Review
"Pithy, loaded letters and emails aimed at their vulnerable targets fly more like missiles than missives in Amanda Sthers' lively epistolary novel . . . Sthers’ book has the timing, wit, and warmth of a screwball screenplay that isn’t allowed to idle for more than a beat . . . Sthers captures her characters’ distinct voices and dueling positions with practiced concision and obvious relish." - NPR.org“This is a book you can read in an afternoon, but it'll stick with you for much longer than that. Comic, moving, and occasionally profound, Sthers' novel is a delight.†―Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Each letter in Holy Lands is a soliloquy about pain, separation, and belonging." - Washington Independent Review of Books“This moving novel manages a delicate balance between humor and tenderness among a family incapable of interacting without rancor.†―Publishers Weekly“[A] quick-footed, perfectly choreographed, piercingly funny, and poignant novel . . . As each articulate, conflicted, and ardent character endures life-altering experiences, Sthers incisively and provocatively questions crucial matters of religion, morality, inheritance, compassion, and love.†―Booklist“Sthers is an expert at crafting dysfunctional families that remain touching and relatable. With Holy Lands, she's penned an irreverent and endearing reminder that blood is thicker than water.†―Karen Tanabe, author of The Gilded Years“With eloquent Jewish humor, ironic taunts, familial reprimands, and cries from the heart each of the letters that form this gripping novel reveals a new secret, or asks a new question . . . Along the way we see that change is possible and that truth can be a brilliant vehicle of reconciliation. This book reminds us how intense, even pungent, all our letters, postal or electronic, should be.†―Grace Dane Mazur, author of The Garden Party

I love this book!!!! It’s like Jane Austen meets 84 Charing Cross RD. Meets Israel.I fell in love with the book from page one. Read it in one sitting! Could NOT put it down. Perfect size. Highly quality paper. And easy to read font. The story itself is ...perfection. It’s simply beautiful.
This is counterintuitively very enjoyable while tackling a deadly subject. I didn’t expect the style of using letters to drag, but it really didn’t. The treatment of the Israeli Palestinian conflict is one of the best I have read
The dialogue around raising pigs in Israel is quite humorous. The interplay between all of the characters reveals some of life’s most difficult feelings to express.
Story moves fast, however a lot of character development left implicit. Interesting read but wish it delved more into the intricacies of the holy Land
I started laughing and slowly one page after another I started crying.... The type of tears that make you want to call all your friends and your entire family to tell them: YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!
I'm not sure what readers French author Amanda Sthers was writing for in her novel, "Holy Lands". The book, which is being made into a movie, is a curious mixture of classic family dysfunction mixed with pork, used here as a seasoning. "Holy Lands" is set in both Nazereth, Israel (which is one of the few places in Israel where pigs can be raised), New York City, and. variously, Marrakesh and Paris. The characters flit between the cities with very little intention of acting as a family. Everyone's mad or disappointed with most everyone else and they find it easier to communicate by mail - either snail mail or, in some cases, email. There aren't very many epistolary novels being written lately. The best I can think of is British author Nigel Williams' sly and glorious novel, "Unfaithfully Yours", whose letters between characters are laugh-out-loud funny. Williams was able to concoct a fairly plausible plot point for why the letters were being written; Amanda Sthers' reasons for the letters is that Dr Harry Rosenmerck has moved to Israel to raise pigs and doesn't want a phone or a computer with email connection. And this inability to communicate in modern terms is devastating for the Rosenmerck family, which consists of divorced parents and two adult children. The children are almost caricatures of today's dysfunctional family members. David is gay and brilliant, but has problems communicating with his father who has practically disowned him. And Annabelle is the 30 year old "child", who goes through life, unable - or unwilling - to settle down and begin to embrace adulthood. These are characters seen in almost every book about dysfunctional families. The parents are divorced, which is, of course, the reason for their children's problems. (But being the child of a father-who-has-a-pig-farm-in-Israel can't be too helpful to family dynamics...)Okay, so Amanda Sthers book - which is quite short - is another book about a dysfunctional family with a failure to communicate. The plot has been a staple of literature since, like, forever, and has been done better before now. I can sort of recommend the book if you have some free time to begin to get involved with the Rosenmercks. Though, I'd really advise your picking up "Unfaithfully Yours" if you want to read an epistolary novel about dysfunctional people.
