Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how Tolkien's personal faith influenced his writing. The writer makes a compelling and, in the end, convincing argument that LOTR is a fundamentally Christian/Catholic work about a loving God working to save humanity in a pre-Christian world. The author makes good use both of hints in the text of LOTR and The Hobbit themselves as well as of Tolkien's letters to make her points. The book is also generally well-written and shows a reasonably good understanding of Tolkien's world.Other reviewers have pointed out, however, some of the "factual" inaccuracies in this book. I, too, found them distracting and felt that they detracted from the weight of the author's arguments, but not to a serious, much less fatal, degree.There were some things that the author did that actually did take away significantly from my enjoyment of the book and from my appreciation for the underlying arguments. First, the author reuses the same biblical quotes on several occasions when a simple reference to the earlier quote would suffice. Attentive readers don't need to get hit in the head with the same text over and over. Second, the author makes repeated negative references to post 9/11 United States foreign policy. Analysis of these issues is not only beyond the author's apparent expertise, but also beyond the scope of the book and would be better left for her own sermons or for cocktail party discussion rather than as part of her literary/religious discussion. Third, there is a fair amount of repetition, particularly in the author's explanation of certain themes in Tolkien and in the Bible. She should explain these well, once, and then simply refer back to her earlier discussion.Having mentioned these criticisms, there are some small but important things that the author does well (other than the previously-praised elucidation of her primary argument). One of the most important is that she does not treat Tolkien and his work as being unimpeachable monuments of English Literature. I smiled appreciatively when she mentioned Tolkien's verse is not his best writing and when she hinted that some of his descriptions of plant life might have run on a bit longer than many readers might have wished. She also does not suffer from the conceit of many literary critics that they know and understand exactly why the author did everything the author did and that they have a theory that explains perfectly every word of the work under discussion. For example, she admits that Tom Bombadil is something of a mystery and that he may not fit very well into her theory of the work as a whole.So, overall, I do recommend this book. Anyone who has spent a lot of time with LOTR will learn something interesting and enlightening about this work and will gain greater insight into what Tolkien was trying to teach us. That, in itself, justifies the price of its purchase and the time spent reading it.
Fleming Rutledge is arguably the ideal critic of The Lord of the Rings. An ardent student of English literature, an orthodox (Episcopal/Anglican) priest, and a gifted writer, she brings to bear impressive resources in analyzing an often- or over-analyzed work. In doing so, she builds an impressive case in support of a seldom-heard conclusion: Tolkien's masterpiece is a masterpiece not only of storytelling, but also of theology and, perhaps, evangelism.In making this case, Rutledge relies not only on her careful reading of the text (including its prequel, The Hobbit), but also on Tolkien's letters (as indicated by extensive and informative footnoting). In particular, she challenges commonly held ideas about the epic, including but not limited to the following: (1) it is a tale of pure good versus absolute evil; (2) it occurs in another world; and (3) it lacks a divine presence. Other repeated topics include rational inferences as to how Tolkien would feel about modern cultures and wars and Rutledge's juxtaposition of the text and Peter Jackson's film trilogy.Rutledge's writing is clear and often striking. That said, the book is slightly more repetitive (and thus longer) than it needs to be, and on occasion, it feels like Rutledge is reaching for an appropriate Biblical verse or analogy. Nevertheless, this is a serious, thorough, and important study of the epic--structured not thematically but parallel to the narrative--that future students and critics cannot afford to ignore. And as for Christians who enjoy fantasy literature, this is essentially a collection of essays and sermons focusing on one of fantasy's great works. (For this latter group, this would be an ideal birthday or Christmas gift.) Highly recommended for either group. 4-1/2 gleaming elven jewels.
Not only is this the single best work on Tolkien that I have ever read. This is also a supremely well written book. Rutledge captures the imagination with a firm grounding in both LOR and Scripture.
Readable, scholarly, and plainly written by a true Tolkien fan. I used this over and over as a resource when teaching a Sunday school class on the underlying themes in LOTR.
