Such a fun book that we can use every year since there are different levels of difficulty for each project! So the fun never stops! I am able to do this with my boys now and I know the schools ask them to build these traps as a project to bring in. This book is going to perfect to pull out when that time comes! My 4 year old and I had so much fun doing this together this year!

An important book to anyone interested in Oriental rugs. Well written with excellent color plates. Try and purchase the 1992 edition used. The color plates are more accurate. The 2016 edition is the exact same book - no updates- but smaller print and pages with less accurate color plates. The earlier edition is much preferred.

Jim does tend to put emphasis on his own particular favorite types of rugs such as Persian tribal rug weaving so know that it is not a comprehensive guide. This in no way lessens the importance of this book. Good as a coffee table book for anyone who appreciates beauty as well as must have for the rug aficionado.

While the illustrations are excellent, the actual content leaves much to be desired. The writing style is very stilted and in an attempt to “simplify†the stories or modify them for kids it loses any real depth to the stories. As well as completely re-writing some of the stories, an example being Medusa, now I get that you may not want to get into Poseidon raping her in Athena’s temple, leading to Athena punishing her, but the idea of Poseidon looking at her and saying weird things like she had poisonous locks and that was good, scaly skin and that was good, and so on then falling asleep in her arms is just kinda weird. If you want pretty pictures and a lazy intro to Greek myths it is fine, if you want the real stories move on.
This book consists of 25 biographical sketches of figures from Greek Mythology. It’s one of those books that grew on me, and the reason it grew on me was a few of the chapters toward the end were engaging, such as those about Heracles, Jason, and Helen. This also means that the number of stars I gave it is fairly meaningless. It was in no danger of getting 5 stars nor 1, but could’ve been anywhere in between at various points in my reading.The problem with the book is that the unit of interest isn’t the myth, i.e. not the story, but rather the mythical figure, the various gods and heroes of ancient Greece. Because of this organization, some of the chapters have a tight and memorable story, such as that of Heracles and his 12 labors, while others are just piles of genealogical facts mixed with odd mythical happenings (e.g. who burst from whose forehead) and tossed with that mythical figure’s bit parts in larger myths. The book is a good, solid reference book for schoolkids doing research on Greek Mythology, but much of it’s not very engaging to read.The graphics are beautiful and colorful, if a bit artsy (not always instantaneously clear in subject.) There are maps, a timeline describing happenings of ancient Greece -- real and mythical, a bibliography, and a quick guide to the characters that would make more sense if the book wasn’t a collection of relatively brief biographical sketches to begin with (but repetition has its merits, particularly for children.)If you’re looking for a collection of biographies of mythical Greeks (i.e. a reference for children,) then this is a good book for you. If you’re looking to get your kids intrigued by the Greek myths, then you might want to shop around. Put another way, if you’re looking for a version of what Neil Gaiman did with this “Norse Mythology,†only for the Greeks, this isn’t it.
I was really disappointed after reading this book. The writing style is unpleasant and jumps around quite a bit, making it hard to keep track of anything. Most of the myths are actually only descriptions of the god's births and parentage. A number of these myths are inaccurate as well, which I found to be the most disappointing aspect of the book. I wouldn't even recommend this to people just starting out, it is not interesting to read and the author seems more interested in being pc than staying true to the actual mythology. All in all a waste of time and money.
Absolutely in love with this book, the illustrations are great!The book made in the way that will be interesting for both a child and an adult.Stories are pretty short (2 pages with small illustrations for each character) what makes it easy to read without losing attention.
Simply LOVE IT! The binding, the artwork, the tales, the quality of the paper.. every detail of this book makes it wonderful! I was looking for a book like this since it's perfect for children. It makes it fun for them to read. Growing up my favorite unit in history was Greek mythology. I looked for a basic Greek mythology book for what seems like forever now because I was holding out for a book with really good illustrations and I found that in this book. The stories are short and to the point without feeling rushed and the stories are in order. Really well done!

I love Peanuts and this day-to-day calendar is so cute. I always give this as a Christmas gift to my mother. She will save each calendar page for me so I can read the adventures of the Peanuts gang. I also recycle each page by using it as scratch paper.
This calendar has become an annual tradition for me. As always, it is in full color with a daily comic as well as some sort of mentally stimulating content on the back of the page (brainteasers, Sudoku, this day in history, letter searches, trivia, etc... lots of goodies). As Page-A-Day type calendars go, this one is consistently high quality with a sturdy stand that locks properly, good quality paper that tears cleanly, and good selection of the featured Peanuts comic strips... in all the years I've been buying these, I can't recall ever seeing a repeated strip. If you love good ol' Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus and Lucy, and the rest of the gang, this calendar belongs on your desk!

