Probably because, as with much literary writing, the writer wants to soothe the reader’s nerves by slipping the story roots into the subconscious.I don’t frequently read works that I regard as literary. Nor am I going to often read books of the period between the two world wars. I think this is because I’ve seen a lot of movies set then. At any rate, when I do sit down to read such a book, I want to feel as though I am an eye witness.“The Silent Woman†works because it is an absorbing thriller written in a literary style. Much as I enjoy books written by Michael Creighton, Stephen King and Elmore Leonard, one would never anticipate that either of them could have written this sensitive historical thriller.BLUSH FACTOR No worries here. I love this book and the strong main character, Cat Carlisle. Even if you don’t normally read historical fiction, author Terry Lynn Thomas will make you a believer. She immerses her readers in the WWII time period without a barrage of “reminders†nailed into the prose. Instead, she eases those period references into the plot with a deft hand, enhancing the tale she’s weaving. As with Ms. Thomas’s other novels, this one settles you right into life with her characters, living alongside them rather than watching from a safe distance. It is this that keeps me reading her books, and she just keeps getting better and better. I strongly recommend The Silent Woman—and all of Ms. Thomas’s books—to any reader. You'll thank me later!

Set against the gripping backdrop of a WWII espionage spy ring, Thomas weaves an intricate tale of both political and personal drama, peopling it with character's whose actions and motives will keep you constantly guessing. With a mood subtly reminiscent of du Maurier's Manderly, and a well-developed case of characters, The Silent Woman will keep you turning pages long into the night, and eagerly awaiting the next installment of Catherine Carlisle's story.

Set against the backdrop of WWII, this first book in the Catherine Carlisle series draws the reader in from the onset.Thomas skillfully unfolds this mysterious drama with a vivid cast of characters, captivating pace, while weaving a number of surprising twists until the final crescendo.I cannot wait to read the second book of this series!!!
I'm interested in historical fiction set in this time frame but bought this book by mistake. Having invested $0.99, I opened the novel and was struck immediately by the great opening sentence. By the time I finished the preliminary chapter, I knew I was in the hands of a fine writer. The story itself is well told and suspenseful, but a bit Agatha Christie for my taste (that may be a good thing). Excellent novel!
I finally put aside a weekend to tear into Terry Lynn Thomas' new one - so much fun to read! I page turned way past bedtime and was not disappointed. This isn't my usual genre so I was pleasantly surprised that I cared what happened to Catherine.
I am hooked on historical fiction, especially women in World War II. This book includes all the intrigue of espionage, secrets, German paperwork – and of course, murder. It was just what I was looking for!
Infrequently one reads a book that has all the elements of a good book. This book has mystery,suspense, history,& characters you love and others you hate..Each element was like a good recipe,just the right amount. It kept my attention to the point I couldn't stop reading. I want to read more from this author.

About the Author
Internationally renowned power skating coach Laura Stamm has been coaching hockey players for more than 38 years. She is recognized as the pioneer of modern power skating in North America. The first woman ever to coach a major league professional hockey player, Stamm showed the hockey world how important skating technique is to a hockey player's success. Stamm has taught at hockey schools throughout the United States and Canada. She has worked with college and youth hockey players, U.S. Olympic team members, and professional players, including many NHL stars. Several of her former students went on to become NHL coaches and general managers. Laura has also taught thousands of minor league pro and amateur players how to increase their speed, agility, and efficiency on the ice. Stamm has worked with the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, and the New Jersey Devils, and the Atlanta (now Calgary) Flames. Her Power Skating System has been employed by prestigious hockey teams around the world. Stamm has conducted power skating clinics throughout the United States and Canada since 1973. She has personally trained and certified her own team of instructors who teach her Power Skating System worldwide. In addition to authoring three books and numerous articles on hockey skating, Stamm has been a frequent speaker at coaches' symposiums, camps, and conventions around the world. In 2006 she was the featured presenter at the USA Hockey Level 5 Coaching Certification Symposium. In January 2007, Laura was featured in USA Hockey Magazine as one of the top women working in hockey. In 2009, Laura was nominated for induction into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. A champion athlete in ice dancing and tennis, Stamm majored in physiology at Cornell University and taught high school biology and physics. In 1971 she became a power skating coach at a summer hockey school directed by then-NHL stars Rod Gilbert and Brad Park. She went on to coach rookie New York Islander star Bob Nystrom. Her enormous success with him led to coaching assignments with other teams in the NHL and WHA (World Hockey Association), thus beginning her long career in hockey. Stamm lives in Anchorage, Alaska.

DVD is dated in terms of production, but content and demonstrations are first rate. Be warned, however: what's on the DVD and in the book isn't new, nor is it a secret to excellent skating: pretty much every hockey clinic and camp you go to teaches these same power skating techniques.
I was somewhat disappointed in this latest edition of Stamm's classic how-to for hockey skating. Although some of the photos were newer, they weren't necessarily better. Same goes for the graphics. Although some beginners will find this useful, they might be better served by other books and videos that cover more basics and have better illustrations and diagrams.
Nothing like an in person 1on1 coach.