This is an excellent book for those interested in understanding Tolkien's assertion that his work was fundamentally Catholic; I am not a biblical scholar, so I was very interested in the parallels the author was able to draw between biblical themes and imagery and those in LOTR.However, the effect of the book for me was marred by factual errors in referencing LOTR. [Ex.: she quotes the fact of Merry's sword being the work of Westernesse, then proceeds to talk about it as if it were made by elves in Gondolin!] There are similar errors throughout -- not a whole lot, but enough to mar the impact of the whole.Additionally, Rutledge cannot resist doing what she quotes Tolkien as specifically decrying: making direct analogies between a current political situation and the LOTR narrative -- in a one-sided fashion. Again, she did not do this often (and admittedly kept those comments to the footnotes most of the time), but the one-sidedness of the judgement detracted from the impact of her overall thesis.Worth reading for those interested in seeing the biblical roots of Tolkien's philosophy.

This week, I got the wonderful opportunity to read "Smart Money Smart Kids: Raising the Next Generation to Win with Money" by Dave Ramsey and his daughter Rachel Cruze. I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed this book! I have been familiar with Dave Ramsey's methods and books for quite a few years and my husband and I try to manage our money according to Dave's methods and principles.What makes this book different from the rest? While Dave's other books generally focus mainly on adults and debt, "Smart Money Smart Kids" focuses entirely on children of all ages and how to teach them to smartly manage money. It highlights different age ranges and how to handle chores and "commission" (Dave's word for allowance) for each age. They also talk about how to help teens save for cars, college, and any other major expense that they may have.I finished this book in a matter of only 24 hours because it was just that good! Before I had even finished the book, my husband and I began implementing Dave and Rachel's principles into how we handle money with our children. We quickly started our oldest on the envelope system giving her three envelopes with the titles "Spend", "Save" and "Give" and created a chart showing her how much money she will earn for each chore accomplished. She will receive her "commission" at the end of each week. For our youngest who is just 2 1/2, we created a much looser system since she is still so young and does not understand the value of money. When she helps with little chores like helping mommy carry the laundry and putting her toys away, she earns change for her piggy bank. Dave and Rachel recommend giving the little ones their money immediately since they don't understand the idea of waiting.I was surprised to see that most of this book was actually written by Rachel and not Dave. I did not know much about her before reading the book, but was excited to see that she works for her dad, speaking mostly to their younger audiences about money. She had some excellent ideas, and I will definitely be going back over her methods as my children grow older.I rate this book as 5 stars and would highly recommend it to anyone with children! In most books I have read it is try and put this much of your check in to savings, pay off the credit card that has the lowest balance and so forth. I got this for both of my daughters and my oldest, who is pretty good with money, thought it was boring because of the stories. She's more interested in ways to save for her future and that and not want to read other people's stories.

I like to use my kindle cloud reader to do some class reading while I am on break at work. Lack of compatibility with kindle cloud reader makes the book much less useful. I can't easily pull it up when I am using public computers away from my home computer. The size of the text makes it absolutely painful to read on my phone.Recently the text started changing colors in the kindle app whenever I try to read the text. This ebook version is very poorly executed.

Really enjoyable bit of urban fantasy noir.Refreshing urban fantasy that eschews the traditional Masquerade style tropes to put its supernatural elements to the foreground, in an almost indulgent manner. Characters have very soap-operaesque names like Rune Saint John, but it once you get past the floweriness of it, you see it works in favor of the narrative. These are not magical beings lurking in the shadows, carrying secrets upon secrets they can never reveal. These people are privileged and conspicuous, at times even ostentatious about their magical power and it helps paint a picture of a very different kind of world, almost a mystical Great Gatsby-like world that seems dangerously on the precipice of self-destructing from its own lack of restraint.The main character, Rune, provides a witty and sardonic counterpoint to his world's rarified existence, and he and his companions craft a quip-a-minute narrative that is very reminiscent of the works of Jim Butcher or Joss Whedon. There is also a very welcome amount of queer representation in the book, always written positively and matter-of-factly but with a great deal of honesty.The book's tarot imagery is also a lot of fun, although you don't need to be well versed in the cards to understand them. Furthermore, the worldbuilding and magic system is incredibly fresh and engaging, and it syncretizes a number of real world occult concepts together into something unique and distinct.The book does have a few problems that I'm willing to chalk up to being standard "first novel" issues; there is a lot of information presented all at once towards the beginning and the story (correctly) takes a "show, don't tell" approach, but it still can be a little disorienting and require you read carefully not to miss a detail for when it is expounded upon later on. There is some dialogue that is a hair too bantery, a few places where the prose is a smidge purple, but there are way more hits than misses. However, by the 90 page mark I was on track and eager for more, with minimal confusion and maintaining a good pace. I fully anticipate the next installments in the series will refine these issues and deliver a really solid, and most importantly, fresh and unique take on the urban fantasy genre that is also rich with lore and engaging, non-preachy queer positivity.
