I love this book and the strong main character, Cat Carlisle. Even if you don’t normally read historical fiction, author Terry Lynn Thomas will make you a believer. She immerses her readers in the WWII time period without a barrage of “reminders†nailed into the prose. Instead, she eases those period references into the plot with a deft hand, enhancing the tale she’s weaving. As with Ms. Thomas’s other novels, this one settles you right into life with her characters, living alongside them rather than watching from a safe distance. It is this that keeps me reading her books, and she just keeps getting better and better. I strongly recommend The Silent Woman—and all of Ms. Thomas’s books—to any reader. You'll thank me later!

I'm interested in historical fiction set in this time frame but bought this book by mistake. Having invested $0.99, I opened the novel and was struck immediately by the great opening sentence. By the time I finished the preliminary chapter, I knew I was in the hands of a fine writer. The story itself is well told and suspenseful, but a bit Agatha Christie for my taste (that may be a good thing). Excellent novel!
I finally put aside a weekend to tear into Terry Lynn Thomas' new one - so much fun to read! I page turned way past bedtime and was not disappointed. This isn't my usual genre so I was pleasantly surprised that I cared what happened to Catherine.
I am hooked on historical fiction, especially women in World War II. This book includes all the intrigue of espionage, secrets, German paperwork – and of course, murder. It was just what I was looking for!

About the Author
Internationally renowned power skating coach Laura Stamm has been coaching hockey players for more than 38 years. She is recognized as the pioneer of modern power skating in North America. The first woman ever to coach a major league professional hockey player, Stamm showed the hockey world how important skating technique is to a hockey player's success. Stamm has taught at hockey schools throughout the United States and Canada. She has worked with college and youth hockey players, U.S. Olympic team members, and professional players, including many NHL stars. Several of her former students went on to become NHL coaches and general managers. Laura has also taught thousands of minor league pro and amateur players how to increase their speed, agility, and efficiency on the ice. Stamm has worked with the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, and the New Jersey Devils, and the Atlanta (now Calgary) Flames. Her Power Skating System has been employed by prestigious hockey teams around the world. Stamm has conducted power skating clinics throughout the United States and Canada since 1973. She has personally trained and certified her own team of instructors who teach her Power Skating System worldwide. In addition to authoring three books and numerous articles on hockey skating, Stamm has been a frequent speaker at coaches' symposiums, camps, and conventions around the world. In 2006 she was the featured presenter at the USA Hockey Level 5 Coaching Certification Symposium. In January 2007, Laura was featured in USA Hockey Magazine as one of the top women working in hockey. In 2009, Laura was nominated for induction into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. A champion athlete in ice dancing and tennis, Stamm majored in physiology at Cornell University and taught high school biology and physics. In 1971 she became a power skating coach at a summer hockey school directed by then-NHL stars Rod Gilbert and Brad Park. She went on to coach rookie New York Islander star Bob Nystrom. Her enormous success with him led to coaching assignments with other teams in the NHL and WHA (World Hockey Association), thus beginning her long career in hockey. Stamm lives in Anchorage, Alaska.

DVD is dated in terms of production, but content and demonstrations are first rate. Be warned, however: what's on the DVD and in the book isn't new, nor is it a secret to excellent skating: pretty much every hockey clinic and camp you go to teaches these same power skating techniques.
I was somewhat disappointed in this latest edition of Stamm's classic how-to for hockey skating. Although some of the photos were newer, they weren't necessarily better. Same goes for the graphics. Although some beginners will find this useful, they might be better served by other books and videos that cover more basics and have better illustrations and diagrams.
Nothing like an in person 1on1 coach.

About the Author
Frank McCourt (1930–2009) was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Irish immigrant parents, grew up in Limerick, Ireland, and returned to America in 1949. For thirty years he taught in New York City high schools. His first book, Angela's Ashes, won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the L.A. Times Book Award. In 2006, he won the prestigious Ellis Island Family Heritage Award for Exemplary Service in the Field of the Arts and the United Federation of Teachers John Dewey Award for Excellence in Education.

I had purchased Frank McCourt's book Angela's Ashes and really enjoyed the book. He was such a good writer and lived an interesting and sad life. After reading Angela's Ashes I wanted to read more of his work about his life so I purchased Tis, which is a book about his life. This is another extraordinary book by Frank McCourt. He writes so honestly and his love, sadness and triumph comes through. I recommend Tis and other Frank McCourt books. I've never seen the movie based on his books, and they are very vivid and some times heartbreaking and honest.
An excellent reminder of the hardships encountered by our parents and grandparents who came to America in search of a better life.
After the grueling Angela's Ashes the McCourt (and most imigrant Irish) saga continues. So many of these folks just never found the right warm and fuzzy place to settle into that the movies always told us about did they? Maybe this ought to be required reading for those of us who have forgotten how difficult it was and still is to be an immigrant. I'm grateful that my ancestors were so poor that they quickly moved on towards the midwest to make a life, away from the temptation to hop another ship back to the old country. Unfortunately the lessons of those terribly difficult assimilation years haven't stuck with very many of us so as to imbue us with more compassion for today's newcomers. I'm glad the McCourts stuck it out long enough to provide a good lesson.
I got this CD set to listen to at work. I had already listened to "Angela's Ashes". Now, I am listening to "Teacher Man". Frank McCourt is hands down my favorite writer. He is such an inspiration. He is one person I really would like to have met. If you wanted to just reach back in time, find little Frank and give him a hug during "Angela's Ashes", you might not feel exactly the same about adult Frank. He is no longer directly in the grip of his mother's poverty once in America. His mentality is still in the slums of Limerick, though not because he really wants it to be. It really is just all he knows and what was engrained in him. Throughout this book, you see his charm and intelligence shining through. But, his self doubt seems to always have a hold of him, dragging him back down. His ignorance of so many things most Americans take for granted and his severe humbleness make him endearing all the same. I would recommend "Tis" to anyone. If you had a tough time while growing up, you will be able to relate. I suppose, if you had a perfect childhood, you can get a glimpse of how the rest of us felt. :)
This was such a wonderful honest book. I felt like I was listening to an old man I just met at a coffee shop. He tells you the story of his life in such a wonderful way. I cannot imagine the things that he grew up with. I find his honest revelry regarding his own struggles with alcohol heartbreaking. He did what he knew. He spoke of alcohol being the curse of the Irish, that his father ruined his childhood because of drinking and yet he himself couldn't control it. One thing that stuck out was his struggles with religion. It saddened me when he said that he didnt know how to have a conversation, direct prayer with The Lord. Through his struggle he became something, and I think that's what everyone needs to know!

