When I began playing the harmonica about a month ago I purchased numerous instruction books along with taking lessons on line. I found this publication, "Instant Harmonica" by Patrick Byrne, to be very helpful. It covered the subject matter in a simple and straight forward manner. It began by explaining that the harmonica is a real musical instrument and gave tips on keeping your harmonica clean. It went on to show how to hold and harmonica, breathing and how to read harmonica music. The importance of tones and rhythm were also covered in this text.As a beginner playing the harmonica it is important for the practice songs to also have the words. This guide had the song notes, tabs and words, which made it easy to learn some of the common beginners songs. Some of these included: Oh! Susanna, Kumbaya, Amazing Grace, which is one of my favorites, Camp town Races, Frankie and Johnny, On Top of Old Smoky, Blow the man down, Home on the range and numerous other song tabs. Unlike a couple of harmonica song and instruction publications I purchased, this one covered the topic without getting bogged down in too many technical details. The important thing emphasized is to practice, practice, practice with your harmonica, which I have been doing every day.For anyone who is considering learning to play the harmonica, this guide along with some formal instruction is an excellent combination. Got this and the Swan (Chinese) Harmonica for a bday gift. The Harmonica is lousy so we returned that for a Suzuki Folk master. The book is great and lots of good songs in it. The gift was very well received.

It's a good primer - I got this for my son and I. I've been playing for 30 years but I wanted a copy of the same book so I got 2 - he can tell me what page he's on, problems, etc...It's good instruction - makes it easy. But the song selection is sorta dated. lol. I'm 46 and I barely have heard a lot of these. It would be better if it had more campfire classics and modern songs / riffs to keep the next generation interested.
This book is excellent, I was playing tunes shortly after I received the book, they were beginner tunes but still I made clear music from my Harmonica Very satisfied with this beginners instruction book.
Definitely helps in learning the Harmonica...takes much practice though as does any music instrument you learn. Satisfied with this book.
This book won't rust, bust, or fall apart, I hope. All seriousness aside, my dogs did try to sing with me, and they still do. My whole family is using the book to learn the harmonica, even though I play as softly as I can, the dogs still try to sing with me. My daughter says that I'm hurting their ears. I don't think so.

I found this book online and was not even aware that Agatha Christie had written something like this. A murder mystery that was very fast paced and interesting.
“And Then There Were None†is a thrilling murder mystery written by Agatha Christie. When ten people are invited to Soldier Island by a mysterious character, U. N. Owen, the guests find themselves in a dangerous situation as they watch each other get picked off one by one according to an old nursery rhyme. The novel keeps you guessing, and chances are you won’t know who the murderer is until the last page of the book. Although I enjoyed reading “And Then There Were Noneâ€, it was quite hard to motivate myself to get through the first 40 or so pages. The book begins by describing the characters, which is common in books that were written in the 1930’s. It becomes a lengthy process considering the large amount there are, and was my least favorite part of the book. Not that the old style is bad, but it really shines through considering the first line of the book talks about Mr. Justice Wargrave "In the corner of a first-class smoking carriage" on a train. Aside from that, the book was partly predictable. When and how the murders will occur is easy to guess, but who will die and who did it is up in the air, keeping the mystery present. All in all, the cons are not a reason to forgo reading this book. Lastly, the entire book and murder is psychotic, but in an intriguing way. I was disturbed by the end of the book, only because some of the murders and the plan behind them was simply insane. Having said that, Agatha Christie used this to create another of her thrilling mysteries. I would recommend this book, and the advice I would give to a reader is don’t be discouraged as a result of the beginning. Push through the first few sections, and you’ll find a whole new situation which moves much more quickly.
Having read everything she had written, I've always debated as to which of Agatha Christie's works tops my list. For a while it was "ABC Murders". But, having re-read "And Then There Were None," I came to a conclusion that there's simply nothing else like it, and it tops my list. This novel once again proves that Christie was one of the best writers of the 20th century. It is so much more than just a "mystery" novel - it has it all: amazing character development, fabulous use of English language, top-notch plot, and knock-your-socks-off ending. One can debate as to whether or not this novel was intended to be "solved" by the reader, but at some point it becomes irrelevant. The originality of this novel is nothing short of stunning! No other "mystery" novel, in my opinion, tops this in terms of psychology, character development, and literary style. An amazing piece written by an amazing writer! In terms of pure "mystery," "ABC Murders" still tops my list, but I consider "And Then There Were None" to be the finest novel Christie has ever written. The only issue I have with this particular edition is: Political Correctness once again surfaces! It substitutes "soldiers" for "indians"!! Not that it makes much difference, but really....... for crying' out loud: GROW UP!!!!!!!!
Having just finished my first Agatha Christie novel, I had to ask myself what in the world was I waiting for. This book is a delightful read. It is no wonder that the author has sold more than a billion books worldwide. This book was just plain fun to read. Anyone who has ever seen himself as a amateur detective or who is a big fan of whodunits will be kept guessing at every turn. And the way that the bad guy (or gal) is revealed to the reader in a truly unique way. Go away John Sandford. Hang it up James Patterson. If you have read one you have read them all. I think that I am going to book passage on the Orient Express.
Marvelous. I came into this a bonafide Agatha Christie virgin and came out an addict. What a fun, quick-paced read! The characters were clear, and often many levels deeper (and far more sinister) than they appear. Out of the 10 souls stuck on Soldier Island, I did initially guess correctly the mastermind -- but Christie is sooo good at seeding doubt. "Oh, this guy would be logically the murderer. You know who's even more likely? THIS guy."One of my favorite bits about this well-written whodunnit? The Vera/Philip relationship. Two, young guests on Soldier Island who clearly have some attraction to one another. Christie sets up little hints until she turns it on its head and reminds both characters, "Oh yeah, either one of you could be a megalomaniacal murderer." Screw romance. Romance is dead. Christie is dedicated in this book to just making some macabre fun.
Very, very clever! So clever that I may read it again some day even though I know the ending, or actually BECAUSE I know the ending and want to read once again how Agatha Christie adroitly executed the plot.Well written and enjoyable.I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. The only reason I didn't give it five is because it wasn't emotionally satisfying. I didn't connect with the characters and feel their fear as I have in other mysteries, but intellectually it was extremely satisfying.