“Does keeping the memory fresh prevent history from repeating itself? Surely not. Memories are meant to be forgotten. History is meant to be repeated. That of Jews, of women, of Arabs, of people who suffer, of Little Red Riding Hood. And the grandmother always, always has sharp teeth.â€Seldom do I make a decision to read a galley based almost entirely on the book’s cover, but really. A dancing pig in the Holy Land? How can that story not be interesting? Big thanks go to Net Galley and Bloomsbury. The whole book is a series of letters and emails sent between five characters. We have four family members: Harry and Monique are divorced, yet it’s one of those complicated divorces where there’s no clean break; David and Annabelle are their adult children. Harry is an American expatriate who has moved to Israel, but instead of embracing his culture and homeland in a more conventional way, he has opted to become a pig farmer in Nazareth, one of the few places in this Jewish nation where the animals are not straight up illegal. And so the fifth character is the rabbi, who entreats Harry to give up the pork business. He’s upsetting people, and he should respect his roots a little more. Jews have been through enough, nu? And before we know it, there’s mention of the Holocaust.Harry wants to keep his pigs, and he thinks it is time for Jews to lighten up about the Holocaust, maybe tell a joke about it now and then. The rabbi is floored. Joke? About the Holocaust? And so it’s on.You would think that with such edgy subject matter the story would veer over the boundary of good taste, but Sthers—who has many bestsellers to her credit, though this is her American debut—is deft, insightful and very, very funny. The prose is angry, hilarious, and aching all in turns, not unlike our feelings for our kin.Families are such fertile territory, and this one is among the best fictional families in literature. David, Harry and Monique’s son, is a gay playwright whose father has not come to grips with David’s sexuality. David writes him endless letters; Harry won’t respond. We see how Harry thinks and feels about David through his correspondence with the rabbi, and with the things Annabelle learns when she comes for a visit. Meanwhile, David’s new play is about to open, and it’s titled “Kosher Pig.†It’s about his father. Oh, how he wants Harry to be there for the opening! But Harry remains incommunicado. This is a slender little book, just 176 pages, and so I expected a casual romp, but it’s more than that. It’s a quick read, not because it’s lightweight literature but because it’s impossible to put down. I recommend you should get it and read it, and then…maybe you should call your parents. Better yet, go visit them.

These books are great and the complete set for around $40 is absolutely worth it. These are good books and my kid loves them.As other reviewers have noted, these British versions of the books use a small, not very kid-friendly font that really does detract from the experience... I have a few of the original ones that were mine when I was a kid and they are, I hate to say, much better, purely due to the better readability of the font and formatting.
These 47 books are a delight for both the reader and the listener. Along with the subtle messages in these books you'll find delightful and colorful pictures and well-written stories. My daughters (in their 30's) still have many of these books they owned as children and now I'm buying a fresh, complete set for my first grandson. My daughters still talk about how much fun it was to use silly voices and animation while reading them. They loved how I yelled the lines of Mr. Noisy, and whispered through most of Mr. Quiet. The "Little Miss" books are equally good. I bought that set as well and will give it at some point in the future.I'm located in Idaho and was slightly concerned about ordering from the UK but decided to trust Amazon. The transaction seems to have gone perfectly. I ordered from Bangzo and wotnix and they arrived the same day. Mine arrived in 11 days. The books measure 5"x 5½". Here's the complete list of titles included -· Mr Tickle· Mr Silly· Mr Uppity· Mr Cool· Mr Good· Mr Rude· Mr Small· Mr Daydream· Mr Forgetful· Mr Nonsense· Mr Clumsy· Mr Noisy· Mr Perfect· Mr Lazy· Mr Jelly· Mr Messy· Mr Clever· Mr Brave· Mr Rush· Mr Busy· Mr Impossible· Mr Tall· Mr Nosey· Mr Quiet· Mr Strong· Mr Dizzy· Mr Topsy-Turvy· Mr Cheerful· Mr Grumpy· Mr Bump· Mr Mean· Mr Greedy· Mr Bounce· Mr Funny· Mr Fussy· Mr Chatterbox· Mr Slow· Mr Mischief· Mr Grumble· Mr Wrong· Mr Sneeze· Mr Happy· Mr Snow· Mr Muddle· Mr Worry· Mr Skinny
I was on the fence whether I should get this or not, as my boys are 10 & 8, and thought they may be too old. However, I remembered loving these books so much as a kid that I've decided to take the chance. Both of them LOVE them! They read all of them several times, laugh out loud, discuss the characters, make up their own characters. These are timeless lovely books.
