helps to emphasize that the journey through grief is far from linear. This book made me cry, it made me laugh at times, but mainly, it made me think. A lot. Read it.
I read this astonishing memoir in one sitting - I couldn’t put it down. Fowler doesn’t sugarcoat or shy away from the awfulness of death, and her words stayed with me long after I finished the last page. I found myself wanting to travel to the places she described, and eat the food she was trying there. It’s a soul-searching journey about grief, survival, nature, chance, luck, loss and history. To anyone who’s ever lost someone, or knows someone who has – read this book!
A wonderful memoir, that reminds us to love as many moments with our loved ones as possible. But also shows us that Americans need to learn to treat death as it is, talk about it, face it front first, and hold each others hands when confronted with it. It is also an amazing story about how the rest of the work deals with death, and gives us a way forward.
This is a beautiful book, deep with love and loss and being in the world. Fowler's attention to detail brings us with her as she experiences the terrible circumstances of her fiance's death and her attempts to re-balance herself in the wider, not always safe, world. Love and loss and friendship all rendered in language rich with emotion and description. In rendering such specific and generous details, she also demonstrates the value of travelers keeping a journal of their journey, for their own sake, and in Fowler's case, for ours. I found this book brave and personal and painful to read, but ultimately fulfilling. We go on.
Normally, the best compliment you can give to any author is something along the lines of “I couldn’t put it down.†I can’t say that about Traveling with Ghosts by Shannon Leone Fowler. Instead, I say this book is so powerful, I had to put it down every 15 or 20 minutes. I needed to take time to catch my breath, slow my heartbeat, and reflect on what I’d just read. This memoir deals with grief and loss. Fowler puts us inside her head and we see the world as she does. We feel the emptiness, the despondency, and the guilt she felt when her fiancé died on a Thai beach. We feel, too, the outrage at the Thai authorities who knew of the danger and did nothing about it lest tourism suffer. Our hearts go out in gratitude to the two Israeli women, all too accustomed to dealing with death, who help Fowler come back to life. There are no easy answers provided in the book. Fowler’s sense of loss does not seem to attenuate, but her ability to accommodate herself to it does grow.
I finished this book in two sittings. The author intersperses memory with her loved one with narratives of travelling to different countries, some of which I also had visited, but many I had not. In an age where media tells women they should be afraid and are in need of protection, it was refreshing to read about a woman who charted her own course, confronted her past by confronting herself, and learned survival from her choice of destinations, many of which were poor, war-torn, and rebuilding. Highly recommend.
Perfectly written. A really hard story to tell. I lost three of my best friends during a field trip (I am also a biologist). The book made me feel a lot, I was sad, angry and meditating about life. I remebered losing my friends and how we had to recover. I spent my days at work thinking about Eastern Europe and the lessons she was learning. I searched information about the wars, I learned about history. I understood her passion for her job, but also how she didnt want to go back to it. I highly recommend it
Brilliantly constructed and poetically written. For anyone who has ever lost someone (which is just about everyone) this memoir is about the journeys we undergo trying to come to grips with grief. Powerful and moving.