As you read it, you "are there" in New York, in Ireland, -at Mam's almost reunion with Frank's father, - in the army with Frank in Europe, - in church, - in the boarding house which provided meager temporary shelter, - in the countless dull mind-numbing jobs he had before becoming a teacher, - in the classroom trying to inspire lethargic students. With wit, and a lot of mischievious charm, author Mc Court escorts us through his romantic liasons, marriage and birth of his daughter, - his brothers arrival and existence in New York,- his own "coming of age in America" as he matures, - and the death of his beloved mother, Angela, (Mam).'Tis a grand saga. 'Tis a grand book. -- 'Tis. Now let's see the movie. John Wayne, Barry Fitzgerald, Victor Mc Glagen (The Quiet Man") would have been ideal, but they are gone. That leaves Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) or Robin Williams ( Dead Poets Society). How about it Mr Mc Court.? Write the screenplay for the movie based on your memoir triology, or at least give us another outstanding book!!!
This is a funny, but somber, well written account of an Irish immigrant (the author) and his family "troubles". He also wrote "Angela's Ashes" and has won many awards. It is a window into a certain time in the history of immigrants from one country and the changes and obstacles they faced, and the country they left behind but stayed in torch with.
I really enjoyed "Angela's Ashes," and like this book even more. You basically could combine the two into one big book, as one is just a continuation of the other. Both are written in McCourt's unique style and both are a pleasure to read. I think "Tis" gets the extra star from me because, whereas "Angela's Ashes" really kept you feeling bad for the boy throughout, "Tis" is a story of hope and promise. Much happens to Frankie McCourt once he gets to the U.S. and the life he leads here keep you both interested and wondering just how he would be able to turn his fortunes for the better.This, as was "Angela's Ashes," is a very honest book. In no way does McCourt attempt to cover up his flaws or missteps. In no way does he try to paint himself a hero. You get the real deal here, and many times I found myself closely relating to what he was thinking at any given moment.I highly recommend this book.

Great tables, photographs, and information about problems most frequently seen and misdiagnosed as disease in the hobby and business of gardening. Though written from California, applicable to trees and shrubs on the opposite coast of VA. Combined in one volume is information on pH, planting, nutrient and other environmental problems which -when recognized- should reduce unnecessary application of pesticides and result in healthier plantings. This is the only reference of its type that I've found in nine years professionally advising homeowners, master gardeners, and other professionals.
As a second year horticulture student, required texts can often be difficult to read if one does not have a basic understanding of the subject matter. I found that these books read like instruction manuals, and didn't keep my attention well. Abiotic Disorders of Landscape Plants is well written and has pertinent information, easily to be entreated. Having no previous knowledge of the subject did little to hinder any understanding I am gaining from reading this book.

This Book is a very good source for helping teach what everyday life was like for both the Patriots and Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. Although I am not an expert on the Revolutionary War I do know quite a bit about the time period and am a stickler for historical accuracy.I am also a stickler when it comes to revitionist history or creating a historical bias due to omitting facts so I am very careful about the sources I use when teaching history to my second graders. While I think the book did a good job of presenting the perspectives of both Patriots and Loyalists the book did go a little heavy on the abuse suffered by Loyalists from Patriots. Both sides suffered abuse from the other but the book fails to mention that Patriots also sufferd the same abuse by Loyalists. Example: both Loyalist and Patriots had homes and property seized and burned- not just Loyalists as the book implies.The book also made a huge historical error in stating that George Washington's older brother Lawrence remained a staunch Loyalist during the Revolution resulting in family division. This is simply not true. Lawrence had been dead many years before the beginning of the Revolution having died while George was still a teen-ager. It was from Lawrence that George inherited Mount Vernon. George did have other brothers but all of them served on the Patriots side. It may be that the author confused Lawrence with George's in-laws some of whom remained Loyalists, but when writing a historical book, especially one whose purpose is to educate children, correct factual detail is a must.This was a big mistake to make and one that could easily have been avoided just by double-checking facts. If this book is ever reprinted I hope this mistake will be corrected.Despite the error I found, this book had a lot of good information and was a valuable resource in teaching my second grade students about the Revolutionary War. I just made sure I expanded or explained where needed.
I bought this for my 10-year old son, and while the introductory information is age-appropriate, it reads like a book for a much younger child. The book is also quite brief. What's here is fine, but I wish it were more comprehensive.
The If You Lived series is great, especially for homeschoolers. Very educational, great illustrations.
I have many books from the "If you Lived During..." for my students and it seems no matter what grade I teach, they are always very popular books with my kids. They're informative in a kid-friendly way with realistic illustrations. These are great books for unit studies as well. Teacher recommends!