This is a super cute set. For American readers used to the American versions, there are a few things to note. First is that instead of Mr. Nervous, you get the British version "Mr. Jelly", and instead of Mr. Stingy, you get the British version "Mr. Mean". Also, instead of using a nice bold sans serif typeface for the text (I think they use Helvetica in the American versions), they use a much lighter typeface that looks like Optima. It is still fully legible, but it's a shame because Helvetica works so much better for a children's book, both in that it is simpler to read and it matches the aesthetic of the illustrations while Optima looks out of place. Lastly, on the front and back covers and on the box, they write "Mr." as Americans would. However, in the text of the book, they omit the period: Mr Happy, Mr Grumpy, etc. Not a huge deal, but for little American kids learning to read and spell, it would be nice to A) be consistent and B) learn "correctly". Those are the differences I noticed at a first glance. Also, these books are most definitely paperback. This set is currently listed as hardcover.
I had 5 or 6 of these books as a kid and they were rediscovered in Grammy's closet one day...my kids LOVED them and so I hunted down this complete box set as a Christmas gift for my 4 year old. Months later, we're still reading 3 or 4 of these books every night! The guide on the side of the box makes it easy to find the books by character and number as well. This box contains the UK version of the Mr Men books so some phrases and concepts may need to be clarified for younger US kiddos (Why did he eat a biscuit for tea? Isn't tea a drink?) and Mr. Nervous is known as Mr. Jelly...which the kids thought was really funny. I prefer the UK versions, to be honest, and you probably will as well! The box is a great deal...at about $1 a book these are just as cheap as they were at my local book store in 1981.
Great collection, but shortly after their arrival I received a suggestion from Amazon to buy two other Mr. Men titles that weren't in the "Complete Collection." So... not TOTALLY complete, but still a great set!
This beloved classic is British, but I grew up reading them even though I’m American. I am a school teacher and brought them into my classroom. My students adore them. If I could read them for story time all day I would. The students love it when I read them and they love reading them. Many of them are AR. The vibrant yet simple illustrations intrigue the students and there is always a moral to a story. We also learn new words like Topsy Turvy. There are some British terms so I explain them to my American students and they love them. They try to use them in their conversations.
Not really "Complete", Mr. Moustache, Mr. Adventure, and Mr. Marvelous are not included in this set. There are actually 50 books in the series.