The cover says it is about 'on the trail of Agatha Christie' and I found it had very little that one doesn't all ready know from her own autobiography. Few and far accounts on Agatha - it took pages and pages before it said anything about her.It is mostly a political and personal historical views on Iraq, Turkey and their towns. It is all over the place w/archaeological tidbits, political and cultural views, personal anecdotes, etc - anything but Agatha facts and stories. It took me forever to read this and even purchased it in Kindle form so I could do searches for the word "Agatha".Don't bother w/this this one - as you can get more information from her own books. I don't feel I wasted my money but it did waste my time.
To quote from GEOGRAPHICAL MAGAZINE, "Eames laces the book with Christie trivia and a certain sly wit. His descriptions of the people he meets and the places he visited are both vivid and perceptive... THE 8:55 TO BAGHDAD is a thoroughly enjoyable read that combines an Agatha-centric travelogue with a thought-provoking journey through a benighted land."Treading lightly throughout this work is Eames' own spiritual quest. Some have noted the book's weak ending and it is rather like the last gasp of an arriving steam locomotive. Since the inspiration for the book occured during an earlier trip that included Aleppo, perhaps Eames, an atheist, could have ended the book with the advice--really a parting blessing--that he received in Konya from Alp Aslan, a Muslim. "Go," he said, "write a travel book in search of the miracle of creation. Go looking for God." (P. 211) However, such an ending would have required that Eames double-back at the conclusion of his present journey--an arduous and awkward maneuver he was not prepared to make at present--either in writing or in life.

From the enticing title (although I have never read her popular novels) to the book jacket blub that the author evidences a "sly wit" in his account of a journey through tense times, to a targeted Iraq, straight into a quote: If you cannot find Osama, Bomb Iraq If the markets are a drama, Bomb Iraq If the terrorists are frisky Pakistan is looking shifty North Korea is too risky, Bomb Iraq.Or from a fellow train traveler in rural Turkey about President Bush:"You have traveled. I have traveled. We understand each other. But President Bush? Has he traveled? What is that expression--travel broadens the mind?" Eames' humour and the selections he chooses to write of, are far from sly!Eames a British journalist recounts his travels by train, ferry and bus from London to Baghdad and onto Ur as replicates the journey that Agatha Christie took back in 1928, but with far more difficulty as this is in the age of Desert Storm and the Axis of Evil. Never mind, he only gets bombed once, and that by his "own side", at the conclusion of his quest in the area of the (claimed) original site of the "Garden of Eden". He travels partly on the famed Orient Express with a cast of characters he suspects of being invented for his book's purpose by Agatha Christy herself. He notes that the "Swiss train track-men who walk the length of the `consist', tapping wheels, keep their eyes firmly on their task. To raise the gaze to window level," he says,"would have risked invading the privacy of a camp hairdresser touching up his highlights or a bouffant old goat touching up his African princess."He becomes far more serious about the openness and genuine hospitality of the Iraq people at the conclusion of his adventure, noting the warmth and friendliness, mixed with caution and fear of Sadam's constant presence. I think the author inserted himself far too often in this account of traveling the routes Agatha Christie traveled. He includes some of Agatha Christie's biography but adds nothing new to already published information. He also includes some history of lands through which he traveled but did not, for me, provide any insight into why there is so much conflict there today. Generally an adequate accounting of what has happened to these railroad routes in the years since Agatha Christie's day but not an inspiring travel book.
I bought this book for my Mum because she loves Christie and ended up reading it myself. I was especially taken by the sections in Eastern Europe and Iraq. This book introduced me to places in geography and history that I had not been to before and was a pleasant and thought-provoking read.
A wonderful book and it arrived on time and very well packed. I would highly recommend the book as it was recommended to me! Thank you also for the excellent service!