The pictures in this small book were a decent selection and sharpness--no complaints. The commentary offered some context, albeit distracting and unclear at times. Here's an example of Emmerling's editorializing: "Basquiat's work thus documents the progressive construction of the artist's discordant identity, of a man grappling with the reality that he could make little use of the patterns available to him--either of his father's existence as an accountant who adopted the ideals of the white middle class, or the ghetto kid attitude of the graffiti sprayer" (89). How did Basquiat "make little use of the patterns available to him"? He has over 2000 works of art. How did his father "adopt the ideals of the white middle class"? What does that even mean? And what is a "ghetto kid attitude"? There are more examples of Emmerling not explaining or citing his claims, many of which involve Emmerling playing up the "racist" attitudes of collectors and how Basquiat was a victim.
They clearly didn’t front the copywrite money for his better pieces. Though I’m sure it would have been incredibly expensive..

I did not think I could ever be attracted to the same sex. Then I read this book and it made me start to look at the world around me differently. When I read IMRU I was just like Holland and had no clue what it meant, but it made me want to keep reading and find out. I think this is a great book for young teens, especially young teens questioning their sexuality.One thing I had an issue with was how over the top CeCe is about her sexuality. I don't think anyone I know would have ever been that comfortable in high school to be that open and over the top.
It was alright. Like most lesbian media. Maybe a little better than most of the crud that is out there. Still leaves something to be desired, definitely. The author did a good job of building the central relationship on the story, you can really feel and relate to that falling-in-love-for-the-first-time feeling. She does a great job of that actually: the feelings and the build up and the cute little relationship between the two. I found myself getting butterflies at certain points. And the story is realistic, and probably hit close to home for may readers and their experience with coming out, and the relationships it effected... it definitely doesn't sugarcoat that aspect of it. But again, the book left something to be desired. I (and probably some of you) would love to see a heroine of a unique story who just happened to be (in addition to many other cool, bad ass, sad, interesting, detailed, awesome things) in love with a woman. Like how Harry Potter has this awesome story and destiny and all these adventures and this purpose... and just happens to like girls, and have a romance with one or two as a side plot every once in while.Anyway, a girl can dream. Out of all our options, especially if you are a teen girl (I am in my 20s), this will suffice. It's just okay though.
I feel that our world increasingly divides itself more and more. Everybody thinks their group's trials and tribulations are unique, that they suffer differently, than other groups. Sure everybody's life faces different challenges. However when we take the time to walk a mile in someone else's shoes, we realise no one is really that far apart. In the end we all need the same things.
Not as classic as Annie on My Mind, and I think that's because the fallout from "keeping you a secret" isn't fully explored. Like things are happening, but we never really get the depth of the MCs' feelings on the events. It's also hard to imagine this relationship continuing after the end of the book. The ending felt a bit forced.
I absolutely loved the book! The characters were rich with personality and it was impossible not to become wrapped up in Holland's amazing story. I could really identify with the emotional turbulence involved with Holland's coming out as a lesbian even though I'm a hetero male. Julie Anne Peters did an amazing job of portraying the hardships so that even people who are not in Holland's position could really feel the weight of the crisis and feel deeply for her. Truly great story, I will be looking for more from this author in the future!
I personally loved Keeping You a Secret, and found it to be a reasonable depiction of a teenage girl coming to grips with her sexuality, dealing with family/school, and falling in love. Maybe it's just because I live in the Bible Belt, but I didn't think that Holland's mom and friends' reactions to her coming out were unrealistic. Though coming out will obviously not play out like this for every lgbt teen, it does happen to a sizable minority, hence the higher homelessness/displacement rates among lgbt teens. And whether or not you think CeCe & Holland have a healthy relationship, I think it's a pretty accurate description of what teen romances tend towards, especially when you consider that CeCe is the first person whom Holland feels this way towards. There are plenty of teenage couples who are convinced that they will be together forever, but who realistically will end up breaking up (actually, this holds true for relationships between people of all ages--have you seen the divorce statistics recently?). As for the people criticizing Holland's decision not to go to Stanford, I think that is the most shallow reason you could possibly not like the book. I know that we all have this beautiful picture in our head that everyone who is talented enough can get whatever financial aid they need to go to any college they can get into, but as a current college student, I can comfortably say that this is not anywhere near reality. In addition, going to an Ivy league school was always something Holland's mom wanted, but that Holland felt pretty lukewarm on. And considering that Holland had no idea what she wanted to do with her life (which, I'd like to add, is once again pretty common in eighteen year olds) but was leaning towards art or elementary education or something along those lines, she hardly needed an Ivy League education.
This is an outstanding story. The writing is second to none, emotions are so raw they are palpable. My biggest let down was the abrupt ending, hence four stars instead of five.I guess this is one of those stories where the reader gets to decide what becomes of the characters.