"One of The Guardian’s Favourite Reads of 2017 as chosen by scientests""Winner of the 2018 PROSE Award in Psychology, Association of American Publishers""Winner of the 2018 British Psychological Society Book Award, Best Academic Monograph""Chris Chambers's portrait should sit high on the wall of heroes in the movement to reform science. A cognitive neuroscientist and psychologist, Chambers has had an important role as an editor and advocate in identifying, challenging and changing practices responsible for the reproducibility crisis. . . . This book is written for anyone curious about how science might repair itself. It should be required reading in university courses on research methods."---Barbara A. Spellman, Nature"Psychology: it's not dead yet. But Chris Chambers makes a stark case for its having engaged in sins that call its validity into question."---Luna C. M. Centifanti, Times Higher Education"In The 7 Deadly Sins of Psychology, Chambers demonstrates that many psychologists, driven by the imperative to publish in prestigious journals, produce studies with weak data, faulty methodologies, and questionable conclusions. Passionate, provocative, and persuasive, Chambers' book is filled with information and insights about current practices in psychology--and offers recommendations to enhance transparency and reproducibility."---Glenn Altschuler, Psychology Today"[A] sobering reading. . . . Seven Deadly Sins gives a candid and honest account of a profession that Chambers clearly cares deeply about, seeing the important contribution it can and should make to society. His ultimate message is that 'If we continue as we are then psychology will diminish as a reputable science and could very well disappear.'"---Clive Prince, Magonia Review"[Chambers] provides an excellent warts-and-all summary of the state of play in modern psychology, but also (and refreshingly) offers many practical solutions for the myriad and persistent problems that seem to be plaguing the field."---Dean Burnett, The Guardian"Chris Chambers’s superb and exceedingly timely new book . . . offers a 'one-stop shopping' resource for readers who wish to learn more about the recent challenges confronting psychology and our field’s recent efforts to address them. . . . An impressive achievement. It deserves to be read by all psychologists and students of psychology, as well as by all journalists who write about psychological topics."---Scott O. Lilienfeld and Thomas H. Costello, PsycCRITIQUES"I applaud Chambers for advocating reform of our science and this book for encouraging me to rethink our discipline. This book should be required reading for all graduate students and, of course, their mentors."---Dom Massaro, American Journal of Psychology

From the Back Cover
"The Seven Deadly Sins of Psychology is an unflinching self-examination of the state of psychology. At first Chambers's account might seem pessimistic, even fatalistic. But the rising narrative ultimately reveals his optimism about the disciplineÂ’s future via the collective action of its practitioners. Part historical account, part methodological review, The Seven Deadly Sins of Psychology will get psychologists thinking, talking, and maybe even acting to overcome the status quo and align the cultural incentives with scientific values."--Brian Nosek, Center for Open Science"This book could change how science is done. The issues Chambers raises are starting to be taken very seriously, especially by major funders in the United States and beyond, because of concerns that current practices are wasting resources by fostering irreproducible research. This is the only book I know of that is addressing these issues head-on."--Dorothy Bishop, University of Oxford"Written by an influential young leader in the science-reform movement, The Seven Deadly Sins of Psychology takes on a very important topic of great interest to a lot of people in behavioral science and beyond."--Hal Pashler, University of California, San Diego

A very technical book largely intended for those with advanced degrees in psychology, a background in statistics, and an immersion in the nasty and back-stabbing politics of academia. Fortunately, that's me. The chapters on each of seven "sins" are hugely enlightening but somewhat redundant; the final chapter in which the author goes on endlessly about his own proposed solutions is tedious, repetitious, and just plain self-promoting. But for those of us who have suffered the slings of academic research and always suspected that the system was rigged and broken, the fist seven chapters are well worth the read!
This book makes many very important points, but few that have not been made elsewhere. Good to have them collected together. But the book is rather repetitive.
Adam Smith, in his book The Theory of Moral Sentiments, wrote that "[…] self-deceit, this fatal weakness of mankind, is the source of half the disorders of human life". He could have been writing about modern psychology, a discipline so overwhelmed by self-deceit that, not without irony, has fallen prey to the exact same follies of human nature that it has helped discover. The discipline was so unaware of its own insights that it failed to include them into their epistemology - producing bundles of nonsensical trite, newspaper-hungry scientific malpractice. Chambers writes early on that "If we continue as we are then psychology will diminish as a reputable science and could very well disappear" (p. ix). This is no hyperbole.Decades of bad professional incentives, mischievous research practices (including outright fraud), a culture of statistical ignorance, plus the ability to keep experimental data hidden from scrutiny, have snowballed into a large-scale crisis, regardless of the many reputable incumbents who deny it. Recent events like the publication of a paper pertaining to prove the existence of precognition in a reputable psychological journal, the discovery of Stapel's data