Rosenberg's challenge, to communicate not only the complex ideas behind Brown's project but then to deliver descriptions of her dances, is a monumental task of exposition. Rosenberg more than steps up to that challenge. Brown operated in one of the most dynamic arenas that American art has known - Rosenberg draws Brown's context out richly enough to elicit deep feelings of nostalgia for an era of seemingly unlimited possibility. In that sense, this book is highly motivating. I highly recommend this book.
A must have for those students of movement.

This is a pretty comprehensive biography of one of my favorite singers/composers of all time. I love Elton John! There isn't a whole lot of information you wouldn't already know if you have always been an Elton John fan but it's certainly well written and informative. This book gives you a pretty good inside view into John's life, from his humble beginnings to the spectacular excesses of his later career. It ends before he has children, I would've loved to hear about his feelings regarding how his life has changed because of his children but that would be my only complaint in an otherwise well researched book.
I was looking forward to reading this book; however, it was disappointing. Besides all the minute details that I could have done without, there were many transposed words and other errors. One in particular was mentioning two people and then using a pronoun later when referring to one of those two people, except the reader does not know which one!
David Buckley is the author of the best David Bowie biography ever, "Strange Fascination", so I was ecstatic when I learned he had written a book on Elton John. But there is a difference here. What made the Bowie book so special was the fact that Buckley was a long-time fan, so the knowledge he had accumulated over the years gave him a wide edge over the competition. In the case of this new book, he admits to not following Elton's career since the beginning, so now David Buckley has become a biographer by trade. Furthermore, the definitive Elton John biography has already been written by Philip Norman. So Buckley mentions Norman's book whenever any piece of information is taken from it (it would be foolish not to do it, as Norman uncovered new ground in many aspects), but adds a great deal of information obtained by himself. This book is especially strong on Elton's brief stint with Gary Osborne as his lyricist, which is a period of Elton's career which is generally overlooked by most biographies and documentaries. Gary contributed a foreword, so it's clear that he gave his full cooperation. All in all, this is a pleasant read and a nice complement to Norman's book. Elton John fans will not be disappointed.
I bought this expecting a look into Elton John's life up to now. It turns out the author didn't know Elton John at all, and just talked to people who worked with him. It isn't a look into Elton John's life as much as it is a look at what was going on when each album was made. So it really wasn't what I wanted it to be, but that said, I still enjoyed the book.
In this fascinating biography Mr. Buckley delves into the man behind the music without reverting to gossip and tabloid theatrics. Although there are a few moments in this book where Buckley allows himself to falter into such territory (an unseemly discussion of anagrams with Elton's name for example) overall the text focuses on the music of Elton John and how it came to be shaped and formed.After reading this text I have a new appreciation for the longevity of Elton's career and music, and also for Mr. Buckley's nice ability for demonstrating how a long career in the music world unfolds and is shaped by the personality, and demons, of the singer.Although this is an unauthorized biography Mr. Buckley has kept away from the slanderous territory of many unauthorized bios, and he cites wide-ranging sources for his claims. The book also includes nice references and extensive notes about Elton's music, interviews, and television appearances.This text is about Elton John and his music, and if you are looking for more personal and "juicy" insight into Elton's private life you might need to look elsewhere. However, as a source of many things Elton it is an invaluable resource.Recommend.
This book is a great that highlights the ups and downs of Elton's career. He is a true living legend who has stood the test of time. His recent releases are among his best with "The Diving Board" harking back to his beginning days. This book paints the picture of Elton in a realistic manner, warts and all.
Very well written and intriguing. I really enjoyed hearing hearing from Gary Osbourne and I can't help but wonder what a collaboration with him again would sound like as I really enjoyed some of the music they produced together. The book make me respect Elton even more.
I recently became mildly obsessed with Elton after my husband and I (finally) saw him in concert this summer! I wanted to find a book that was perfect for the average reader, with a busy life. I found this to very be very informative and it had a nice pace. This was easy to read,and easy to follow. I just wish there were more photos! I'm not a "professional" Elton John fan to know if the facts/stories in the biography are true or not, but I found it quite fun to read!