4.5 stars. I gave this book 4.5 stars because it could have used a last pass by the copy editor and I just have to take something off for that lack of attention to detail. Besides this book was so good that the author really should have given it that last bit off polish. Even so, I rarely give five stars and I usually take a full star off for proofing, but I just couldn’t punish this book because it was too excellent. The writing, while not as laugh-out-loud funny as Jim Butcher, was as clever as Jim Butcher. They world was original and imaginative, and well-realized. There wasn’t a lot of superfluous exposition, but I felt I understood how the world worked at all times. In the rare instances that it was a little unclear, it was also unclear to the characters just what was happening, so it was relevant. The plot was fast-paced yet left time for character development, backstory, and exploration of the different relationships between characters. And the characters themselves were engaging, sympathetic, funny, and well-differentiated. My only quibble about them is that I didn’t get a good sense of what most of them looked like. That’s not really important to the integrity of the story, and a lot of readers probably don’t mind, but I like physical descriptions to help me get a good mental picture of the person. Each character had a very different voice, however, so it was easy to differentiate them as one is reading. I liked how the plot turned out, and didn’t see the twists coming. The ending gave a resolution to immediate events but also raised some more questions to be explored in coming books (I really hope this turns into a long series), without leaving a cliffhanger. Lastly, this is a fantasy with a gay protagonist, like Mercedes Lackey’s Last Herald Mage trilogy, not a book about being gay or a gay fantasy romance. Don’t read this if you’re looking for an explicit romance, read it because it’s an awesome urban fantasy. You’ll be disappointed if you’re looking for sex scenes, but you’ll be excited by the story and characters themselves. Just read it. Then go put the next book on your list to be picked up the minute it’s available.

My infertility and reproductive immunology bible my goodness i learned soooo much from this one book. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking answers from repeat loss. After losing four of my own i used my knowledge sought the right help and now have two miracle babies.
Excellent read as an intro into the reproductive immunology world. Was very helpful to read prior to getting my test results and also to understand more of what my test results meant when I did receive them. I am not a success story but I do hope this provides some answers after 5 failed IVFs and 3 miscarriages. I hope this is the missing link!
I'll keep this brief: After 5 miscarriages and no issues found by a number of OB/gyns and RE's I found the Beer Center. Fast forward 2 years later and my healthy daughter was born. Immune issues may be rare, but for women who have them, getting them under control is the only way to get through a pregnancy and it is simply a crime that many OB's are not believers of these issues as I am sure there are many couples out there who have given up when they could have been treated. I hope when my daughter decides she would like to have a child these tests and treatments are mainstream so no one needs to go through recurrent pregnancy loss and secondary infertility.
Great book with tons of information for those with immunology issues trying to conceive and for those who may discover they have immunology issues. My RE even said he should get the book to give out to his IVF patients.
I bought this book in late 2008. Been miscarried twice before and my ob couldn't figure out why, he said everything is normal with me. This book really opened my eyes, i never have thought i have immune related problems, but it turns out that i have. I am familiar with most of the symptoms mentioned in this book. Because I live in Indonesia, i search high and low for a doctor who support Dr. Beer protocol. I got rejected by two or three obgyns before i finally found Prof. Ichramsjah Rahman who support similar ideas about the connection between immune system and miscarriages. Just like protocols in this book I go through monthly IVIG therapy etc. Hope this pregnancy come out successfully :)
Very interesting and informative information. Many doctors that I have gone to don’t believe in this stuff but it makes sense how immunology plays a role. Now I’m on the look for a more experienced and informed doctor that’s knows about recurring losses
WOW! Dr. Beer is way ahead of his time and I throughly enjoyed reading his book and understand more about the world of miscarriage and infertility! The only down fall of this book is the medical terminology that most may not understand. Some parts were over my head...but Dr. Beer's theories make complete sense in how the author explains them.