fabrication, or the bleak results from the reproducibility project are but a small part of a larger monster Chambers tries to show to the reader.Chambers has done a commendable and courageous job summarizing the many layers of this crisis, producing the most solid, pedagogical, and intellectually honest distillation I've seen so far. He pulls no punches: proper names are used when needed, and towering figures of the discipline don't come out unscathed. Chambers manages to explain many complex statistical subjects with pristine clarity; anyone interested in the subject, especially those without a background in statistics, can pick up the book and understand the technical nuances of this crisis. He explains the sources of unreliability of psychological research: from p-hacking to small-sample low-powered studies; the misleading obsession with journals prioritizing "breathtaking†findings; the equivocations of placing too much faith in conceptual but not statistical replications; the look-the-other-way culture of data secrecy; the acceptably vague description of methods; the downright fraudulent work or the obsession with the wrong metrics for scientific contribution. He writes: "Instead of valuing the reproducibility of results, psychology has embraced a tabloid culture where novelty and interest-value are paramount and the truth is left begging" (pp. 47-48).As an outsider, the only downside I find in this book is the lack of discussion of the role of theory in the crisis. My biggest surprise in reading the book was to find that psychology appears to be a discipline completely undisciplined by theory; how else can they come up with so many silly research questions? Theory and evidence are like systole and diastole - two inextricable parts of any attempt to build knowledge. Nevertheless, none of Chambers' 7 Deadly Sins lays much fault in psychological theory itself. For instance, when I read on p. 66 the hypothesis that lonelier people take longer showers because they compensate the lack of warmth in their lives with warm water (Bargh & Shalev, 2012), my reaction was not to ask myself if such a research question merits replication, or methodological scrutiny, but just: who cares? What is the great insight expected from testing that hypothesis in that way? Why are so many trivial questions being asked in the first place? I still don't have a satisfactory answer to these questions, perhaps because I'm not a psychologist myself. But there seems to be something deeply wrong in a discipline that has such a feeble relationship between its theories and the evidence it purportedly devices to support them.Aside from this minor quibble, the book is a great snapshot of a disquieting and important problem. I came out from reading the book with a much better understanding of what's unfolding. As the crisis in psychology is mostly sociological, beware of biased reviews attacking the book or his author - especially if they come from the psychological establishment. (I venture a prediction: reviews will be bimodal, with lots of highs, lots of lows and not much in between). Hopefully, this won't stop the book's message spreading like a wildfire through the discipline, helping bring an end to this longstanding self-deceit.Overall, a fantastic read.
This is a comprehensive and readable account of the current crisis in psychology, explaining in easily understood terms the underlying causes of sloppy science. Chambers has an engaging, conversational tone, and he describes his own career and the way that these concerns relate to his advocacy. The stories illustrating each point should help folks who aren't in the field appreciate the pressures and human failings that make science less reliable. The problems with the current incentive and system in research are easily the most important thing going on in psychology right now, and are increasingly being discovered in other sciences (e.g. cancer biology). Getting a handle on when and why science fails--and how we can improve it--should be at the top of every policy maker and psychologist's priority list. This book is a comprehensive guide to the problems and solutions.
I did psychological research and I assisted others with their analyses - statistical and reasoning. Often I was aghast at the twists and turns taken, not to explore, but to find "significance." I applaud Dr. Chambers for taking a stand and for putting together a path to restore integrity to a valuable science that in practical application can be so beneficial.
As a psychometrician and opponent of the "publish or perish" mindset, I can't recommend this book highly enough! It's a very thorough, accessible, and entertaining description of the 7 deadly sins apparent in the world of psychological research. Psychologists and cognitive neuroscientists with shaky statistical knowledge and tiny datasets; journals that refuse to publish solid replication studies or well-supported non-significant findings; ambitious researchers who chase the publication "star" mindset so frantically that they lose their ethical moorings and fake their data - it's all here, all footnoted, and revealed in an organized and eminently readable way. I came away with new information and a changed attitude toward journals like PLOS ONE and online data repositories. I'd have loved this book even if Chris Chambers had not dismantled the ridiculous formula for journal "impact factor," which he does, humbly revealing his own past misconceptions about it along the way. This book should be required reading for EVERY psychology grad student, and most of their mentors as well.
Outstanding discussion of some of the methodological problems in psychological science. But, importantly, offers a number of valuable solutions that could enable psychology to lead the way in methodological reform. I would strongly recommend this book to all consumers of research in behavioral science, but, most importantly, to students and researchers. Game-changing.
